Sixers to host Timberwolves in preseason game

With still a few months before the Philadelphia 76ers begin their preseason campaign in early October, the schedule is slowly coming together. The Minnesota Timberwolves released their preseason schedule on Thursday morning, featuring a contest against the Sixers to be played on Oct. 17 in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center (at least, I think it's still called that…). The Sixers' preseason schedule is going to be a bit different than seasons past, with the squad starting things off in the NBA's Abu Dhabi Games 2025, slated for Oct. 2 and Oct. 4. Typically, this is when teams are starting their training camps and holding media days. Instead, teams playing outside of North America during preseason are able to open their camps a bit earlier than the rest, on Sept. 24. This includes the Sixers, the Brooklyn Nets, the New York Knicks, the New Orleans Pelicans and the Phoenix Suns. The teams remaining in the country will start their camps a few days later, on Sept. 29. This is just the third confirmed preseason contest for Philadelphia so far including the two to be played in Abu Dhabi. Now, who will actually be available for those contests from the Sixers after the injuries the team entered the offseason with? We will just have to wait and see. Not sure who is even on the Sixers' roster at this point? No problem, we have you covered here with our 2025-26 roster tracker. For now, we go back to offseason limbo. How fun!

Philly's biggest puzzle: The road to a new Sixers arena

The Sixers' U-turn to stay put in South Philly earlier this year upended Comcast Spectacor's $2.5 billion blueprint to reimagine the sports complex. Why it matters: They're not just building a new arena — they're rewriting a playbook for the area that's already set in motion. Catch up quick: The Wells Fargo Center (soon to be Xfinity Mobile Arena) was supposed to be the backbone of Spectacor's 2024 plan for a buzzing South Philly sports complex that would bring new hotels, housing and restaurants over 10 years. The company recently dumped $400 million into arena upgrades, planning to keep it around for years as new amenities and housing were built around it. Then Spectacor would eventually replace the center with a new venue on the parking lot between it and Lincoln Financial Field, per the Inquirer. The Phillies partnered with Spectacor on part of the original plan. (The team declined Axios' request to comment.) Yes, but: The plan's been flipped. Spectacor now has to build a brand-new arena first — and redraw a roadmap already underway. When Comcast Spectacor and Sixers owner Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment partnered on the new deal, they accelerated the arena timeline to at least 2031. And that could even be bumped to 2030 for the inaugural season of the city's WNBA team. How it works: Comcast Spectacor is now finalizing the construction process and infrastructure improvements to build the new arena that will replace the Wells Fargo Center, a company spokesperson tells Axios. Only then will they reassess and adjust the broader "master plan," the spokesperson added, declining to elaborate. Meanwhile, design firm Populous and architect Moody Nolan were selected in June to design the new arena. The big picture: Parts of Spectacor's original plan are underway. The $15 million upgrades to Xfinity Live! are expected to kick off soon. The intrigue: The status of other first-phase projects is up in the air, including a mid-size concert venue, hotel and retail space — all of which had a 2028 completion date. Some were supposed to break ground this year. Comcast declined to comment on their status. What we don't know: The precise location of the new arena. Comcast hasn't commented on whether it'll take over the same site as the Wells Fargo Center or be moved. And how construction will affect residents, fans, traffic — and Philly's sacredtailgating culture. What they're saying: Ken Anderson, vice president and civic sector leader at the global design firm Stantec, tells Axios that among his biggest concerns is how the new arena will complement the existing stadiums and new amenities. Still, he notes, building the arena first could buy Spectacor more time to plan the trickier pieces — like housing, restaurants and hotels.

