Seattle police chief was reportedly having lunch as $2M jewelry store robbery happened just yards away

The chief of the Seattle Police Department was reportedly just yards away from a jewelry store when it was ransacked in broad daylight on Thursday, with the robbers getting away with an estimated $2 million in diamonds, gold and luxury watches. That day, four masked robbers executed the robbery at Menashe & Sons Jewelers in West Seattle, threatening staffers with bear spray and a stun gun after smashing the locked glass front door with a hammer and stealing everything from six display cases in the store. But as the jewelry heist was taking place, Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes was eating lunch just yards away, a police source told The Jason Rantz Show on Seattle Red 770 AM. A spokesperson for the Seattle Police Department confirmed to The Jason Rantz Show that the chief was nearby, but couldn't say specifically where he was at the time of the robbery. "Chief Barnes and his security detail were at a nearby business when the robbery occurred," the spokesperson said. "They were inside the business and were unaware of the crime unfolding. "The suspects were in and out of the jewelry store in exactly 90 seconds," the spokesperson added. "His security detail was in plain clothes at the time of the robbery." The department spokesperson also told the radio show the chief and his detail became aware of the robbery after police vehicles with lights and sirens responded to the scene. Thieves smashed open a case with an emerald necklace worth $125,000 and a case containing around $750,000 worth of Rolex watches, police said. "We're pretty shook up as a staff," Josh Menashe, vice president of the family-owned store, said on Friday. "We're gonna be closed for a while." Matthew Strommen, the manager of nearby Industrious Gym told FOX 13 in Seattle the employees of the jewelry store escaped out the back and went to the gym for help. He added that there was "a lot of shock and surprise" because of the robbery, leading to the gym locking the doors until police arrived. The suspects escaped in a getaway car before police arrived at noon. No arrests have been made yet. No one was hurt during the robbery. Seattle police are asking anyone with information to call 206-233-5000.

Masked robbers pull off brazen midday heist at Seattle jewelry store in under two minutes

Four masked robbers executed a brazen midday robbery at a jewelry store in West Seattle on Thursday, leaving with diamonds, gold and luxury watches in less than two minutes that was caught on surveillance video. The thieves threatened the store's staff at Menashe & Sons Jewelers with bear spray and a stun gun after smashing the locked glass front door with a hammer and stealing everything from six display cases in the store. "We're pretty shook up as a staff," Josh Menashe, vice president of the family-owned store, said on Friday. "We're gonna be closed for a while." The displays held an emerald necklace worth $125,000 and around $750,000 worth in Rolex watches, police said. Menashe said the employees were beginning to do a full inventory of the losses after cleaning up the glass. The manager of nearby Industrious Gym said the employees escaped out the back and went to his gym for help. "They came in telling us to call 911," Matthew Strommen told FOX 13. "I was about to start a class. We were like gearing up, ready to go, and then people come in yelling." "I think there was a lot of shock and surprise. I think they heard the smashing glass and thought the worst and took off out the back," said Strommen. "We locked up our doors and had everyone in there until the police showed up." He added, "It was like 11:50 am., I don't think anyone was expecting something like that to happen in the middle of their workday." The suspects escaped in a getaway car before police arrived at noon and no arrests have been made yet. No one was hurt during the robbery. Seattle police are asking anyone with information to call 206-233-5000.

Gone in 90 seconds: Jewelry store loses $2m of diamonds, watches and gold in smash-and-grab attack

A band of thieves stole $2 million in jewelry from a Seattle store in a smash-and-grab robbery that took just 90 seconds, police say. The heist carried out in broad daylight. At around noon Thursday, four masked suspects used hammers to break the locked front glass door of Menashe & Sons Jewelers in West Seattle, the Seattle Police Department said. Inside the store, the group smashed six glass display cases and took $2 million worth of jewelry, diamonds, and luxury watches, according to police. One of the display cases held between $700,000 and $800,000 in Rolex watches. Another housed an emerald necklace — valued at $125,000 — and a platinum diamond, authorities said. Two other display cases contained 'a large amount of gold jewelry,' police said. During their minute-and-a-half inside the store, one suspect pointed bear spray and a taser at jewelry store employees as the three others carried out the robbery, police said. Neither the victims or witnesses reported any injuries. 'We're pretty shook up as a staff,' Josh Menashe, vice president of the store, told the Associated Press. 'We're gonna be closed for a while.' The store will be closed until August 19 to repair the damage. 'We are deeply thankful for the outpouring of support from the West Seattle community and from all those who have reached out with kind words and encouragement,' the store's statement read. 'We look forward to welcoming you back soon — stronger than ever.' Security footage, obtained by AP, captured the four suspects, all sporting hoodies, breaking into the store, shattering the display cases with hammers, and then stuffing the valuables into black bags. An employee in a gray suit approaches the suspects at one point before throwing his hands in the air after one of the suspects points an object at him. After the brisk burglary, the group fled in a 'getaway car' before officers arrived at the scene, authorities said. Officers searched the area, but didn't find the suspects. They remain at large and the investigation is ongoing. Police urge anyone with information to call the Seattle Police Department's Violent Crimes Tip Line.

Thieves steal $2 million in jewelry from Seattle store in just 90 seconds

A group of thieves stole millions of dollars of merchandise from a family-owned jewelry store in a bold daylight robbery in Seattle that took only 90 seconds, police said. The Seattle Police Department said it responded to reports of a robbery at Menashe and Sons Jeweler in West Seattle around noon on August 14. Four masked suspects allegedly used hammers to smash a locked front glass door, then destroyed six display cases, police said. The incident was caught on surveillance cameras inside the store, CBS affiliate KIRO reported. Police said the suspects were armed with a Taser and bear spray. The weapons were pointed at store employees while the robbery occurred. No injuries were reported. Bret Gibson, an employee at a gym across the street from the shop, told KIRO that the robbery could be heard inside his workplace. "You could still hear like a lot of breaking glass and banging around and stuff, so they were in there around noon still robbing the store while everyone was on the phone calling the cops," Gibson told KIRO. After the rapid-fire robbery, the suspects fled in a getaway car, police said. A search of the area yielded no results. Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact the Seattle Police Department at its Violent Crimes Tip Line. Josh Menashe, the vice president of the store, told the Associated Press that the store will "be closed for a while." "We're pretty shook up as a staff," he said. Menashe told the Associated Press that workers cleaned up the broken glass from the incident and were working on a full inventory of the stolen goods. One glass case held between $700,000 and $800,000 in Rolex luxury watches, while another held an emerald necklace valued at $125,000, the Seattle police said. The case with the necklace also held a platinum diamond. Two other display cases "contained a large amount of gold jewelry."
