Most of the western slope's showers now behind us for the week
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Showers were abundant last night, and it seems to be the last big chance for rain for the week. As you're heading out the door today, there is about a 20 percent chance of showers for the Grand Valley, but definitely nothing compared to the 60 percent chances the western slope was seeing yesterday. Today, temperatures will reach the low seventies. Tonight, expect conditions to clear slowly with temperatures hitting the mid to upper forties A warming trend begins today with high temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal moving in for the weekend. Afternoon showers and storms develop each afternoon through the weekend, mainly over the higher terrain. The low pressure system responsible for our recent stretch of active weather moves onto the Great Plains today, but not before delivering one last day of scattered showers and storms with wrap-around flow and moisture lingering across the region. Aside from a slight amount of rainfall near the Colorado/Utah state line this morning, there will be a lack of organized forcing to initiate convection, so today`s precipitation will be primarily driven by daytime heating. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will favor the high terrain but may move into adjacent valleys as well. Lightning and gusty outflow winds are the main threats of any thunderstorms that get going. Otherwise, pockets of light to moderate rainfall round out today`s impacts. Overall, expect some chances for showers today around the Grand Valley, but nothing like yesterday! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. CPW begins invasive species sampling in Colorado River
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Colorado Parks and Wildlife has started invasive species sampling on the Colorado River, a year after zebra mussel veligers were discovered in the water. CPW began aquatic nuisance species (ANS) sampling efforts which consist of shoreline and water samplings conducted weekly along the river between Glenwood Springs and the Colorado-Utah border. CPW said ANS technicians will use different techniques to survey for invasive mussels by targeting a different life stage of the pieces. Plankton tows utilize a fine mesh net to filter plankton from the water in slower-flowing areas of the river. These samples are then sent to the ANS lab in Denver where they are evaluated by using cross-polarized light microscopy for the possible presence of mussel veligers, according to CPW. ANS technicians also conduct shoreline surveys by examining rocks and other hard surfaces where zebra mussels might be. CPW ANS technicians, wildlife officers and state park staff will also continue education efforts throughout the summer at boat launches between Palisade and Loma. Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff will work closely with the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Grand Valley Water Users Association on sampling efforts in the Colorado River and Government Highline Canal. For prevention measures, CPW recommended people to clean, drain and dry motorized and hand-launched vessels – including paddleboards and kayaks. Parks and wildlife said this is critical to prevent situations similar to the one that happened at Highline Lake. The lake was closed and drained last year after invasive zebra mussels were discovered. CPW also said anglers can keep their gear free of mud and plants between each use. This prevents unknowingly moving a species from one body of water to another or between different stretches of the same river which can create a domino effort of invasion with irreversible ecological damage. 'When we think of ANS prevention, we often only think about motorized boats and forget about other ways invasive species can be introduced or spread,' said Robert Walters, CPW's invasive species program manager. 'However, nonmotorized or hand-launched watercraft users, anglers and hunters all play a part in preventing the spread of invasive species. By taking the extra time to complete a few simple steps, you can help prevent zebra mussels, or any other invasive species, from spreading to other bodies of water throughout Colorado.' Trump Champions Tina Peters in Social Media Post
Grand Junction, Colo. (KREX) – The criminal trial of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters began right here in Grand Junction and has since captured the nation's attention, including that of President Donald Trump. Just yesterday, the President took to social media fiercely advocating for Peters, who was sentenced in October of 2024 to nine years of incarceration after a jury found her guilty on seven counts for her role in a data breach scheme linked to the 2020 presidential election. In a May 5th dated post on Truth Social, President Trump calls for the Department of Justice to take 'all necessary action' to secure her release. He calls Peters a 'hostage' being held in a Colorado prison by the democrats for political reasons, and an 'innocent Political Prisoner', describing her as 'horribly and unjustly punished in the form of Cruel and Unusual Punishment.' The president also directly mentions Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, labeling him 'Radical Left', and calling Peter's situation a 'Communist persecution by the Radical Left Democrats to cover up their Election crimes and misdeeds in 2020.' Attorney General Phil Weiser released a statement to us in response saying quote, 'Tina Peters is in prison because of her own actions. A grand jury indicted her and a trial jury found her guilty of breaking Colorado's criminal laws. No one is above the law. The Colorado Attorney General's Office will continue to defend this criminal conviction in post-conviction proceedings and on appeal. We are firm in pursuing justice for the people of the state of Colorado, protecting free and fair elections, and standing up for the rule of law.' We've reached out to the Department of Justice for comment on President Trump's most recent order but have yet to receive word. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
