Louise McSharry: I've ditched my intense hair routine but curl cream is a must
Some suggest a combination of three or four products is the secret to getting the glossy curls of your dreams. Others insist it's technique, and things like 'plopping' or the 'bowl method' are the answer.
The truth is, it can all be a little too much. I spent a couple of years wearing my hair exclusively in its natural texture and experimenting with various methods. I discovered that there were some techniques that absolutely helped my hair reach its curliest peak, and yes, the use of multiple products could certainly enhance them. I also discovered that I simply don't have it in me to maintain an intense curl routine.
Now, I break the rules. I brush my hair after my shower, I use products which contain sulphates because I really missed the lather when I used products without them, and I decided that when I want to wear my natural texture, I'm OK with it being less curly than it has the potential to be.
What I am entirely dedicated to, however, is curl cream. Curl cream adds definition and shine while allowing your hair to fall into its natural curl or wave pattern, without it developing a stiff cast or becoming overly done. It's a simple 'your hair but better product', and I love it.
Many curl experts will recommend that you only brush your hair in the shower, while it has conditioner in it, before carefully applying your chosen product to it afterwards. This definitely helps your hair to achieve its maximum curl potential, but these days my hair is long and I'm going for a grungier beachy vibe, so I apply some leave-in conditioner (I like Aveda's Botanical Repair Strengthening Leave-In Treatment, €42 via brownthomas.com) after the shower and brush it through. This results in looser, more lived-in waves, but obviously if your hair is coarser or curlier than mine, a different method might be better for you.
Then, I apply a reasonably generous amount of curl cream (similar to the amount of conditioner I use) all over my hair, before scrunching it and allowing it to air dry.
The amount or type of curl cream you use will depend on your individual texture and preference. So much of embracing your natural hair texture is about experimentation and having the confidence to ditch methods that don't work for you — this is my method five years in!
At the moment, I'm loving Oribe's Curl Control Silkening Créme (€52 via arnotts.ie). It's light and leaves the air soft and glossy while providing definition. Another great option is Curlsmith's Weightless Air Dry Cream (€29.99 via boots.ie), which is also light but doesn't leave any crunch.
For coarser hair, Ouai's Curl Créme (€34 via spacenk.com) is creamy and easy to apply while delivering nourishment and definition.

If you're just testing the curl cream waters, Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk (€9.99 via boots.ie) is a gorgeous leave-in conditioner which almost functions as a very light curl cream.

I've been incredibly impressed by Iconic Bronze's launches of late. The brand, which began with false tan, has moved heavily into the cosmetics space, and in short, the products are great. The latest launch, Iconic Bronze Filter Glow, is a 'skin perfector', meaning it adds glow and evenness to the complexion, without any real coverage. There are plenty of products in this category these days, but this works well for the price point. Use it under foundation to add glow or on its own for a 'your skin but slightly better' vibe.
Something old…
Lots of us are familiar with the benefits of vitamin C in a skincare routine, but for those who aren't, they are numerous. It plays a vital role in collagen products, which boosts elasticity and firmness. It is known to brighten the skin and even to reduce dark spots or hyperpigmentation. It is an antioxidant, meaning it protects the skin from free radicals and pollutants, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and even contributes to hydration. In short — it's great. I've been using Dermalogica's brilliant Biolumin C Serum (€108 via dermalogica.ie) as my vitamin C product for years now. It delivers ultra stable vitamin C, which provides all of the aforementioned benefits. It also features lactic acid, which provides light exfoliation. Texturally and experientially, it's a pleasure. The light serum glides on and, frankly, I love it.
... Something new
I always feel excited when Jennifer Rock launches a new Skingredients product. The range is full of excellent products, all of which perform well, and you can trust that they have been carefully developed with intense consideration. The latest launch is 15% Vit C, E + Tri-Mushroom Skin Booster (€45 via skingredients.com), which features a potent level of vitamin C alongside tocopherol, which adds extra antioxidant power and hydration. Tri-mushroom is a new ingredient for me but, according to the brand, it is highly nutritious and has been designed to optimise skin health. This booster is designed to be used alongside the existing products in the Skingredients family and has a liquidy texture which is slightly heavier than water but not as thick as a serum. It glides easily across the face and is designed to be used morning and night as part of your usual routine.

