Field rallies to stun West Branch in district final
MASSILLON, Ohio (WKBN) – Field plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun West Branch 5-4 in the Division IV Softball District Championship game on Saturday at Massillon Washington High School. Lilli Sutkowy delivered the game-winning RBI single to seal up the victory for the Falcons, capping off a 3-run seventh inning. The Warriors were seeking their first district championship since 2021. Addi Craven opened the scoring for West Branch in the second inning with a 2-run home run. Tia Ulrich added an RBI single in the fourth inning, giving West Branch a 3-2 advantage after four innings. Craven delivered her second RBI in the fifth inning on a groundout, increasing the lead to 4-2. With the loss, West Branch ends the season at 19-8 overall. Field improves to 22-7 on the season. West Branch moving on from 8-time conference champion head coach
BELOIT, Ohio (WKBN) – Veteran girls basketball coach Walt DeShields has been informed that he will not return as the head coach at West Branch High School. According to a source, Coach DeShields was told the district is 'moving in a different direction.' During his 20 years leading the Warriors' program, DeShields led West Branch to 379 victories, as well as eight league titles, 17 sectional championships, seven district titles, and a pair of regional titles. In addition, DeShields led West Branch to the State Final Four in both 2015 and 2020, which was cut short due to COVID. He was recently named the Eastern Buckeye Conference Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, as well as the Northeast Inland District Coach of the Year. DeShields earned the prestigious Sportsmanship, Ethics & Integrity Award from the OHSAA in 2024, along with the Bob Arzen Award for 20 or more consecutive years at the same school. Canfield's back in the regional round

First-year head coach Andy Vlajkovich has guided his Cardinal bunch back to the Sweet 16 where they'll be matched with Warrensville Heights. The winner will play either Buchtel or Glenville at 4 p.m. Saturday. Canfield captures back-to-back district championships
NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) – Canfield boys basketball downs West Branch 35-38, to win the Cardinals' second consecutive OHSAA Division IV District Championship at North Ridgeville High School, Saturday afternoon. Watch above for extended championship game highlights and interviews with Cardinals' coaches and players. 'I think this was the expectation was to get here. It was certainly a lot harder than we thought, I think West French is a heck of an opponent,' said Canfield head coach Andy Vlajkovich. 'They were really physical today, they scouted us well. I think the difference was just the mental toughness in that locker room.' Canfield's Landon Shina scored a game-high 12 points in the championship victory. 'It means everything to win the championship, but that's two in a row and we want to keep it moving forward,' said Canfield junior Landon Shina. 'We came short last year in the regional finals and we want to keep it moving forward and take another step.' Also, the Cardinal's Jake DeLisio scored six and Ben Weaver and Drew Shapiro each posted five in the win. West Branch's Cooper Anderson scored a team-high 11 points in the loss. He was backed up by Gavin Gregory with eight and Joey Jackson with five points. West Branch ends the season with an overall record of (13-12). Canfield advances to (21-4). This is Cardinal's head coach Andy Vlajkovich's first district title as a head coach. He previously was an assistant with Canfield for last seasons title run. West Branch coach celebrates rivalry win in district semifinals
