Louise McSharry: I've ditched my intense hair routine but curl cream is a must

Some subscribe heavily to the incredibly strict 'curly girl method', which has rigid guidelines about the products you can and can't use and how you apply them. Some suggest a combination of three or four products is the secret to getting the glossy curls of your dreams. Others insist it's technique, and things like 'plopping' or the 'bowl method' are the answer. The truth is, it can all be a little too much. I spent a couple of years wearing my hair exclusively in its natural texture and experimenting with various methods. I discovered that there were some techniques that absolutely helped my hair reach its curliest peak, and yes, the use of multiple products could certainly enhance them. I also discovered that I simply don't have it in me to maintain an intense curl routine. Now, I break the rules. I brush my hair after my shower, I use products which contain sulphates because I really missed the lather when I used products without them, and I decided that when I want to wear my natural texture, I'm OK with it being less curly than it has the potential to be. What I am entirely dedicated to, however, is curl cream. Curl cream adds definition and shine while allowing your hair to fall into its natural curl or wave pattern, without it developing a stiff cast or becoming overly done. It's a simple 'your hair but better product', and I love it. Many curl experts will recommend that you only brush your hair in the shower, while it has conditioner in it, before carefully applying your chosen product to it afterwards. This definitely helps your hair to achieve its maximum curl potential, but these days my hair is long and I'm going for a grungier beachy vibe, so I apply some leave-in conditioner (I like Aveda's Botanical Repair Strengthening Leave-In Treatment, €42 via after the shower and brush it through. This results in looser, more lived-in waves, but obviously if your hair is coarser or curlier than mine, a different method might be better for you. Then, I apply a reasonably generous amount of curl cream (similar to the amount of conditioner I use) all over my hair, before scrunching it and allowing it to air dry. The amount or type of curl cream you use will depend on your individual texture and preference. So much of embracing your natural hair texture is about experimentation and having the confidence to ditch methods that don't work for you — this is my method five years in! At the moment, I'm loving Oribe's Curl Control Silkening Créme (€52 via It's light and leaves the air soft and glossy while providing definition. Another great option is Curlsmith's Weightless Air Dry Cream (€29.99 via which is also light but doesn't leave any crunch. For coarser hair, Ouai's Curl Créme (€34 via is creamy and easy to apply while delivering nourishment and definition. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more If you're just testing the curl cream waters, Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk (€9.99 via is a gorgeous leave-in conditioner which almost functions as a very light curl cream. Buying Irish I've been incredibly impressed by Iconic Bronze's launches of late. The brand, which began with false tan, has moved heavily into the cosmetics space, and in short, the products are great. The latest launch, Iconic Bronze Filter Glow, is a 'skin perfector', meaning it adds glow and evenness to the complexion, without any real coverage. There are plenty of products in this category these days, but this works well for the price point. Use it under foundation to add glow or on its own for a 'your skin but slightly better' vibe. Something old… Lots of us are familiar with the benefits of vitamin C in a skincare routine, but for those who aren't, they are numerous. It plays a vital role in collagen products, which boosts elasticity and firmness. It is known to brighten the skin and even to reduce dark spots or hyperpigmentation. It is an antioxidant, meaning it protects the skin from free radicals and pollutants, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and even contributes to hydration. In short — it's great. I've been using Dermalogica's brilliant Biolumin C Serum (€108 via as my vitamin C product for years now. It delivers ultra stable vitamin C, which provides all of the aforementioned benefits. It also features lactic acid, which provides light exfoliation. Texturally and experientially, it's a pleasure. The light serum glides on and, frankly, I love it. ... Something new I always feel excited when Jennifer Rock launches a new Skingredients product. The range is full of excellent products, all of which perform well, and you can trust that they have been carefully developed with intense consideration. The latest launch is 15% Vit C, E + Tri-Mushroom Skin Booster (€45 via which features a potent level of vitamin C alongside tocopherol, which adds extra antioxidant power and hydration. Tri-mushroom is a new ingredient for me but, according to the brand, it is highly nutritious and has been designed to optimise skin health. This booster is designed to be used alongside the existing products in the Skingredients family and has a liquidy texture which is slightly heavier than water but not as thick as a serum. It glides easily across the face and is designed to be used morning and night as part of your usual routine.

