Jon Stewart Recalls Awkward Authenticity Discussions With Reps For Political Guests
Jon Stewart revealed on his podcast earlier this week that some politicians he had on 'The Daily Show' were only honest in the green room — and that their representatives seemed mystified when the concept of authenticity was discussed. Stewart was interviewing 'Pod Save America' co-hosts Jon Lovett and Jon Favreau on his 'Weekly Show' podcast when the latter called for politicians to ignore their representatives when attempting to speak their minds, prompting swift recognition from Stewart. 'We would invite all the press people from senators' offices and congressional people's offices to come to the show in the afternoon,' Stewart said Thursday. 'And we would do, like, a panel with them. I would talk to them and they would ask questions.' 'They inevitably [went], 'So, you know, my boss, I'd love to have him have a successful appearance on 'The Daily Show,' I think that would be really helpful for my boss. What's your advice on what would make a successful appearance?'' he added. Stewart continued, 'And I'd go, 'Oh, well, you know, your boss could come on the show and tell me what they think, and then what I'll do is, like, I'll say what I think about what they said, and then we'll talk about it.' And they'd be like, 'So the strategy is authenticity?'' ''I'm not telling you a strategy!'' he recalled. ''I'm saying just fucking talk like a person!'' Earlier, Stewart mentioned President Donald Trump and his open willingness to accept a $400 million jet from Qatar, half-joking that politicians who justify such things on his show are regularly outraged in the green room about having to go on television to defend them. 'I've always said the most truth you will hear on CNN and MSNBC and Fox is in the green room,' Stewart said. 'The green room is where the truth is. The green room is where political leaders and anchors say the real shit.' Stewart excoriated fellow pundit Jake Tapper earlier this week for publishing a book about former President Joe Biden's cognitive decline, and argued that a journalist should tell their viewers what is occurring as they learn it — instead of when it's profitable. As for honesty within his own circles, Stewart suggested Thursday that there's plenty of room. Stewart, a self-described Democrat who has been an outspoken political pundit for close to three decades, went on to argue that there should be 'excitement, not trepidation' within the party around how Democrats recover from the loss of the 2024 presidential election. Jon Stewart Shreds Democrats With Idea For New 3-Word Slogan
'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart on Thursday argued that Democrats who rallied behind President Joe Biden amid concerns over his stamina and cognitive abilities contributed to a 'last gasp' of the party's status quo. 'We need to overcome, I think, the stink,' said Stewart in the latest episode of his 'Weekly Show' podcast. 'By the way, if that is not a Democrat's slogan in 2028, something has gone terribly wrong — 'Overcome The Stink.'' Stewart likened Democrats standing by Biden as the former president faced questions over his health and ability to serve a second term (concerns that have led to allegations of a'cover-up') to how the Iraq War was an 'extinction event' for Republicans, setting the stage for President Donald Trump to emerge as a party leader. 'It has sown the seeds for a real — and it's an opportunity — for an interesting reinvention of what this Democratic Party can be,' said Stewart in an episode featuring 'Pod Save America' hosts Jon Favreau and Jon Lovett. Stewart added that there should be 'excitement, not trepidation' around how the Democratic Party recovers from the 2024 election, though perhaps not from Democrats who were closely aligned with Biden last year. 'I think anybody that has any of that stink on them is not going to be particularly successful,' Stewart said. Lovett, a former speechwriter for Barack Obama, said that Democrats have the energy of 'front of the classroom kids' as far as how they respond to teachers (in this case, party leaders), whereas Republicans have captured a 'back of the classroom energy.' He contrasted Democrats' current vibe with how Obama challenged Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary, even though she was 'marching' toward the nomination and had endorsements. Lovett added that so few Democrats were 'willing' to challenge Biden and lacked the 'fire' to do so, describing their inaction as an 'indictment' on the current party. 'It points to a kind of lack of assuredness in their own worldview. It points to this kind of ... consensus establishment mentality.' He continued, 'It's that the right person is the kind of person to say, 'You know what, we got a bunch of shit wrong.'' Check out more of the latest episode of 'The Weekly Show.' Jon Stewart Slams Trump as ‘F–king Wrongheaded' About How Tariffs Impact Families: ‘No Value in Moderation for Himself'
