Packers LB Ty'Ron Hopper showing 'ton of improvement' to start Year 2
"Hop's done a really nice job," coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday. "He's shown a ton of improvement really in every facet of his game, on defense, on we-fense (what the Packers call special teams). Certainly, we always knew he was going to be a physical presence, you could see that going back to his college tape. He's got a better understanding of what is required of him for that position, he's got a great understanding of our defense and he's gone out there and put together a lot of solid performances."
Hopper, a third-round pick in 2024, has played 74 preseason snaps and is the team's second-highest graded defensive player at Pro Football Focus. Through two games, Hooper has 10 total tackles, zero missed tackles and a team-high four "stops," or a tackle creating an offensive failure, and he's allowed only one catch in coverage.
Among all NFL linebackers with at least 60 snaps played this preseason, Hopper's PFF grade of 86.0 ranks third overall.
His 13 special teams snaps have included only four snaps covering punts or kicks, so the opportunities to make impact plays for the third phase have been limited.
Against the Colts, Hopper made a standout play when he beat a block at the line of scrimmage and chased down the running back for a loss.
Hopper was in on three stops against the run in the preseason opener.
The Packers have Quay Walker, Edgerrin Cooper and Isaiah McDuffie locked in as the top three linebackers in Jeff Hafley's 4-3 base defense, but Hopper has made a strong case for being the No. 4 option despite the addition of veteran Isaiah Simmons, who has struggled in preseason games.
As a rookie, Hopper played only 18 snaps on defense across three games. Like most young players, he needed a development year, and he's now beginning the jump as a second-year player.

NFL Writer Points to NY Giants QB as Option for Cowboys
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When looking at the state of the QB rooms in New York and Dallas, the former suddenly looks safer heading into next season. That's not to say that Russell Wilson will have a better run than Dak Prescott, but the health of No. 4 in Dallas affected his most recent run. And before he went down, Prescott was off to a rough start. Over in New York, the Daniel Jones era is over. Wilson is a temporary starter while Jameis Winston signed on for two years, and Jaxson Dart joined as one of two first-round selections for the Giants. As Dart thrives throughout his first NFL preseason, Winston has suddenly become a favorite trade target for NFL writers to talk about. Since it might only be a matter of time before Dart gets moved to No. 2 on the depth chart, Winston could hold some solid value in the trade market. Jameis Winston #19 of the New York Giants throws a pass during the third quarter of an NFL Preseason 2025 game between New York Giants and Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium on August 09, 2025 in Orchard Park, New York. MoreOne NFL writer listed Winston as a quarterback the Cowboys should consider for Prescott's backup slot. "The Cowboys should try and work out another trade with the Giants this year, targeting Jameis Winston. As it stands, Winston is third on the depth chart behind Russell Wilson and rookie Jaxson Dart. The Giants also have Tommy DeVito, meaning they could stand to part with Winston," writes On SI's Randy Gurzi. "Of all the options out there, Winston would be the biggest addition. He could also be the biggest bust. Known for taking chances, the former No. 1 overall pick once threw for 5,109 yards but had 33 touchdown passes and 30 interceptions." Winston is one of the top backups in the NFL. The former No. 1 overall pick is a one-time Pro Bowler who fizzled out in Tampa Bay, where he was drafted. After five seasons as a starter, Winston had to start adjusting to life as a backup. He suited up for the New Orleans Saints for four years and spent the past season with the Cleveland Browns. Last year, Winston started seven of the 12 games he played. The veteran quarterback went 2-5 as a starter. Winston completed 61 percent of his passes for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The Cowboys traded for the young veteran Joe Milton back in April. So far, Dallas doesn't seem pleased with Milton's sample size in the preseason. Since Prescott is healthy, the Cowboys aren't in need of an emergency acquisition. If anything changes, maybe they could give the Giants a call. For more New York Giants and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Why Tyler Warren could be the 'real deal' in Indy