'Holy grail' curl cream that's creating 'forever fans' for taming frizz

Those blessed with a mane of bouncy curls or waves know all too well the struggle against frizz, especially when summer arrives. A mere peek at the sun or a brief encounter with humidity can set off a frizzy halo, transforming curls into something wild and unruly but curly-haired experts have found a solution and beauty fans are singing praises for its performance to tame stubborn frizz. The Weightless Air Dry Cream by Curlsmith, retailing at £23 for a one-off purchase (or £19.55 on subscription), gives defined and airy curls without any need for hairdryers or diffusers. Packed in a 237ml tube, the cream is formulated with nourishing ingredients like castor oil, babassu, jojoba, and murumuru butter, ensuring our tresses are well-fed and thoroughly moisturised. Described as a 'lightweight leave-in conditioner', it promises to 'enhance curl texture and hydrate the hair without weighing it down', reported the Mirror. It sits in competition with products like Only Curls' Hydrating Curl Creme (£18), known for its hydrating and nourishing properties due to ingredients such as shea butter, marula oil and aloe. Also in the mix is Umberto Giannini's Creme De Curl Control Cream, ideally paired with the Curl Jelly Scrunching Jelly – it's available for £17.50 on Amazon as a duo pack. Curlsmith Weightless Air Dry Cream Curlsmith's Weightless Air Dry Cream is designed to provide defined, supple curls without the customary crunch, residue, or greasy touch that other curl products tend to leave. Coined as a 'versatile' leave-in conditioner, a 5p-sized amount of this cream should be combed through damp hair using fingers, followed by the 'prayer hands' method to smooth out any excess. Then simply scrunch and allow to air dry naturally for perfect curls. Particularly suitable for those with finer hair who often find themselves bogged down by heavier products, Curlsmith claims this cream is light but also a solid base layer under a gel or mousse for those with thicker curls needing more hold. The Curlsmith cream is causing quite the stir amongst hair-care aficionados, garnering thousands of glowing reviews and an impressive 4.7-star rating based on over 1600 sparkling testimonials on the Curlsmith website. One individual couldn't hide their elation with the results on their hair, remarking: "I have thick hair with thin strands, and a mix of waves and curls. I've been through more products in my lifetime than I can count. I struggle with frizz, texture definition, and products weighing my strands down. This cream has been a game changer, and I will never go without! It leaves my hair hydrated, soft to the touch, defined, and bouncy. I often pair with either the air dry gel or wave spray and it's the perfect mix depending on the definition I'm going for." Elsewhere, a satisfied user commented on how well the product works for their specific type of tresses, explaining: "If you have low porosity hair like I do, then you know how easily our hair types get weighed down and greasy-looking after a few days of upkeep." They continued, expressing their fondness for the brand: "I genuinely love Curlsmith's lightweight products because I can layer and still have my hair looking fresh and bouncy, volumised with the hold my frizzy hair needs. I live in a high humidity environment and I sleep with my hair up in a pineapple in a bonnet (the girlies who get it, get it). I also layer this product with Curlsmith's protein Hold Me Softly Style balm and Curl Soufflé. This combination is *chefs kiss*. I am a forever fan." Dubbed the 'best product ever' by a thrilled Curlsmith enthusiast, one customer with 3C curls raved: "I have 3C curls and love this weightless air dry cream. It helps the curls hang together and not be frizzy and be soft instead of coarse. It's been super helpful in high humidity too! Huge fan!" While the Curlsmith Air Dry Cream has left many with a grease-free hairstyle, some found that it didn't quite meet their expectations. A three-star review from one user read: "Makes a great curl but left my hair overall quite waxy and greasy, very weighed down. Disappointed but I'll try again." Another user was equally impressed, sharing their daily routine: "I absolutely love this product! I use it everyday and I have the best moisturised coils. They feel soft and they have no frizz even on humid day!" Despite these few critiques, the Weightless Air Dry cream is largely celebrated as a miracle worker and 'holy grail' item that has been transformative for users. Available at Curlsmith for £23, it's hailed as a game-changer.

