Sorry Bo, Being Good At Striking Is ‘Never Happening'
Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC Time to dust off the wrestling shoes. Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight Bo Nickal, suffered his first professional loss against Reinier de Ridder in the co-main event of UFC Des Moines this past weekend (Sat., May 3, 2025), absorbing a devastating knee to the liver that crumbled him from inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa (watch highlights). Advertisement Much dialogue has been about the promising prospect's loss, with many people dogpiling on the outspoken three-time NCAA Division I national champion. However, his gym remains supportive, urging fans and detractors alike to stay calm and emphasizing that Nickal is still developing as a fighter. Fellow standout wrestler Henry Cejudo also shared words of encouragement with Nickal. Today, former UFC Heavyweight, Brendan Schaub — now an 'insider' podcaster believes Nickal must lean on his elite wrestling to sustain a successful UFC career. 'There aren't enough hours in the day for where Bo's striking is at to get to an elite level. There just aren't,' Schaub said on his podcast. 'Bo is an elite athlete, but that's how hard striking is. Striking in MMA takes a long time to get comfortable with and to execute a game plan, and he's just not there. It doesn't matter who his coaches are—it's never happening. Never happening!' Advertisement 'So, today, his coaches should say, 'Bo, if you're going to win and have a career in the UFC, you've got to dominate. So, what are we going to work on? Your wrestling, ground-and-pound, and submissions. Forget your striking. We're going to do just enough so you don't look like a moron.' But if they say, 'Schaub, take it easy, his striking is really good in the gym, we're not focused on wrestling,' I'll tell you, he won't last long,' Schaub added. 'When he's forced to strike, you guys know I love Bo, but I've seen better guys on the regional scene, on Contender Series. It's just not there. That's okay!' Schaub concluded. 'If this were a video game, his striking is a 1 and his wrestling is a 10. Why the f—k are we trying to win with the 1?' There is no doubt Nickal will rebound from this disappointing loss and continue to evolve as a fighter, with only eight professional fights under his belt. The question is, how? More from

Des Moines native Jeremy Stephens falls in UFC homecoming to Mason Jones
The song '400 Degreez' by Juvenile rained through the speakers inside Wells Fargo Arena. The Des Moines faithful were on their feet when the hometown favorite Jeremy Stephens made his walkout to the UFC octagon on May 3. But fellow lightweight Mason Jones heard the noise and played spoiler to the homecoming festivities in enemy territory. The Welsh fighter earned a unanimous decision win over Stephens, who made his UFC return after a nearly four-year hiatus from the company. 'I just want to go out there and destroy people and I hit Jeremy with so many big shots and I was wrecking the body … I felt like I could've finished him,' Jones said. '… the guy is durable, he's very durable.' Stephens had his moments inside the octagon. He took part in an exchange in the second round where he landed a few clean blows that bloodied Jones. Ultimately, Jones fended off major damage and kept the momentum on his side. During round one, Stephens was forced to defend a barrage of leg kicks from Jones. After a violent second round, Jones relied on his grappling to smother Stephens on the ground in round three. Jones improved to 12-2 in his career while Stephens dropped to 28-20. 'For my career to flourish, his must end and I had to finish that," Jones said. "I had to finish his career, and I wanted to send him to retirement, and I wanted to knock him out so badly, but he is who he is. He's Jeremy 'Heathens' Stephens and when that name came across my desk I was like, 'Listen, I'm going to give him a fire fight.'' UFC on ESPN 67 video: Amazat Bekoev smashes 'TUF' winner Ryan Loder
UFC on ESPN 67 video: Amazat Bekoev smashes 'TUF' winner Ryan Loder Amazat Bekoev now has back-to-back finishes to start his octagon tenure after battering "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Ryan Loder at UFC on ESPN 67. Bekoev (20-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) made quick work of things Saturday's card at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, connecting with the hands early and often. He put Loder (7-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) on the ropes, then didn't stop until a final knockdown led to the TKO finish at the 2:44 mark of Round 1 in the middleweight bout. Check out the replay of Bekoev's handiwork in the video below (via X): After campaigning hard to join the UFC roster, Bekoev made a successful debut at UFC 311 in January, scoring a first-round knockout of Zachary Reese. He followed that up with this finish, and now has some momentum behind his name at 185 pounds. "I know he has high-level wrestling, but this is my time," Bekoev said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. "I don't want to fight anymore on Fight Nights, I want to fight on the big shows. This is my second finish in the first round. Mick Maynard, I told you I will not disappoint you."