The Phillies will begin the second half of the MLB season with a three-game homestand against Millville, New Jersey, native Mike Trout and the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. The Phillies are 55-41 and sit in first place in the NL East, leading the New York Mets by a half game. Philadelphia had two players named to the 2025 All-Star Game in Kyle Schwarber and Zack Wheeler, but the latter opted not to participate to prepare for the second half of the season. The team's ball boy, Adam Crognale, was also voted to serve on the MLB's All-Star Ball Crew. However, it was still an eventful week for the Phillies as Schwarber was named the MVP of the 2025 MLB Star Game after his swing-off performance helped the National League defeat the American League. In the first-ever swing-off, Schwarber smacked three dingers into the seats and put on a show for the crowd at Truist Park in Atlanta. Maybe that will carry into the first three-game homestand of the second half of the season? Time will tell. Tickets for this weekend's series are available online. Xfinity Mobile Arena: Wells Fargo Center signage removed as South Philly stadium rebrand begins

The Brief Wells Fargo Center signage was removed from the South Philadelphia arena as it prepares for a name change. Comcast Spectacore and Harris-Blitzer announced in May that the arena will be renamed the Xfinity Mobile Arena. While preparations are underway, the name change won't be official until September. PHILADELPHIA - The Wells Fargo Center signage was removed from the side of the South Philadelphia arena as it prepares to rebrand into the Xfinity Mobile Arena in September. The name change was announced in May, and comes after the Sixers ditched contentious plans to build an arena in Center City after striking a deal with Comcast. This will be the fifth time the arena has changed names since it opened in 1996 as CoreStates Center. The backstory The Wells Fargo Center will be renamed to the Xfinity Mobile Arena, Comcast Spectacore and Harris-Blitzer Sports and Entertainment announced in May. This name change will officially take place in September and the naming rights will last through the Sixers and Flyers 2030-2031 season, official said. This will be the fifth name change the arena has undergone since it first opened in 1996, known first as the Spectrum II and then officially as CoreStates Center. "This arena is an anchor in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex and broader region," Chairman & CEO of Comcast Spectacor Dan Hilferty previously said. Dig deeper The name change happened after the Sixers and Comcast struck a deal for the team to remain in South Philly, ending controversial plans for a Center City arena. The team had approval from Philadelphia City Council and the support of Mayor Cherelle Parker for "76 Place" that would have seen the Fashion District demolished. These plans caused fierce push back from locals, who feared that the 18,500 seat arena would uproot the Chinatown community.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley is emphatically setting the record straight regarding a persistent online rumor claiming he earns $2.88 million annually under a WWE ambassador contract. During a recent appearance on Casual Conversations with The Classic, Foley directly addressed and refuted these claims, clarifying his current relationship with WWE and his actual compensation. More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation Foley made it clear that such a lucrative ambassador role does not exist for him. "I don't have an ambassador job that pays me $2.88 million as has been reported," he stated. He further commented that when he previously held a formal ambassador position with the company, the financial terms were vastly different. "I had an ambassador job for two years that paid me literally 1/14th of that." The "Hardcore Legend" also pointed to his rigorous touring schedule as evidence against the rumored high-paying, less demanding role. "It's been rumored that I have this luxurious job. And I'm like, I don't think I'd be out on the road 200 days a year if I was making $2.88 million a year to be an ambassador," Foley reasoned. He expressed no ill will towards anyone who might have such a deal but wanted to clarify his own situation, saying, "If somebody else has that type of job, good on them." Foley affirmed his positive ongoing relationship with WWE, citing recent appearances like a signing at the Royal Rumble and an upcoming engagement at the new version of WWE Axxess. He explained that he is currently under a Legends deal, which he deeply appreciates. PHILADELPHIA, PA - JANUARY 30: Professional wrestler Mick Foley participates in Wing Bowl 23 on January 30, 2015 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania."And I have a Legends deal that—because WWE has seen fit to promote me as somebody of importance—is better than it was 20 years ago. Better than it was 10 years ago. So I'm really grateful for that relationship." However, he reiterated the core point about the ambassador rumor: "But I don't receive $2.88 million. I receive zero dollars, because I'm not an ambassador." Foley concluded by acknowledging his inherent connection to the company, regardless of official titles or contracts, stating, "Anywhere I walk, I'm kind of a walking billboard for WWE."