Packers LB Ty'Ron Hopper showing 'ton of improvement' to start Year 2
Among the most improved players at Green Bay Packers training camp in 2025 is second-year linebacker Ty'Ron Hopper, who is more comfortable in the defense and better showcasing his athleticism and physicality at linebacker and on special teams this summer. "Hop's done a really nice job," coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday. "He's shown a ton of improvement really in every facet of his game, on defense, on we-fense (what the Packers call special teams). Certainly, we always knew he was going to be a physical presence, you could see that going back to his college tape. He's got a better understanding of what is required of him for that position, he's got a great understanding of our defense and he's gone out there and put together a lot of solid performances." Hopper, a third-round pick in 2024, has played 74 preseason snaps and is the team's second-highest graded defensive player at Pro Football Focus. Through two games, Hooper has 10 total tackles, zero missed tackles and a team-high four "stops," or a tackle creating an offensive failure, and he's allowed only one catch in coverage. Among all NFL linebackers with at least 60 snaps played this preseason, Hopper's PFF grade of 86.0 ranks third overall. His 13 special teams snaps have included only four snaps covering punts or kicks, so the opportunities to make impact plays for the third phase have been limited. Against the Colts, Hopper made a standout play when he beat a block at the line of scrimmage and chased down the running back for a loss. Hopper was in on three stops against the run in the preseason opener. The Packers have Quay Walker, Edgerrin Cooper and Isaiah McDuffie locked in as the top three linebackers in Jeff Hafley's 4-3 base defense, but Hopper has made a strong case for being the No. 4 option despite the addition of veteran Isaiah Simmons, who has struggled in preseason games. As a rookie, Hopper played only 18 snaps on defense across three games. Like most young players, he needed a development year, and he's now beginning the jump as a second-year player. Scottie Scheffler Appears To Have Called Out European Golf Fans
Scottie Scheffler Appears To Have Called Out European Golf Fans originally appeared on The Spun. Scottie Scheffler continued his incredible hot streak over the weekend after overcoming a four-stroke deficit in Sunday's BMW Championship to secure his 18th PGA Tour win. Like with most things over the past few years, Scheffler made it look easy as he punctuated his walk down of Scotland's Robert MacIntyre with an outstanding chip-in on No. 17 to put the dagger is his opponent's hopes. This past weekend marked the fourth time in his career that Scheffler had come back from four strokes or more through 54 holes. And it also gave him his fifth victory on the PGA calendar — making him the first golfer since Tiger Woods to post back-to-back seasons of 5+ wins. At one point during the tournament, MacIntyre turned and shushed a fan after draining a putt on No. 14 to save par — something Scottie was given a front row seat to — and it led to Scheffler recalling his own experience with a fan across the pond at this year's Open Championship. Golf fans in the U.S. tend to be viewed as more rowdy than the typical overseas spectator — especially with events like the WM Phoenix Open. But the four-time major champion says he's received his fair share of heckling from fans all across the globe. Scheffler calls out 'silly' European fan "I didn't see any of that. I played with Bob when we were in Scotland. I heard some fairly choice words when I was leading the tournament in Ireland," Scheffler told reporters Saturday. "I think it's part of it. People have a tendency to say things that are dumb. I can think of a few things that were said to me in the final round in Ireland that were very far over the line," he added. "If you're a fan, it's only going to fire the guy up more, and I think just do your best to behave out there. It can be a little bit silly sometimes." Whatever the fan said certainly didn't appear to affect Scottie too much, as he coasted to a 17-under win to capture yet another major for his growing trophy case. Scottie Scheffler Appears To Have Called Out European Golf Fans first appeared on The Spun on Aug 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

Sophie Cunningham MRI results reveal severity of Fever star's knee injury
Sophie Cunningham MRI results reveal severity of Fever star's knee injury originally appeared on The Sporting News On Sunday, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham left the Fever's rousing comeback win over the Connecticut Sun after only 10 minutes, clutching her right knee following a collision with Sun guard Bria Hartley. The nature of the incident and Cunningham's pained look in the aftermath sparked immediate fears that the sharpshooting guard had suffered a serious injury, something Indiana knows all too well this season. She was scheduled for an MRI on Monday, and on Tuesday afternoon, the Fever confirmed fans' worst fears. "The Indiana Fever announced today that guard Sophie Cunningham will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after suffering an injury during the team's game at the Connecticut Sun on Sunday afternoon," the team announced. "Cunningham sustained a season-ending injury in her right knee during the second quarter of the game and is expected to make a full recovery." MORE: Fever awaits Sophie Cunningham MRI results as Indiana slides in new power ranking In response to Cunningham's injury, Indiana has signed veteran guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract. Acquired from the Phoenix Mercury in an offseason trade, Cunningham quickly became a fan favorite in Indiana as the Fever sought to add prolific shooters around star point guard Caitlin Clark. In 30 games this season, Cunningham averaged 8.6 points per game and shot a career-best 46.9 percent from the floor, while making 43.2 percent of her shots from 3-point range. Cunningham, Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald are now all out with season-ending leg injuries, while Clark has missed the past 13 games with a groin injury. Indiana (19-16) remains in the thick of the WNBA playoff race, but the Fever's devastating run of injuries threatens to derail a season that once held so much promise.
