"Old People" Habits Young People Admit To Doing
Whether it's complaining about loud music or getting excited about taking a trip to Costco, we all have a thing we do that we normally would only associate with "old people" doing or loving. But of course, the reality is you don't have to be collecting Social Security to start acting like a retiree. Recently, I stumbled upon this Reddit thread from several years ago, where user Jehovanoid wanted to know about those inner elderly habits young people have when they asked: "What 'old person' things do you do?" The thread went viral, getting 16K comments. Below are the top and most often repeated "old people" things young folks are totally guilty of doing: "I look up words on Urban Dictionary so I can try to understand words kids use." —OkayestSkier "My husband looked at me the other day and asked if I was ready to go to was 5:30 p.m." —None "Go grocery shopping early in the morning. Old people know what is up on that front. No lines. There and back home in 30 minutes." —gudjuju "I'm 47 and noticed the old age stuff happening a few years ago. Early to bed, less jeans and more comfy pants, tea instead of coffee, hold my books farther away, and love when plans cancel and I can stay home." —willow0281 "Ask my wife to turn off the lights when we're not in the room because: 'I don't own stock in the electric company.'" —CapAmericaJr "I eat like an old person. I love Grape Nuts cereal, green bean casserole, Werther's Original, Cream of Wheat, corned beef hash, and especially butter pecan ice cream. I've been known to order meatloaf at restaurants." —twocopperjack "Complain when people come over after 7 p.m." —letshaveadeepconvo "I left work early so I could open up my new vacuum that was delivered today. I'm super excited to vacuum my whole house. Maybe when I'm done, I'll put plastic on the couch and plastic runners on the floor to keep the house more tidy." —cls107 "I got angry at some kids running across my front yard last Halloween. I was THIS close to literally yelling, 'Get off my lawn!' before I stopped myself. I'm 34." —MidvalleyFreak "Make old man noises when I get off the couch, declare my hip hurts at least 70 times a day, and lose my glasses on my head. The list goes on, really." —AllyBrat69 "Type with one finger on my phone." —firegaming3 "I love to tell and retell boring, long-winded stories that go off on several tangents before I get to any real point. Stay tuned, though, because the next time we meet, I'm going to retell them again. :)" —llcucf80 "I am prompt. Aggressively so. If you tell me to be at your house at 7:00, you best believe I'm knocking on your door before the clock hits 7:01. Fuck this 'fashionably late' or 'just get here whenever' shit. I didn't ask what time you want to meet up to secretly gauge how cool you are, I'm trying to make a plan, damn it." —WatchTheBoom "Almost 30. I don't know who the fuck famous people are these days. :/" —mamamoonzz "I say, 'Now why the heck did they change that?'" —penelopiecruise "Schedule nice dinners out with friends at 5 p.m. They complain about it all the time because we're not old enough (25–33) to eat that early, but I work days, and I don't like people. I just want to eat at a time when the restaurant isn't packed, and I'll get my food in a reasonable amount of time." —CaptainBeverlyPicard "I'm 24 and I arrive at work an hour ahead of time to beat the traffic. There's one other guy who does that, and he's been with the company for 46 years. We just chill in the break room until it's time to report for duty." —MountainDude95 "Read the 'letters to the editor' section of newspapers whenever I'm grumpy, just to grumble arguments to myself if I disagree with them." —AnAverageCanuck "Never miss Jeopardy!" —goofylookalike "I get excited over buying household items. Just got a new washer/dryer. I'm stoked to do a load of laundry and see that baby go." —super_techno_funk "I tie and untie my shoes every time I take them off and put them back on. Shoes are expensive, I'm not wrecking the heel to save a few seconds." —rusticnacho And lastly, "Check the obituaries in the paper every morning to be sure I am not listed. I am 81." —awaywego000 You can read the original thread on Reddit.

The Country That Exports The Most Candy Is Smaller Than Montana
Candy is a beloved and widely popular treat in nearly every part of the world, but some countries contribute far more sugary confections to the global market than others. Germany is the country that exports the most candy by a significant margin. In 2023, Germany exported over $2 billion worth of sugar confectionery, followed by China at just shy of $1.5 billion and Mexico rounding out the top three at nearly $1.1 billion, according to data from the World Bank. Interestingly, China exported slightly more candy by weight (467.5 million kilograms) than Germany, which exported 428.5 million kilograms. However, when it comes to dollar value, Germany is the clear winner, accounting for nearly 13% of total global candy exports in 2022, according to research from Tendata. Candy might not be the first culinary delight that comes to mind when you think of Germany (perhaps that would be Oktoberfest beer or Volkswagen's bestselling sausages), but the country is home to several of the world's largest candy manufacturers, including Haribo and Storck, the company behind Werther's Original. Quite impressive for a country smaller than Montana and three other U.S. states. Read more: 6 Nuts To Stop Eating And 8 To Choose Instead It may seem surprising that a country nearly 28 times smaller than the United States exports such an impressive quantity of candy, but it turns out Germany's exporting power extends far beyond sugar confectionery. Although Germany is hardly a giant when it comes to size, it's the world's third-largest exporter of goods and services behind only China and the United States, according to the World Population Review. Germany's principal exports are motor vehicles, chemicals, and machinery. In fact, the World Population Review reports that Germany was also the top exporter of cars by value in 2023, but we still think the country's domination of the international candy market is more impressive. Oh, and in case you were wondering where all that candy is going, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), the United States is the top destination for Germany's candy exports, receiving $290 million worth of gummies, caramels, and other sugary treats in 2023. Germany exports plenty of candy to other parts of the world, but Germans also have an impressive sweet tooth in their own right. Statista found that Germans consume nearly 29 pounds of candy per capita annually, more than any other country. Some favorites include Haribo gummies (which we've ranked from worst to best), marzipan, and caramels like Toffifee, Riesen, and Werther's Original. More women are working in deathcare, funeral industry
Lanae Strovers didn't plan to work in deathcare until she lost a close friend and his funeral didn't reflect who he was. The big picture: More women like Strovers are entering the historically male-dominated funeral industry. Context: In the 18th and 19th centuries, women played major roles in deathcare, including watching over the dying and laying out their bodies. But that shifted when embalming became the norm and deathcare became a more formalized practice, which women were excluded from. Flashback: When Strovers' close friend died in a single-car accident in 2007, it took three months for his remains to be identified. When the funeral finally happened, "it just felt like we were at the wrong place," she tells Axios. Nothing reflected the vibrancy of her friend, who was a Des Moines hairdresser. That night, after a couple of glasses of wine, she Googled "how to become a funeral director" and applied to DMACC's mortuary science program. She woke up to an acceptance email. State of play: There's a dated perception that funeral directors are "old white men," but these days, women are outpacing men in mortuary science enrollment, according to the National Funeral Directors Association. In 2007, 40% of students enrolling in mortuary science programs were women and 60% were men. In 2019, 72% of enrollees were women and 28% were men. What they're saying: The funeral industry is shifting from traditional services to more personalization, Strovers says. It can be as simple as putting out a bowl of grandma's Werther's Original candy or as complicated as designing a funeral to appear like a runway show. People are also more open to talking about grief and mental health in recent years, Strovers says. Yes, but: The industry doesn't have the highest pay, she says. In Iowa, a person with a degree in mortuary science earns an average of $62,138, according to DMACC. But entry pay is lower, typically around $35,000, she says. The bottom line: "Society as a whole has been so much better about mental health and talking about their feelings, and we're doing so much more aftercare," Strovers says. "Once the family is done with the service, we're not done serving them."
