Watertown council greenlights license plate readers and flag raising

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – The Watertown City Council took care of a pair of items of business in Monday night's session. The council gave its approval to install over a dozen license plate readers across non-announced locations across the city. The purpose of these readers is to locate suspects while law enforcement is trying to find a certain vehicle. Watertown City Council approves a pair of flag raisings at latest meeting Instances where the plate readers would be used would be in cases of missing children, robbery suspects and drug dealers. Much of the cost will be covered by a grant from the state. There were some concerns about privacy, but authorities reassured the public. City council members also approved the raising of the Israeli flag on Thursday, May 1. Council members Cliff Olney, Lisa Ruggiero and Robert Kimball voted in favor while Mayor Sarah Pierce and Ben Shoen voted against the measure. The City of Watertown had recently reversed course and once again allowed flag raisings after a short moratorium. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
