Roberts' West Brom goal 'most important of career'

Haydon Roberts says he does not think he has scored a "more important" goal in his career after his 96th-minute strike gave Bristol City a 2-1 win against play-off rivals West victory lifted the Robins up to fifth in the Championship with five games 22-year-old, who came on as a substitute in the 75th minute, latched onto a Rob Dickie pass into the box and slotted the ball through the legs of Baggies keeper Josh Griffiths."I've scored better goals than that but it's probably the most important goal I've scored in my career. I enjoyed every part of it, I can't even remember how it went in," Roberts told BBC Radio Bristol. Roberts, who typically plays at left-back or the left side of midfield, joined Bristol City in June 2023 from Brighton and has made 54 appearances for the club, including 26 this season so goal was his first at home and only his second for the club, with his first coming away at Norwich in April last year."I owe my team-mates, I owe everyone a goal really. It's been nearly over a year," Roberts said."I don't think my performances have been too great but I'm just happy that I can give this moment to everyone at the club."Roberts, who has also played at Derby, added that the team know they could create something "special" this season, with the club not finishing in the play-offs since the 2007-08 campaign."There is something really special that we can create, you saw the celebrations after the goal, after the full-time whistle," Roberts said."There's such a connection between the players and staff and the supporters, I haven't experienced anything like that in my career so far."The boys and the staff have done well just to approach every game step-by-step. It's cliche but that's how we've been taking it and that's a massive strength of ours. "We're not stupid, we know the situation we're in, what we can create this season - it's exciting."

The 24-year-old had to come off before half-time at The Hawthorns and will have surgery on Thursday. Talking to BBC Radio Sheffield after the win at Swansea on Wednesday, boss Danny Rohl said: "It's a big one, he's out for around six months. "It's a setback for him and for us as a group because he helps us a lot." The Owls are eighth in the Championship, two points off the play-off places.
