Brace for blaze as Kuwait temperatures to hit 51°C
KUWAIT CITY, May 25: The Meteorological Department expects the weather to be hot on Monday, with moderate to active northwesterly winds of up to 45 kilometers per hour; causing dust in open areas and residential areas are relatively affected by this dust. Director of the department Dirar Al- Ali revealed that the weather maps indicate the country is affected by India's seasonal depression, which is accompanied by a very hot air mass. He added that the maximum temperature monitored by the stations at the beginning of the summer season reached 51 degrees Celsius in some areas; while moderate to brisk northwesterly winds were detected at times, causing dust in some areas, especially the open areas. He disclosed it is also expected that the maximum temperature will reach between 45 and 48 degrees Celsius in most land areas, then the depression will gradually deepen and the maximum temperature will rise to reach between 48 and 51 degrees Celsius with light to moderate northwesterly winds from Tuesday until Thursday. Earlier on Sunday, temperatures dropped to 45 degrees Celsius; prompting the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy to refrain from implementing the scheduled power outages in all residential sectors. The load indicator remained in the green zone; recording 16,000 megawatts, in contrast to the consumption recorded in recent days, when the indicator touched the 17,000-megawatt barrier. Sources from the ministry pointed out that the drop in temperatures naturally leads to lower load rates, as it happened on Sunday. They said the ministry is forced to implement scheduled power outages to relieve the grid during peak hours as one of the solutions to the low productivity crisis it is currently facing, in addition to the consumption rationalization campaigns and importing from the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority whenever necessary.

Kuwait Announces Power Cuts in 51 Areas
With temperatures soaring close to 50 degrees Celsius and power demand hitting record highs, Kuwait has begun rolling out scheduled electricity cuts across 51 areas in an urgent bid to stabilize its energy grid, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy announced Wednesday. The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy announced the implementation of planned power cuts in 51 areas, including residential, industrial, and agricultural zones after the country's power consumption index surged into the red zone, reaching 16,393 megawatts on Wednesday morning. This represented a sharp increase from Tuesday's 16,030 megawatts, as thermometers across the country hovered around a blistering 50 degrees Celsius. The decision introduces what may become a regular feature of Kuwaiti summers, with soaring temperatures and aging infrastructure combining to create volatile energy demand. 'These outages are necessary to maintain the stability of the electrical system during periods of peak consumption,' the ministry said in a statement. The affected areas include three agricultural zones, Wafra, Rawdatain, and Abdally farms, and five industrial zones: Mina Abdullah, Subhan, Sulaibiya, Al Rai, and Shuwaikh. Additionally, power cuts will impact 43 residential areas, including Salam, Abu Futaira, Jleeb Al Shuyoukh, Jaber Al Ahmad, Rawda, Salmiya, Ras Al Ardh, Al Shaab Al Bahri, Maidan Hawally, Jaber Al Ali, Andalusia, West Abdullah Al Mubarak, Sulaibiya Industrial Area, part of Sulaibiya Residential Area, Faihaa, Firdous, Al Dhaher, Al Naseem, Al Daiya, Al Jazeera Al Khadraa, Abdullah Al Salem, Sabah Al Nasser, Shuhada, Abdullah Al Mubarak, Egaila, Fintas, the coastal strip from Abu Halifa Roundabout, Al Masayel, Saad Al Abdullah, Hittin, Ardiya, Funaitees, Al Qasr, Hadiya, Shuwaikh, Shamiya, Jaber Al Ali, Surra, Mahboula, Farwaniya, Al Raqga, part of Al Rai, and Northwest Sulaibikhat. Energy crunch sparks area-wide power cuts
KUWAIT CITY, May 22: 'Programmed power outages' have become the 'bitter medicine' for the electricity crisis amid the ongoing heat wave the country is experiencing. The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy resorted to the programmed power outage for the third consecutive day on Thursday, with an expanded scope -- 56 residential areas, five industrial areas and three agricultural areas. This is an increase of 12 areas compared to Wednesday, when the number of areas affected by power outages reached 51. In a related development, the electricity load indicator crossed into the red zone; recording 16,858 megawatts -- an increase of 505 megawatts, compared to 16,350 megawatts on Wednesday. In this context, sources from the ministry revealed that units currently under maintenance have a total production capacity of 2,700 megawatts. They affirmed that the ministry is working hard to complete the maintenance of these units soon to bring them back into service, which will contribute to the stability of the electricity grid and alleviate the current burdens resulting from the high temperatures approaching 50 degrees Celsius. Sources expect a decrease in loads during the weekend due to the closure of government buildings, especially schools, which consume large amounts of electricity. They stressed the need to continue implementing rationalization mechanisms, particularly during peak hours, as one of the main solutions to the crisis. They indicated that the ministry is keen on communicating with customers to inform them about the power outage schedule through the Sahel application, so they can take the necessary precautions at home in the event of a power outage. The ministry announced Thursday that it may be forced to cut off power in some parts of certain agricultural, industrial and residential areas due to the high power consumption; in addition to ongoing maintenance work on some electricity generation units, in preparation for operating them at full capacity to maintain the stability of the country's electrical system.

Kuwait Ramps Up Green Energy Drive with Smart Meters
KUWAIT CITY, May 12: Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy has successfully completed the installation of smart electricity meters in approximately 95% of schools and mosques across the country, according to informed sources within the ministry. The remaining installations are expected to be finalized soon. Sources explained that the smart meters enable the ministry to remotely control and cut off power supply to schools after class hours and to mosques following prayer times—an initiative aimed at curbing unnecessary electricity consumption. The move reflects the commitment of Minister Dr. Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem and senior officials to promoting energy efficiency, particularly during peak demand periods. In a separate development, Undersecretary Dr. Adel Al-Zamel took part in the opening session of the Kuwait Sustainable Energy Conference, held under the theme 'High-Level Dialogue on Regional Policies: Collaborative Pathways for Renewable Energy Solutions and Gateways for Hydrogen Trade.' The session highlighted Kuwait's national priorities in renewable energy development and hydrogen utilization. Attendees reviewed the recently signed agreement with China's State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) to advance the Shagaya and Abdaliya renewable energy projects, which aim to generate over 3,000 megawatts of electricity. Dr. Al-Zamel stated that Kuwait's renewable energy capacity is projected to reach 4,800 megawatts by 2029, leveraging various technologies. He emphasized that the region's transition to clean energy must support both economic growth and national interests. He identified green and blue hydrogen development as key opportunities, pointing to the region's abundant renewable and hydrocarbon resources as strategic assets in the energy transformation process.
