From shelters to rent help: How WellSpan is backing housing fixes
WellSpan Health has committed $3.5 million to address housing challenges in central Pennsylvania over the next three years, according to an announcement. The funds will be distributed among 12 organizations, each tasked with developing and implementing innovative housing solutions. 'At WellSpan, the strength of our communities lies in the partnerships we build and investment in their unique needs,' said Roxanna Gapstur, president and CEO of WellSpan Health, in the announcement. 'Our mission goes beyond the walls of our hospitals and clinics to address the root causes of health issues for the people we serve in central Pennsylvania. By working hand in hand with local organizations, we are creating pathways for every individual to thrive.' The majority of the funds, $3 million, will be distributed through WellSpan's Imagine grant funding. Each recipient will receive $750,000 over three years. The recipients include Lebanon County Christian Ministries, South Central Community Action Programs, LifePath Christian Ministries and Transitions of PA. The remaining $333,200 will be distributed through WellSpan's Inspire grants, which are designed to create measurable impact in advancing community health. The recipients of these grants include Bell Socialization Services, Affordable Housing Advocate, New Hope Ministries, Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Lebanon Lancaster Habitat for Humanity, Lebanon Rescue Mission and Housing Development Corporation MidAtlantic. Additionally, York Habitat for Humanity will receive a $200,000 trust-based grant to support phase three of the Chestnut Street Revitalization project. 'We are proud to provide this support because we know that a safe, stable home is more than shelter — it's the starting point for a healthier, more hopeful life,' said Dr. Michael Seim, senior vice president and chief quality officer of WellSpan Health, in the announcement. 'Through this investment, we're building stronger communities from the ground up.' The funds will be used for a variety of initiatives, including street outreach, emergency housing, shelters, hotel stays, rental and utility assistance, eviction prevention, housing affordability advocacy and community assessments. LifePath Christian Ministries, for example, will use the funds to support a transformative relocation project to the former Pewterex factory building. This initiative will co-locate critical services including the men's shelter, flex/family shelter, cold weather shelter, administrative offices, kitchen and dining services and create a shared space for community partners. Transitions of PA will use the funds to support the Pathways to Housing Stability project, a survivor-centered initiative aimed at preventing homelessness among individuals affected by domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. South Central Community Action Programs will use the funds to support a regional housing initiative designed to expand impact in Franklin County and deepen engagement in Adams County. Lebanon County Christian Ministries will use the funds to support a multi-tiered strategy to address both urgent housing needs and long-term systemic challenges. Including these investments, WellSpan will have contributed a total of $17.65 million to address housing needs over the next three years. Harrisburg Police officer on paid leave after being charged in domestic incident
YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Harrisburg Police officer is on paid leave after being charged in a domestic incident Sunday at his York County home, charging documents show. Lee Brown, 39, of Mount Wolf, is accused of grabbing and yanking a woman off a couch and injuring her, while they were at home, along Market Street in East Manchester Township, charging documents filed by York County Regional Police Department state. Harrisburg Police confirmed that Brown is an officer with them and that he was placed on paid leave following the incident. Police said the victim was able to text someone, 'please help me, call the police,' after Brown allegedly grabbed her. The woman came running out of the house after police arrived just after 12:30 a.m. She was soaking wet, crying and reported that she didn't feel safe. Police said they took her to a community park nearby to talk about the alleged incident. Charging docs show the victim related how Brown allegedly told her that if police got involved, there would be a shootout. Brown and the woman were out drinking at a members-only bar. While on their way home, police said, they reportedly started to argue. Police said when they got home, the woman went to lie down on the couch, and that's when Brown allegedly squirted her with a water gun and poured water on her. When she tried to get him to stop, that is when he allegedly grabbed her and pulled her off the living room couch, police said. The victim had scrapes on her leg, ribs and shoulder. Police said in the charges, she reported getting those marks from a coffee table made out of a slab of a large tree that still has bark on the edges. State Trooper injured after fleeing driver 'intentionally rammed' cruiser during I-81 chase Brown said he was 'just messing' around with the victim when he was squirting her with the water gun, and allegedly denied getting physical, but claimed that he was struck in the mouth. The charges state Brown showed officers a video he took on his phone that showed the woman crying and trying to cover her face while he was allegedly antagonizing her. Brown then reportedly told police to arrest both of them 'because he knows how domestic violence incidents get handled,' charging docs show. Arrangements were made for the alleged victim to stay elsewhere, and while she was packing her bags, she found that her underwear was all cut up, and her Apple watch was shoved in the trash can. Brown allegedly denied any involvement in that. A report from WellSpan Health showed the woman sustained multiple abrasions and a contusion to her left rib from the incident, police said. Brown faces a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and summary charges of harassment and criminal mischief. Brown was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Thomas Reilly, who set unsecured bail at $15,000, which he posted. His preliminary hearing is set for July 30. WellSpan Health sues Inch & Co. to transfer ownership of York County sports complex
YORK, Pa. (WHTM) — Nearly eight months after Inch & Co. broke ground on a new premier sporting complex in York County, they are being sued by the sponsor of the project, WellSpan Health. abc27 news reported back in September 2024, when the York County-based Inch & Co. first broke ground on a new 243,000-square-foot WellSpan Sports Complex located at 275 East Seventh Avenue. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now The new complex was set to debut in early 2026, but that may no longer be the case. Now, nearly eight months later, WellSpan Health has filed a lawsuit against Inch & Co. to seize ownership of the future sporting complex property after Inch & Co. failed to hold up its end of the two parties' agreement. Attached below is the full lawsuit: DocumentHandlerDownload According to the lawsuit, which was filed on April 21, 2025, WellSpan entered into an agreement with Inch & Co. stating that the construction company was to raise a certain amount of money from third-party investors, following WellSpan's $5 million investment. WellSpan says Inch & Co. had nine months from the 'Offering Date' to raise these funds, which they did not do. As a result of this breach of contract, WellSpan wants Inch & Co. to transfer to them ownership of the sporting complex property in addition to having them 'pay all costs associated with the respective transfer, including without limitation, transfer taxes, recording fees, and legal expenses.' Crumbl Cookies sued for nearly $24 million; here's why In the lawsuit, WellSpan says on March 4, 2025, Inch & Co. acknowledged their contractual obligations, but requested that WellSpan reimburse them for incurred costs related to the project's design, totaling $230,574.09. Furthermore, Inch & Co. requested that they have an opportunity to purchase the property back from WellSpan if they were able to raise the funds needed for the project. WellSpan denied these requests. In response to the lawsuit, WellSpan told abc27 News the following: WellSpan is no longer a sponsor of what was going to be called the WellSpan Sports Complex. This was an exciting opportunity for WellSpan to provide local and regional athletes with expert medical care provided by WellSpan Sports and Orthopedic Care. After significant time expended in joint planning, we are disappointed this specific effort could not come to fruition. WellSpan Health abc27 News also reached out to Inch & Co. for more information, but did not hear back at the time of this publication. This is a developing story.
