Opportunity knocks for Shedeur Sanders

Some believe that the Browns, by starting rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders in tonight's preseason opener, are setting him up to fail. But not even the hopelessly dysfunctional Browns-is-the-Browns are that dysfunctional. They drafted him. Why would they want him to fail? Tonight, they need him. Presumptive Week 1 starter Joe Flacco is in bubble wrap. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel have hamstring injuries. It's Shedeur, by default. Is it ideal that the fourth man up in the rotation will suddenly get a heaping helping of live reps? No. But it's an opportunity for Shedeur. If he plays well, people will notice. Fans will notice. Buzz will build. Maybe he'll get more opportunities. Maybe, just maybe, he'll leapfrog Gabriel and Pickett and Flacco and become the Week 1 starter. Is it likely? No. But he's getting an opportunity to start a preseason NFL game. After plummeting in the draft, it's a development he should embrace. Tonight, we'll see whether he does.

5 things to watch for during Week 1 of NFL preseason

5 things to watch for during Week 1 of NFL preseason | A to Z Sports NFL Newsletter originally appeared on A to Z Sports. SUBSCRIBE to our emails here. 5 things to watch for during Week 1 of NFL preseason The Hall of Fame Game notwithstanding, Week 1 of the NFL preseason begins on Thursday. We will get our first look at the 2025 NFL Draft class in game action, as well as free agents who changed teams during the offseason. Here are our top five things to watch for during this weekend's slate. Jaguars WR/CB Travis Hunter playing both sides of the ball: Hunter is one of the most hyped-up rookies in recent memory, thanks to his expected attempt to play both offense and defense. Jacksonville has listed him as a starting WR and a second-string CB on its depth chart. It will be interesting to see how the Jaguars' coaching staff manages his workload. How he performs at each position will likely dictate where he gets the most snaps. Debut of Titans QB Cam Ward: Tennessee used their No. 1 overall draft pick on Ward, committing to him as the future of the franchise. He's had his ups and downs throughout training camp, but how he performs in preseason will give us a more accurate look at his abilities. Equally as important as making good throws will be Ward's command of the offense, such as getting in and out of the huddle quickly, making sure guys are lined up properly, and reading defenses. QB Aaron Rodgers debut with Steelers: The longest saga of the offseason was the back-and-forth between Rodgers and Pittsburgh. The 21-year-veteran finally signed with the franchise, and expects this season to be his last. The big question surrounding Rodgers is whether or not he has enough left in the tank to lead the Steelers to the Super Bowl. We're a long way from that, but a positive start in his debut would ease some nerves. Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler compete for Saints starting QB role: New Orleans is not tipping its hand as to who has the advantage, and has even promoted Jake Haener as in the mix. Haener is likely a longshot, but Shough and Rattler seem to be on pretty even footing. Whoever plays best in their game on Sunday should get the upper hand, but the battle could last through all three preseason matchups. Ben Johnson leads new-look Bears offense: Johnson was the hot name in this year's head coaching cycle, and he is now paired up with 2024 No. 1 overall pick QB Caleb Williams. Chicago remodeled its offensive line, and added a couple of new rookie weapons in tight end Colston Loveland and WR Luther Burden III. The pressure will be on Johnson to succeed quickly and get the most out of Williams and the Bears' offense. ESPN purchases NFL Network — what to know The NFL and ESPN have announced a non-binding agreement that ESPN will acquire NFL Network and certain other media assets owned and controlled by the NFL, including RedZone and NFL Fantasy. In exchange, the NFL will receive a 10 percent equity stake in ESPN. More terms of the agreement: NFL Network will be owned and operated by ESPN and fully integrated into ESPN DTC. NFL RedZone will still be available on NFL+, but ESPN will distribute it on traditional television. NFL Fantasy Football will merge with ESPN Fantasy Football. ESPN's platforms will license an additional three NFL games per season to air on NFL Network. The NFL will continue to own and operate its retained media businesses such as NFL Films, NFL+, the NFL Podcast Network, the NFL FAST Channel, and the official sites for the league's 32 clubs. Dak Prescott on Micah Parsons Dispute: ‘This Is Frustrating for Everybody'

