Tigers shut out White Sox on combined 2-hitter
August 13 - Troy Melton and three relievers combined on a two-hit shutout and Wenceel Perez contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly to help the Detroit Tigers defeat the host Chicago White Sox 1-0 on Wednesday. White Sox pitching limited the Tigers to just five hits, but Detroit capitalized to earn a three-game series victory. Will Vest notched his 18th save with a perfect ninth. Sawyer Gipson-Long and Kyle Finnegan were the bridge between Melton, with Finnegan issuing Detroit's lone walk. Melton and fellow rookie right-hander Shane Smith of Chicago dueled for the first five innings. Smith scattered two hits and three walks with five strikeouts without walking a batter while throwing 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes. Melton (3-1) yielded just one hit and struck out six against zero walks, throwing strikes on 43 of 56 pitches. Smith worked around two-out singles in each of the first two innings as well as walks in the third, fourth and fifth but kept the Tigers off the scoreboard. Melton matched his effectiveness to set a brisk pace. Starting for the first time since July 28 against Arizona, he retired the first 12 batters he faced, including three by strikeout. Luis Robert Jr. spoiled the run when he doubled to lead off the fifth, but Melton recovered, escaping trouble with swinging strikeouts of Andrew Benintendi, Miguel Vargas and Edgar Quero. Detroit broke through against White Sox reliever Martin Perez in the sixth. After loading the bases on a single, double and walk, the Tigers got on the board when Wenceel Perez hit an RBI sacrifice fly to the warning track in left-center. Kerry Carpenter, who scored the lone run, had two hits for Detroit. Martin Perez (1-2) took the loss, allowing one run and three hits in 3 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four. The game was played in 2 hours, 19 minutes. That came on the heels of Tuesday's 9-6 Chicago victory, which took 3 hours, 23 minutes and marked Detroit's longest nine-inning game since the pitch clock was initiated in 2023. Detroit won for the seventh time in 10 meetings with Chicago to clinch the season series. The White Sox fell to 9-27 in one-run games. --Field Level Media

Tigers' Wenceel Perez exits Saturday's game vs. Angels
Tigers' Wenceel Perez exits Saturday's game vs. Angels originally appeared on The Sporting News Detroit Tigers' starting outfielder Wenceel Perez was removed from Saturday's game vs. the Los Angeles Angels after the fourth inning, Evan Woodbery reported. Perez fouled a pitch off his right leg in the second frame before hitting a triple, but he looked 'like he was running a bit stiffly' when he singled in his next at-bat. Zach McKinstry entered the game at shortstop and Javier Baez moved to center field in the fifth. The Tigers would end up losing to the Angels, 7-4, at Comerica Park. The game was tied at 4-4 when Detroit removed Perez, who scored the Tigers' first run after Andy Ibanez's RBI single brought him home from third in the second inning. While Detroit has struggled over the past few weeks—seeing their 15-game lead in the AL Central shrink to six entering Saturday's game—Perez has excelled over his last ten games since July 29. During that span, he's hitting .424 (14-for-33) with six extra-base hits (two home runs) and three stolen bases. The Tigers need that type of production down the stretch with the Cleveland Guardians breathing down their necks. Perez has already spent time on the injured list this year due to lumbar spine inflammation and didn't make his season debut until May 27. Detroit will hope his injury this time around isn't nearly that serious. The 25-year-old signed with the Tigers as an international free agent in 2016 and made his Major League debut in 2024. Perez has drastically improved in several categories from his rookie year, hitting .267/.321/.492 with 9 homers and 25 RBI over 58 games in 2025.

Detroit Tigers offense slumbers again in 4-1 loss to Rangers as skid hits six games
ARLINGTON, TX — The first hit occurred with two outs in the sixth inning. Texas Rangers right-hander Kumar Rocker was no-hitting the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, July 19, until Wenceel Pérez saved them from being on the wrong side of history, hitting a two-strike cutter to right field for a single. The Tigers still lost, 4-1. The Tigers (59-40) have lost six games in a row, including back-to-back matchups against the Rangers at Globe Life Field. The offense hadn't scored a run since the seventh inning Sunday, July 13 – before the All-Star break – until Riley Greene snapped a 19-inning scoreless streak with a solo home run in the ninth inning. Before this losing streak, the Tigers hadn't dropped more than three games in a row, doing so three times. They've now lost two series in a row, for the first time all season. SATURDAY'S NOTEBOOK: Gleyber Torres responds to Tigers' losing streak: 'It's part of the season' Celebrate 125 epic seasons of the Tigers with our new book! In Saturday's loss, the Tigers were limited to three hits and four walks. The three walks: Gleyber Torres in the first inning, Torres in the fourth, Pérez in the fourth and Jake Rogers in the seventh. The back-to-back walks from Torres and Pérez opened the fourth inning, but the next three batters were retired to strand the runners: Greene (flyout), Spencer Torkelson (strikeout) and Zach McKinstry (groundout). In the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Matt Vierling delivered the second hit for the Tigers — a two-out single off left-handed reliever Hoby Milner's full-count changeup below the strike zone. After the single, Rogers drew a walk to put a runner into scoring position, but pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones struck out swinging to end the inning. Greene saved the Tigers from getting shut out for the second game in a row, crushing right-handed reliever Jacob Webb's first-pitch changeup for a solo home run in the ninth inning. It was his 25th homer in 97 games. The 25-year-old entered Saturday's start with a 68.2% strike rate in his first 13 games (seven starts) in the 2025 season, but he failed to throw strikes against the Rangers. In the second inning, Rowdy Tellez hit a three-run home run off Montero's fastball in a 3-0 count — giving the Rangers a 3-0 lead. Before the homer, Adolis García hit a single and Evan Carter drew a walk. OFFICIAL: Tigers sign top two 2025 MLB Draft picks, save $850K to use on other picks A single and a walk in the fifth inning led to Corey Seager's RBI single off Montero's slider, extending the Rangers' lead to 4-0. The single from Seager chased Montero. Montero owns a 4.28 ERA. Kumar Rocker stars for Rangers For the Rangers, Rocker completed 6⅓ scoreless innings on one hit and three walks with five strikeouts. It was the second scoreless start of his 15-start MLB career — and his first scoreless start of more than five innings. The Rangers selected Rocker with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. He has a 5.66 ERA in 12 starts in 2025. In Saturday's game, Rocker retired eight batters in a row before Pérez snapped his no-hit bid. A mound visit from Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux helped him lock in after the back-to-back walks in the fourth inning. Rocker threw 96 pitches.
