Fighting obstacles, Lebanon surfing team looks to clinch Asian Games 2026 berth

CHINNAI: In recent years, Lebanon has endured hardships due to the conflict in West Asia, which has had a significant impact on the country. The unrest has also severely impacted the growing surfing community and slowed down the progress of a sport that is still in its early stages. Surfing has encountered numerous challenges, with surfers finding it difficult to train amid the turmoil. Despite the obstacles, the community remains deeply connected to surfing, not just as a sport, but as a vital part of their identity. Alfred Badr, who is the most experienced surfer in Lebanon's men's team in the upcoming Asian Surfing Championships here, shared how the country is coping with the challenges and keeping the sport relevant. 'Unfortunately, this (challenge) is part of our culture, so we always deal with it in a way by surfing. There were restrictions on certain places where we could not go but at the end of the day, we keep on pushing and always find a way to keep surfing. We are here to show our skills and to show people that no matter what, we can do good in the water,' the 40-year-old Badr, a graffiti artist, told TOI . 'The way you behave in the water sets the example for others to follow. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like U.S. Cardiologist Warns Aging Seniors About Blueberries for Breakfast WellnessGuide Learn more Undo We have the responsibility to perform well and to behave in a way that pushes the culture in the right direction. During tough times, I remain confident and determined, which in turn gives confidence to the coming generations.' After securing a quota for the Asian Games last year, Lebanon were unable to participate in any competitions due to inadequate funding. However, the team members made sure to stay fit by training whenever possible. Christopher Dirany, who has over a decade of experience in surfing, described what the sport means to him and his compatriots. 'Surfing is like my escape route and therapy from daily life, the stress of the daily life that we have. So, whenever you are in the water, you disconnect and all you think about is where the next wave is, where I am going to do the next turn. 'With the tough situation that we have in Lebanon, the surfers have to go to work and travel. In our country, we have to pay to enter the beach and this is something which is not practical for all. So, imagine you have to pay every single time you want to go and surf,' Dirany said. Badr chipped in, saying, 'The ocean is supposed to be free for everyone. So, that is part of the challenge that we kind of face.' While it is difficult to find a good beach and surf, Badr feels that it is not the main issue as there are other problems which need to be looked after. With the Asian Championships offering a quota for the Asian Games, Lebanon will want to seize the opportunity. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

Family in Ludhiana protests with body of daughter after father held in police custody.

Ludhiana: A poor auto-rickshaw driver picked up by police in connection with a Pocso case of abduction was unable to see his dying daughter for three days. His nine-year-old child, a cancer patient, died on Tuesday after allegedly missing critical treatment — while her father remained in what the family claims was illegal custody. The grief-stricken family of this auto-rickshaw driver staged a dramatic protest against police outside the deputy commissioner's office in the mini secretariat on Wednesday, where it placed the body of his daughter on the pavement, claiming her death could have been prevented had her father not been taken away and held for three days in connection with a minor girl's abduction case. The auto-rickshaw driver said: "My daughter needed urgent treatment, but the police didn't listen. They held me without reason. I was released only after my daughter died. I want justice." The Incident The family claims that two police officers and a local man identifying himself as a social worker had picked up the man on July 27 around 8 pm from his house in Haibowal area. The police allegedly accused him of involvement in the abduction of a minor girl — an incident for which his cousin had been arrested already. The man claims that despite informing the cops that his daughter had critical ailment and required medical attention, all his pleas were ignored. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Doctor: If You Eat Banana Every Day, This Is What Happens WellnessGuide Learn more Undo He was allegedly kept at the Jagatpuri police post until Tuesday, when his family informed him of his daughter's death. The girl, they said, had missed life-sustaining care in his absence. The family also accused the so-called social worker of assaulting the driver physically in custody and demanding ₹8 lakh from him to "settle" the case. They further allged that this social worker had personal ties to the family of the abducted girl, raising concerns of conflict of interest. Police Response Police arrived at the protest site shortly after it began and collected a written complaint from the family. Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-III) Kanwalpreet Singh confirmed that an FIR had been lodged earlier this month against the auto-rickshaw driver's cousin in the alleged abduction and rape of a minor girl under the Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. ADCP Kanwalpreet Singh said: "During questioning, the accused named the auto-rickshaw driver as an accomplice, which is why we summoned him for verification. He informed us about his daughter's illness, and we let him go the same day. His daughter's death is tragic, but the protest appears to be an attempt to exert pressure on police to clear his name." The ADCP also confirmed that the department would also investigate the allegations against the social worker, including claims of assault and extortion. "We are verifying the facts. If any wrongdoing is found — by police or civilians — it will be acted upon," he said. Ongoing Investigation While no action has been taken against the officers involved, police claim to be probing both the initial abduction case and the counter-allegations raised by the auto-rickshaw driver's family. The girl's death has added a tragic dimension to an already complex case, raising questions about due process, custodial protocol, and the intersection of justice and medical neglect. Waste segregation scores blow the lid off messy tales in Chandigarh

