How much would Westerville levy cost taxpayers?

WESTERVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — As lawmakers at the Ohio Statehouse talk about property tax relief, Westerville City Schools is putting an earned income tax levy on the November ballot. Most recent school levies in central Ohio are property tax levies, but some said an earned income tax levy could be more appealing to voters, especially those on a fixed income. Westerville City Schools voters will see a 0.75 percent earned income tax levy in November, which means people who are retired, on social security or unemployed will not be taxed. Ohio House overrides one budget veto, hoping to provide property tax relief 'There's a potential future ballot issue that would eliminate property taxes in the state of Ohio,' Westerville City Schools Treasurer Nicole Marshall said. 'We've heard a lot of lawmakers, you know, they're focused on property tax reform.' With property taxes so high, Marshall said she thought the best thing for the district was an income tax levy. 'We were very much mindful of we have senior citizens who are worried about being able to stay in their homes, that are retired, and that we do think that this would be a relief to them,' Marshall said. Bill Phillis, a consultant for the Ohio Coalition for Equity and Adequacy of School Funding, noted that with many local property tax levies failing in recent years, it makes sense for districts to try a different approach, especially in communities with many residents on fixed incomes. 'A lot of the older folks who, you know, don't have as much income as they did in previous years, that's kind of a good deal for them,' Phillis said. 'For the, you know, high salaried folks, it's not such a good deal.' Olentangy coach resigns amid investigation into inappropriate text messages With the most recent state budget, Phillis said the burden of paying for public education is falling more on local taxpayers. He said he could see more districts following in Westerville's footsteps. 'If they don't solve that and keep pushing it back to the local level, then I assume that there might be some more interest in the income tax,' Phillis said. For residents earning $60,000 a year, the levy, if approved, would cost $450 annually, Marshall said. To calculate how much the levy would cost you annually, multiply your annual salary by .0075. AEP, Westerville can take control of smart thermostats in heat wave, here's what to know

Don't touch that dial, Westerville. Residents in the city's energy savings program are watching their thermostats set themselves this week in response to the heat wave melting central Ohio and beyond. Westerville's Electric Division, which serves all of the city, on Monday, June 23, raised temperatures in the homes of the 1,084 customers in the division's energy savings program, and notified customers that it planned to do the same from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 25. Customers unhappy with the change can override the division's settings. The phantom thermostat changes aren't new. Each summer, the division typically adjusts thermostats eight to 13 times, said Westerville Community Affairs Manager Mariah Beidleman. Last summer, thermostats were adjusted nine times between June 19 and Aug. 28. The adjustments are typically done in two steps, said Beidleman. Thermostats are first dropped 2½ degrees for an hour to cool the home, then raised 4 degrees for two or three hours. American Electric Power manages a similar program called the Power Rewards: Smart Thermostat Program, which allows AEP to adjust participants' thermostats remotely. The AEP program changes thermostats in the same way as the Westerville one: homes are first cooled, then thermostats bumped up 3 degrees during heat waves. AEP officials could not be reached to say whether the utility has employed the program during this heat wave. Citing the "significant burden" the heat wave is placing on the electric grid, AEP asked customers this week to limit their energy use during peak hours of 3-7 p.m. by turning off or unplugging unused devices and lights, turning up their thermostats and avoiding the use of large appliances like dishwashers, ovens and washing machines. The National Weather Service in Wilmington has issued an "extreme heat watch" for the central Ohio area from Sunday, June 22, to 8 p.m. June 25. Westerville resident, PGA golfer Jason Day stands out at U.S. Open practice with wild shorts

He wasn't born in America, but that isn't stopping Westerville's Jason Day from representing the Stars and Stripes. As Day has started practice for the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Pennsylvania, he has done so while donning American flag shorts that have caught the attention of reporters and fans alike on hand covering the build-up to the event. Advertisement Day has rounded out the outfit with an American flag-themed white jacket, looking like he's ready for a Fourth of July cookout as much as a golf tournament. Day, 37, lives in Westerville with his wife and five kids. He did not participate in the 2025 Memorial Tournament due to a sore wrist.