Yahoo Fantasy analyst Matt Harmon and contributor Ray Garvin debate if fantasy managers should worry about the rookie tight end in Indianapolis with Daniel Jones at the helm. Hear the full conversation on the 'Yahoo Fantasy Forecast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript We got the Colts offense with Daniel Jones here. So you might have to sell this a little bit here, but I am willing to be open. Well, let's just start with the obvious. First is volume and opportunity, right? There was no tight end of consequence in this offense last year. Don't give me Mo Alie-Cox, Kyle Granson, Will Mallory, none of that, right? He was picked a few spots after Colton Loveland. Some people thought that Tyler Warren could be the first tight end selected. He comes off pick 14. The most commonly selected paired-up mock draft parent, he wore number 44, Dallas Clark comps running wild. But I just want to say this. From the time, and I am notlet me be very clear, I am not in any way, shape, or form comparing this situation to that of Brock Bowers or the player Brock Bowers, but a lot of people were hesitant on that. I remember on draft night, peopleI'm off. I want no part, just flat out, I want no part of it. They don't have the quarterbacks to get him the ball, and you saw 150 targets later. Bowers is a generational talent. I don't believe that Tyler Warren is that, but you also, as a tight end, and he played tight end in college, you don't go out in a P5 conference and catch 100 passes. You're just not in the Big Ten; you just don't do some of those things. So, his ability to win is real, okay. His ability to get down the field and win is real, and we've seen that in small spurts throughout the preseason. This is a necessity pick. They need an easy button option for whoever's playing quarterback in this offense. I love Josh Downs. Go back to the time that Josh Downs spent in North Carolina. His problem is there's always just something, his inability to be on the field consistently. Pittman is fine. Pierce runs his allotment of routes. It is Tyler Warren's season over the middle of the field. They're using him down the field and in those instances where you get some of that rushing work, which he's done throughout camp. Like, this is just a tight end that may not be in the best environment, but I also don't think Daniel Jones is gonna be slinging the ball all over the field, going through progressions, 345 reads, coming back. It's gonna be finding your primary or getting the ball out of bounds. This is an opportunity plus talent, skill set, match fit. I have not been worried about Tyler Warren at all, and with Daniel Jones as the starter, I think it's even better than Anthony Richardson. Close

2025 NFL MVP betting, odds: Public bettors backing Joe Burrow; big bets on Lamar Jackson
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow put up an incredible season last year, compiling 4,918 passing yard and 43 touchdowns while throwing nine interceptions. He also was third in the NFL with a total QBR of 74.7, the highest of his career. However, the Bengals went 9-8 and missed the postseason. The betting public is expecting an MVP season from Burrow this year. Burrow (+600) is tied for the third-best odds at BetMGM to win the 2025 NFL MVP award with Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen, the 2024 MVP, but behind the favorite and two-time MVP Lamar Jackson (+550) of the Baltimore Ravens. Yet Burrow has the most bets and total dollars wagered to win MVP at multiple sportsbooks. "Burrow is the most-bet player and our biggest liability [among realistic candidates]," BetMGM NFL trader Christian Cipollini told Yahoo Sports. Burrow has 15.7% of all MVP wagers at BetMGM sportsbooks, along with 24.3% of the handle. Over the past few weeks, Jackson has moved into the position of consensus MVP favorite at sportsbooks, albeit just slightly ahead of Allen and Burrow. "Jackson is the most-bet player to win MVP with us in terms of accumulation," Jamey Pileggi, risk manager at Circa Sports, said. "We moved based on liability and just overall popularity that the public seems to have for him in this market." There are two big reported bets on Jackson to win MVP at multiple sportsbooks as well: $50,000 on Jackson to win NFL MVP at ESPN BET at +550 odds to win $275,000. $50,000 on Jackson to win NFL MVP at Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas at +600 to win $300,000. After a historic rookie season in which he led his team to the NFC championship game, Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (+750) has the second-most wagers (8.5%) and total money bet (8.1%) in the MVP market at BetMGM. The Commanders still have yet to sign WR Terry McLaurin, who is looking for a new contract. Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (+700), a two-time NFL MVP, has the third-most bets and total dollars wagered. Ever since Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson won the MVP in 2012, 12 straight quarterbacks have won the award.