1 2 Chandigarh: In a city that prides itself on being clean and green, the latest Swachh Survekshan results have delivered a harsh reality check. Chandigarh scored a dismal 14 marks in the source segregation category — a key component in the ministry of housing and urban affairs' cleanliness rankings — raising serious questions about both civic enforcement and public participation. The low score isn't just a number; it's a reflection of a broken system where citizens routinely hand over mixed garbage to door-to-door collectors, and the municipal corporation (MC) fails to enforce segregation at the source. While segregation is happening at material recovery facilities (MRFs) across the city, the damage is already done by the time the waste reaches there. "We gave people bins, we gave them instructions — but what we didn't give was accountability," said a source within the MC. Back in June 2017, the MC launched a grand campaign at Tagore Theatre, distributing green and blue bins to residents with much fanfare. The goal was simple: separate wet and dry waste at the source. But the initiative fizzled out, with most households reverting to old habits and the MC failing to follow up with strict ground-level enforcement. Today, door-to-door collectors occasionally remind residents to segregate waste, but without any real consequences, the message is largely ignored. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Doctor: If You Eat Banana Every Day, This Is What Happens WellnessGuide Learn more Undo The result? A city that talks cleanliness but struggles to practice it. Now, with the Swachh Survekshan results out, the MC is finally waking up. Officials say heavy challaning and stricter enforcement are on the cards. A high-level meeting is being planned to address the issue and revamp the city's approach to waste management. "We've tried requesting. Now we'll try enforcing," an MC official told TOI, hinting at a tougher stance in the days ahead. MSID:: 122769321 413 |

60 cases against them, how gang orchestrated series of house robberies in NCR

Noida: Dressed in formal clothes and driving around high-income neighbourhoods in Delhi-NCR in a sleek Honda City, the gang looked nothing like house burglars. That's what made them effective. Even security guards of gated societies rarely stopped them. Once they identified unoccupied homes, the men would return, often in broad daylight, break the locks, and flee with valuables ranging from gold jewellery to electronics. On Thursday night, their run came to an end after a gunfight with cops. When signalled to stop, the gang tried to speed away and opened fire at the police vehicle. During the chase, their car lost control and came to a halt. The men stepped out and fired again, but police returned fire, injuring Sanjeev. He was arrested on the spot, while the others were caught in a combing operation later. Cops seized two illegal pistols, 500 grams of gold jewellery, tools worth Rs 2 lakh, an Apple watch, and other electronic items from the Honda City, which too was impounded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Doctor: If You Eat Banana Every Day, This Is What Happens WellnessGuide Learn more Undo Police said the gang members met two years ago in a Delhi jail and came together after their release. Since then, they've targeted homes in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Haryana. Investigators believe they had recently burgled houses in Noida sectors 12 and 20 and were preparing for another hit, having already identified six new targets. Between them, the trio has over 60 criminal cases. Sanjeev alone is facing charges in 32 cases, most of them registered in Delhi. Aman has 13 cases in Noida and Delhi, and Sarvpal has 28. "They lived lavishly, selling stolen goods at low rates and spending freely," said additional DCP Sumit Shukla, adding that the gang may be linked to more than 100 burglaries. The Noida DCP has announced a Rs 25,000 reward for the team that tracked and arrested the suspects.