Beauty buffs 'swear' by 'lightweight' curl cream that tames frizz

The Weightless Air Dry Cream by Curlsmith has been hailed as a 'game changer' by beauty buffs and curl-enthusiasts alike for its ability to tackle frizz and define lacklustre curls in humid conditions Those of us graced and often-times burdened with a head full of bouncy curls or waves are all too familiar with the trials and tribulations of battling frizz, particularly when summer rolls in. Just a glance at the sun or a mere moment in the humidity can trigger that soft fuzz halo around our heads, turning our curls into something wild, untamed, and larger than life – and not in the charming way. It's reminiscent of Monica's iconic look from that episode of Friends in the Bahamas: "It's the humidity!". Yet, beauty fans and curly-haired mavens have been raving about a curl cream from renowned curly hair brand Curlsmith that promises to conquer the most relentless humidity and frizz, whether caused by UK heatwaves or tropical climes on holiday - leaving us with luscious, defined, and lightweight curls – all without the need for a hairdryer or diffuser. The Weightless Air Dry Cream is priced at £23 for a single purchase (or £19.55 with a subscription) in a 237ml tube and has been expertly crafted with enriching ingredients such as castor oil, babassu, jojoba, and murumuru butter to ensure our locks receive optimum nourishment and max moisture. Touted as a ' lightweight leave-in conditioner ', it 'enhances curl texture and hydrates the hair without weighing it down'. Moreover, this cream is made with the aim of delivering supple, defined curls minus the crunch, residue, or oily sensation often left behind by other curl products, which is always a triumph, reports the Manchester Evening News. As a 'versatile' leave-in conditioner, all you need is a 5p-sized dollop of Curlsmith's Weightless Air Dry Cream, which is then combed through soaking wet hair (use your fingers) before smoothing any excess onto strands using the 'prayer hands' technique. Following this, scrunch to form those curls and let it dry naturally. Those with finer hair types will be pleased to know that the brand claims it's also an excellent product for hair types that can 'easily get overwhelmed by heavier products' - although it also serves as a good base under gel or mousse for thicker curls requiring that extra bit of hold. This competes with the likes of Only Curls' Hydrating Curl Creme (£18), which provides similar benefits and results in terms of hydration, nourishment and definition, thanks to its ingredients such as shea butter, marula oil and aloe. Another top-notch product is Umberto Giannini's Creme De Curl Control Cream, which works best when used with the Curl Jelly Scrunching Jelly, available for £17.50 as a duo set on Amazon. Another similar product is the JVN Hair Complete Air Dry Cream, £24, which has been praised by shoppers for "reducing frizz and it brings out my waves". With high compliments coming from thousands of reviews, the Curlsmith cream has wowed hair-care enthusiasts and boasts an impressive 4.7-star rating from over 1600 glistening testimonials on the Curlsmith website alone. One person shared their joy at their hair's results and said: "I have thick hair with thin strands, and a mix of waves and curls. I've been through more products in my lifetime than I can count. I struggle with frizz, texture definition, and products weighing my strands down. This cream has been a game changer, and I will never go without! It leaves my hair hydrated, soft to the touch, defined, and bouncy. I often pair with either the air dry gel or wave spray and it's the perfect mix depending on the definition I'm going for." Another content user pointed out the product's effectiveness on their specific hair type: "If you have low porosity hair like I do, then you know how easily our hair types get weighed down and greasy-looking after a few days of upkeep. "I genuinely love Curlsmith's lightweight products because I can layer and still have my hair looking fresh and bouncy, volumised with the hold my frizzy hair needs. I live in a high humidity environment and I sleep with my hair up in a pineapple in a bonnet (the girlies who get it, get it). I also layer this product with Curlsmith's protein Hold Me Softly Style balm and Curl Soufflé. This combination is *chefs kiss*. I am a forever fan." Labelled as the 'best product ever', another satisfied Curlsmith fan said: "I have 3C curls and love this weightless air dry cream. It helps the curls hang together and not be frizzy and be soft instead of coarse. It's been super helpful in high humidity too! Huge fan!". Another user shared: "I absolutely love this product! I use it everyday on my curls. They feel soft and they have no frizz even on humid day!" Which is quite the feat. While many people tended to experience a grease-free 'do after using the Curlsmith Air Dry Cream, some users were left slightly disappointed that their hair didn't get on quite as well with the cream. One three-star reviewer noted: "Makes a great curl but left my hair overall quite waxy and greasy, very weighed down. Disappointed but I'll try again." For some, the 'weightless'-ness was too much, with one person stating it was 'almost too light'. They said: "Not my favourite curl cream. It's very, very light, almost too light that it doesn't hold my curls very well. It smells good and I like the fact that it's air dry. However, I would have to use a ton of product to make the curls hold." However, for the most part, the Weightless Air Dry cream has been hailed as a total dream and 'holy grail' product that has been 'life changing'. Get it from Curlsmith for £23 here.
