Welsby hat-trick helps Saints thrash Giants
Betfred Super League Huddersfield (0) 4 Tries: Bibby St Helens (22) 46 Tries: Sailor 2, Sironen 2, Welsby 3, Murphy Goals: Whitby 7 St Helens continued their recent dominance over Huddersfield Giants with a 46-4 victory which eased the pressure on boss Paul Wellens. Jack Welsby scored a hat-trick, Tristan Sailor and Curtis Sironen grabbed two tries each and Lewis Murphy also got on the scoreboard on a stunning night for Saints. Jack Bibby scored the hosts' only points on a chastening night for the Giants. Saints have now won the past 12 meetings against the Giants and climb to fourth in Super League courtesy of a second win in a row. Victory for Saints means they have scored a cumulative 86 points over the course of their past two matches having thrashed Catalans 40-0 last week. Sailor got them going inside 10 minutes and the visitors never looked back. Welsby put in the assist for the try having combined with Jonny Lomax in the build-up. The Giants' tough start was compounded when Taane Milne was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul for denying Sironen a clear try. Moments later, Sironen got on the scoresheet and made them pay, touching down from Lomax's searching kick, while Welsby added the fourth on 26 minutes in similar fashion from Morgan Knowles' grubber kick. Lomax thought he added a fifth just before half time, but video referee Marcus Griffiths judged that he failed to ground Welsby's kick. and Saints frustration was exacerbated when Alex Walmsley was sent to the bin for a professional foul of his own. On his return, Walmsley put in an excellent defensive effort to hold up Tui Lolohea and soon after the visitors extended their lead when Sailor turned defence into attack to feed Welsby who raced clear. Huddersfield pulled a try back through Bibby but Saints denied them any more momentum minutes later when Murphy showed great hands to touch down after swift passing from Lomax and Welsby. Sironen added his second try of the night nine minutes from time, powering over from close range while Welsby rounded his night off with a third, while Murphy wrapped up an emphatic win with the visitors' eighth try of the evening. Saints go top with win at Wakefield
Betfred Super League Wakefield (6) 6 Try: Vagana Goal: Jowitt St Helens (14) 26 Tries: Welsby, Robertson, Clark, Feldt Goals: Percival 5 St Helens maintained their 100% record to return to the top of Super League with a hard-fought win at Wakefield. Saints had been at their free-scoring best in the first two rounds, piling up 128 points, but promoted Trinity proved stiffer opponents than Salford and Castleford to remain in the contest well into the second half. Tries from Jack Welsby and Harry Robertson - his fifth in three games - and a couple of Mark Percival penalties gave the visitors breathing space at half-time, although Isaiah Vagana struck to keep Trinity within sight. Saints weathered some Wakefield pressure early in the second half before easing away through tries from Daryl Clark and Kyle Feldt. Trinity have shown they can compete in Super League after romping through the Championship last season, by winning at Leeds on the opening day and then running title hopefuls Hull KR close last week. They matched Saints for possession, territory and work-rate here as well, but in the end the class of the away side's back line made the difference. Saints showed Trinity plenty of respect, opting to take the two points through Percival when presented with an early penalty in front of the posts. And they forged further ahead when Jon Bennison did well to keep the ball alive out wide, Curtis Sironen fortuitously toed it forward as he tried to pick it up and Welsby was quickest to the loose ball to touch down. Wakefield struck back as Robertson spilled the ball deep in his own half and from the resulting attack Vagana used his bulk to good effect to crash into a tackle and spin over the line. Robertson made amends shortly afterwards, picking up the loose ball after Tom Johnstone had juggled and dropped a pass, the 19-year-old Saints back keeping up his scintillating start to the season by running 70 metres to score. Percival struck another penalty late in the half, and that again looked a sound decision as Trinity mounted their best spell of the game after the break. Robertson showed his defensive prowess with a vital tackle that forced a knock-on from Corey Hall in a dangerous attacking position, and Saints broke the hosts' stern resistance after that point. Clark bagged his 100th career try after a sharp break by Tristan Sailor gave him a clear run at the posts, and Feldt brilliantly finished in the corner from Welsby's pass to make sure of the win. Wakefield: Jowitt; L. Walmsley, Pratt, Hall, Johnstone; Trueman, Lino; McMeeken, Hood, Hamlin-Uele, Vagana, Storton, Pitts Interchanges: Russell, Doyle, Atoni, Croft St Helens: Welsby; Feldt, Robertson, Percival, Bennison; Sailor, Lomax; A.