National Football League Dak Prescott on Micah Parsons Dispute: 'This Is Frustrating for Everybody' Published Aug. 6, 2025 7:29 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had two words to sum up the escalating dispute between the organization and All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons: "F---, man." "He knows what that means," Prescott said about reaching out to Parsons, per Yahoo Sports. "It wasn't 'F--- you, Micah,' or 'F--- them.' It's more of a 'F---, this is frustrating for everybody involved.'" Prescott has experienced his own share of drawn-out negotiations in recent years, having gone back and forth with Jones through two extended disputes. Prescott inked a four-year, $160 million deal in 2021 and then a four-year, $240 million extension on the eve of the Cowboys' Week 1 season opener last fall after an awkward offseason in which Jones was wishy-washy about paying Prescott. "Not many people, especially here, have been in that position," Prescott said, per CBS Sports. "So I know what that means just to support him." While Prescott reached out to Parsons, team owner Jerry Jones has still yet to do so. Jones shared he has not spoken to Parsons nor started contract negotiations with his agent, David Mulugheta, since he demanded a trade on Aug. 1 . Jones also went on to say that he's uncertain if Parsons will play in the Cowboys' season opener against the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4, which also serves as the opener to the 2025 NFL regular season. ADVERTISEMENT Parsons continued his hold-in this week, watching the joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 5 from the sidelines in his white No. 11 jersey and sweats. [MORE: Micah Parsons Next Team Odds: Will Cowboys Trade Star DE?] Parsons and the Cowboys began contract discussions in January. Jones mentioned at the NFL's annual league meeting in April that he was communicating directly with Parsons about a potential new deal, alluding to a conversation the two had in March that Jones seemingly interpreted as a formal negotiation. According to Parsons, when his agent reached out after that meeting, "the team decided to go silent." Furthermore, Parsons let it be known that he wouldn't be doing any deal without his agent involved. In June, Parsons said that he was "hopeful" he'd have a new deal done before the start of training camp on July 20. One day before the start of camp, Jones seemingly took a dig at Parsons' durability by mentioning he missed a handful of games due to injury last season when asked by reporters for an update on the negotiations. While Parsons didn't respond directly, he reshared a social media post from former NFL star J.J. Watt about how someone "can publicly take a dig at … your star pass rusher simultaneously, right before the season begins." Parsons reported to the start of training camp but only observed from the sidelines and did not participate. Shortly after, he made a formal trade request, calling out the Jones family for how they'd handled contract negotiations and revealing that they haven't "had a single conversation" with his agent in a 1,000-plus-word statement posted online. Jones added more fuel to the fire two days later, saying that a situation from a decade ago involving former Cowboys star Dez Bryant — who publicly voiced his support for Parsons on social media — and Roc Nation Sports owner Jay-Z is the reason why he doesn't like to deal with agents. A first-round draft pick in 2021, Parsons has at least 12.0 sacks in each of his four seasons in Dallas and has 52.5 for his career. He also had 12 tackles for loss in 13 games last season. Parsons is going into the fifth and final year of his rookie deal and could be franchise tagged in 2026 without an extension. He's set to make $24.007 million in 2025. Anthony Richardson will start for Colts this week

The Colts play their first game of the preseason on Thursday night and head coach Shane Steichen revealed who will be starting at quarterback during a Tuesday press conference. Anthony Richardson will be taking snaps to open the game in Baltimore. Steichen told reporters that he expects Richardson to play a quarter and a half before returning to the bench. Daniel Jones is set to play the rest of the first half. Jones is also in line to start the second preseason game against the Packers and Steichen said that the playing time for the two quarterbacks will be divvied up the same way. The Colts listed Richardson or Jones as their No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart they released this week and the plan for the next two weeks suggests things will stay that way through the second preseason game. It remains to be seen if that will be enough time for Steichen to make up his mind about the Week 1 game against the Dolphins, but the play of both quarterbacks will be closely watched as that date draws closer.
