Calcutta HC stays payouts to sacked group-C, D staff
The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the West Bengal government not to pay monthly allowance to the Group-C and Group-D categories of employees, who lost their jobs following a Supreme Court verdict in April, along with the SSC teachers. Recently, the Trinamool government announced a monthly allowance of Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,00 for Group-C and Group-D categories respectively under a new scheme 'West Bengal Livelihood and Social Security Interim Scheme, 2025' early this month. Justice Amrita Sinha , who was hearing the case today, asked the state's Advocate General Kishore Dutta, whether the Group-C and D employees, who will get the allowance under the 'West Bengal Livelihood and Social Security Interim Scheme, 2025' will do some work or will get the allowance, sitting at home. Dutta, however, stated the matter included in the scheme. "This money is allocated from a special fund, Dutta added. Justice Sinha asked on what basis the allowance was determined and how many employees will get this money? In which cases was such financial assistance given in the past?"

Cabinet nod for scheme to aid sacked Group C & D staffers
Kolkata: The state cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod to the West Bengal Livelihood and Social Security Interim Scheme , which seeks to give sacked group C and group D employees monthly grants, CM Mamata Banerjee this, Group C and D employees will receive a grant of Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively from April 1, 2025, until the Supreme Court decides on Bengal govt's review petition against the apex court's order terminating the employment of 25,752 school staffers. "The disbursement will start now. Many might not want the money, but that is their personal choice. When the chief secretary had a meeting with them (candidates), I had made this announcement; and from today, it has been implemented," Banerjee told reporters. The CM said: "Group C and D employees were not getting their salaries and were facing problems in running their households. The (SSC) case is sub judice and pending in court. We have filed a review petition. Whatever the court decides, we will abide by it. But since these people are facing financial distress, we made an announcement a few days ago that we are launching a scheme. We launched the scheme because there are PILs filed at every step... With the permission of the cabinet and under the labour department, we have launched the West Bengal Livelihood and Social Security Interim Scheme."Koushik Ranjan Mandal, one of the school staffers whose employment was terminated, said he felt relieved but wanted his job back. "Allowance is not the solution. I appreciate this move by the CM. However, it's still an announcement, we want to see the concrete result of it. State govt should take a positive step to bring back our jobs," he said.
