‘A Pink Affair' marks SA Council for Business Women's launch

On July 29, the South African Council for Business Women (SACBW) officially launched its newest branch in the West Rand during a celebratory event titled A Pink Affair, held at Samesyn Coffee Shop in Rant-en-Dal. According to the West Rand branch leader, Dr Lurine van Zyl, the establishment of the West Rand branch has played a pivotal role in strengthening the organisation's position as one of the most proactive and preferred network marketing platforms in South Africa. 'This strategic expansion has notably contributed to broadening our national footprint, empowering women entrepreneurs across the country. By establishing a strong presence in the West Rand, we continue to foster growth, collaboration, and opportunities for women to thrive in the entrepreneurial space,' Lurine said. The morning was filled with energy, inspiration and purpose as members and guests gathered to witness the official founding. The launch featured a line-up of speakers who each brought valuable insights to the occasion. Hanlie Delport, Honorary Life Member of SACBW, opened the event with a message of encouragement, emphasising the organisation's commitment to empowering women in business throughout South Africa. Lurine also shared her goals for building a strong and collaborative local network, as well as her vision for the impact she hopes the branch will have in the region. Guest speaker Jacqui Shawe then delivered an engaging talk on the role of fashion in everyday life, linking personal style to identity, confidence, and how it can serve as a tool to align with one's professional and personal goals. Cheyna Ross, one of their Gauteng Regional Business Leaders, chaired the formalities of the meeting and addressed attendees on the operational dynamics of managing a successful SACBW branch. She then declared the branch officially established. More fantastic news was shared, such as the SACBW Gauteng Summit on August 20, which promises to be an inspiring event with over 100 women in business coming together. Don't miss out, secure your tickets now on the SACBW website and be part of this empowering gathering, or send an email to [email protected]. Lastly, are you seeking a supportive community where empowerment, friendship, and growth flourish? They invite you to become part of the sisterhood, a space dedicated to uplifting each other and making a positive impact. 'Together, we can also support you in establishing a thriving branch in your area if you're not near one of our existing locations. Starting your own sisterhood branch is an empowering journey filled with opportunities to connect, inspire, and lead.' For more information, send an email to [email protected].

67 Blankets' KnitWits bring joy to cancer patients

In celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, members of the West Rand's 67 Blankets initiative gathered at Life Flora's Oncology Centre to spread warmth and love to patients undergoing cancer treatment. The group, known as KnitWits, distributed handmade blankets and scarves, each bearing a special message that reads, 'I am not lost. If you are cold and need me, please take me. With love, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day'. The blankets and scarves were placed at the waiting area, and inside the treatment room, giving patients an opportunity to pick any colour that fascinates them. The event was part of the initiative's annual Secret Scarf Mission, which aims to bring joy and warmth to those in need. Founder Carolyn Steyn of 67 Blankets said, 'The 10th anniversary of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day is a truly remarkable milestone. I could never have imagined the incredible momentum our Secret Scarves initiative would gain over the years. 'Over the past decade, our KnitWits have lovingly crafted and distributed thousands of scarves, each one a thread of hope and warmth for someone in need. This campaign has not only warmed bodies but also hearts, making a profound difference in communities across South Africa and inspiring a movement of kindness that continues to grow,' she said. The patients appreciated the scarves and blankets, and had big smiles on their faces.

The Lead: Streets of sewage and a ray of light in Krugersdorp, with Sikonathi Mantshantsha

In 2024, News24's Waste Land exposé uncovered the source of the Gauteng West Rand's unbearable smell: the old Percy Stewart Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was illegally dumping untreated, heavily polluted water into the Blougatspruit, which feeds into the Hartbeespoort Dam downstream. This raw sewage, seeping into crucial water sources, farms and homes, threatened the livelihoods of everyone around these crucial river conduits. After News24's reporting and Mogale City pumping millions of rands into its resuscitation, many of the problems have been solved. However, as investigative journalist Sikonathi Mantshantsha reports the daily reality in the nearby Kagiso township remains grim as the residents live with streams of human excrement outside their front doors. Later in the show, we cross to the News24 Sports desk for editor Lloyd Burnard's take on the Proteas challenge for the ICC World Test Championship against the Aussies at Lord's. We also explore which of the cheapest cars in South Africa are not produced in China or India. Listen on YouTube: Listen on Apple Podcasts:
