India's EV charging infra grew 5 times in last 3 years, but still only 1 public charging station for every 235 EVs

New Delhi: India's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is growing rapidly, with the number of public EV charging stations registering a five-fold increase from FY22 to early FY25, according to a report by CareEdge Ratings . The report stated that public EV charging stations (EVPCS) have grown significantly from just 5,151 in CY22 to 11,903 in CY23, and further to 25,202 by the end of FY24, reaching 26,367 in early FY25. The report stated the rapid growth has been led by strong initiatives from the central and state governments. The Indian government has significantly stepped up efforts to boost public charging infrastructure across the country. Live Events Several state-level EV policies are also playing an important role by attracting both public and private investments into the sector. The report noted that this growth reflects the government's strong commitment to encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles in the country. Additionally, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for battery manufacturing, along with duty exemptions on key minerals, is expected to reduce India's import dependency by up to 20 per cent by FY27. This is likely to make EVs more affordable and help lower the overall cost of ownership. However, the report also pointed out a gap between the growth of EVs and the charging infrastructure. Currently, India has just one public charging station for every 235 electric vehicles on the road. It said, "With only 26,367 public EV charging stations available, India currently has around one charger for every 235 EVs on the road." This highlighted the need for continued and faster development of EV charging stations to keep pace with the increasing number of electric vehicles being sold in the country. Overall, while the EV charging network in India is expanding quickly, there is still a need for more balanced growth to fully support the transition to electric mobility.

Two more zones privatise waste collection

Chennai: Solid waste collection in two more zones — Tondiarpet and Anna Nagar — will soon be privatised, said Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), citing complaints of open dumping, poor garbage handling, and irregular waste collection in these areas. With this, waste-handling in 14 of 15 zones in the city will be done by private parties, Ambattur being the exception. According to officials, the contractor will be selected through tenders and evaluated based on 43 key parameters. These include door-to-door collection, street sweeping (both manual and machine-based), transporting waste from bins, clearing garbage hotspots, cleaning canals and riverbanks, removing animal carcasses, and special cleaning in slum areas and burial grounds. Contractors will also need to maintain litter-free roads and conduct mass cleaning drives. A recent study submitted to GCC pointed out several challenges in Tondiarpet and Anna Nagar. These include high population density, mixed land use, industrial waste, narrow streets, and lack of space to place garbage bins. "Garbage collection was irregular here. Privatised zones are doing better, and it's high time the same model is followed in our proximity as well," said S Manickam, a resident of Tondiarpet. GCC will pay the contractor 50% of the project cost upfront. The remaining 50% will be paid based on performance. Officials say similar models in other zones reduced waste management expenses by 20%-30%. Once this move is implemented, only the Ambattur zone will remain under GCC control, while the other 14 zones will be under private management. Deputy mayor M Mahesh Kumar said private contractors are paid based on the amount of waste removed, which has led to better results in those zones. "We noticed a performance gap between GCC-managed and outsourced zones," he said. Current conservancy workers will not lose their jobs. Instead, they will be redeployed as school security staff or other corporation roles. "Most conservancy workers are too old. They do not show up on a regular basis and have no timeline for waste collection. It is appreciated that the corporation is finally privatising the conservancy workers, " said secretary of federation of Anna Nagar Association, V Sandhya.

Buried 100 years ago, HR&CE unearths temple near Trichy

Trichy: Restoration work is underway on a temple that lay buried for nearly a century in Vidathilampatti village near Manapparai, Trichy, officials from the Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR&CE) department said. The Pattatharasi Amman Temple is being excavated with an initial grant of ₹2 lakh from the Village Temple Renovation Fund. As the work progressed and the structure was found to be largely intact, the department sought an additional ₹30 lakh for further restoration. Located near the Mamundi River, the temple was buried over time after debris from canal construction was dumped around it nearly 100 years ago. A major flood in 1977 submerged the structure further, leaving only the moolavar gopuram visible above ground, said Manapparai HR&CE inspector Vinoth. Excavation began after a report was submitted and funds were cleared. A poclain excavator unearthed the main shrine, which measures 7 feet in width and 10 feet in height. Idols and tridents believed to be original to the temple were found in the sanctum. Additional funds have been requested to clear the remaining mounds of earth and to build a retaining wall. "We've also sought the help of the state archaeology department to learn more about the temple's history," the official added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like I'm closing my shop! "Villagers had been demanding its revival. Elders recall visiting the temple in their youth," said Manapparai municipal chairman Geetha A Michael Raj. The proposal was submitted alongside that of the nearby Kali Thirtha Eswaran Temple. However, officials acknowledged that poor road connectivity to the site remains a challenge. "We will ensure better access to the temple," the chairman said. Villagers, meanwhile, are celebrating the rediscovery. "It's a long-standing demand. People have already started gathering daily to light lamps," said E Manoharan, a village head. "Elders in my family regard this as our ancestral deity and believe the temple is over 100 years old.".