Jon Stewart thinks Donald Trump is 'f–king wrongheaded' in his moderation plans for families in the wake of his tariffs while not practicing any for himself. At the top of this week's 'The Weekly Show With Jon Stewart' podcast, the host pointed out that Trump's position that kids should be fine with two dolls and not 30 — an argument that went viral earlier this week — while practicing no moderation himself got to the crux of the issue with the president as a leader. 'I'm not sure there is a child that has received 30 dolls in the span of a year unless they are a Trump child, which gets us really to the crux of how f–king wrongheaded his entire approach may be,' Stewart said. 'He sees no value in moderation for himself. He is not leading through the exemplar of a dignified and less consumerist life. Every time there is another press conference within the Oval Office, another gold cherub gets it's wings.' He continued: 'F–k you for telling the American people, 'Oh you know what? So your kids have to go without.' Why don't billionaires? Why doesn't he say, 'You know what? Maybe you don't need $350 billion. Maybe you just need $10-12 billion.' Why isn't his scolding of excess in any way self-reflective and turned around to the people who have bought and sold this country?' Stewart's comments came after the president's remarks on China, their import market in the U.S., and how his tariffs might empty some shelves around the country and make daily costs for American families higher. 'They made a trillion dollars with Biden selling us stuff,' the president said. 'Much of it we don't need. Somebody said, 'Oh, the shelves are gonna be open.' Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more.' On Thursday, Vice President JD Vance further tried to explain Trump's meaning on excess and moderation. 'What I'd ask people is not whether they want two dolls, or five dolls, or 20 dolls for their kids, I'd ask American moms and dads, 'Would you like to be able to go into a pharmacy and know that the drugs your kids need are actually available to you as an American parent?'' Vance asked. 'Would you like to — God forbid — if your country goes to a war, and your son or daughter are sent off to fight, would you like to know that the weapons that they have are good, American-made stuff, not made by a foreign adversary?' Jon Stewart Taunts Trump By Exposing The 'Truly Shameless' Part Of His Administration
'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart called out President Donald Trump and other key members of his administration, especially Elon Musk, for evading accountability at every turn. 'If there's one thing that this administration does better than anybody I've ever seen it's play the victim,' Stewart said on his 'Weekly Show' podcast. 'I've never seen any people, ever, including when my kids were 3 and 2 years old, evade accountability and responsibility, and blame others in the way that these people do. It's truly shameless.' Musk offered to appear on 'The Daily Show' for an interview in February after Stewart criticized him during the broadcast. The tech billionaire and administration's DOGE leader had one condition: The interview would have to air unedited. Stewart quickly accepted, saying that's how most 'Daily Show' interviews air anyway. That was two months ago. Stewart said this week he's heard nothing since then, even after reaching out to Musk via DM to help make the interview happen. 'I got ghosted,' he said. 'I got left on read, man.' Musk is leaving the government soon, and 'Weekly Show' podcast producer Lauren Walker told Stewart that the Tesla CEO has said his departure is because of the 'nasty and unethical attacks from the left.' 'Completely, I'm sure, undeserved,' Stewart snarked in response. 'In no way reflective of standing on a stage with a chainsaw, celebrating the loss of livelihoods for tens of thousands of well-intentioned government workers, I'm sure.' Jon Stewart's Basketball Analogy Perfectly Explains Why He's 'So Mad' At Democrats
Jon Stewart hit nothing but net in describing the dilemma of Democratic voters who want to push back against Trump administration cuts. (Watch the video below.) A listener on his 'Weekly Show' podcast Thursday asked the 'Daily Show' host what 'ordinary people' can do as DOGE slashes agency workforces, especially at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Thousands have been laid off there, perhaps endangering the health care of veterans. In addition, cuts built into the GOP bill passed to avert a shutdown targeted veterans' benefits. Stewart accused elected leaders of failing to mobilize constituents into more meaningful action. Right now, voters are on their own, he said. 'That's the part that makes me so mad.' 'I liken it to if you're at a basketball game and your team's just getting the shit kicked out of them, and in the timeout, the players just turn to the crowd and go, 'Alright, you're in!'' he said. 'You're like, 'Wait ... I don't know how to play basketball.' And they're like, 'I don't care. We're fucking dying over here. Just get in there.'' Whether Stewart was inspired by the start of March Madness is anyone's guess. But he took his shot to make sense of the situation ― and he scored. 'It takes strategy and leadership from the top ... to empower people to particular tasks,' he continued. 'The usual shit is, 'Call your congressman.' They ignore that shit unless it's really targeted ... to a specific date or action.'
