Westerville resident, PGA golfer Jason Day stands out at U.S. Open practice with wild shorts
He wasn't born in America, but that isn't stopping Westerville's Jason Day from representing the Stars and Stripes. As Day has started practice for the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Pennsylvania, he has done so while donning American flag shorts that have caught the attention of reporters and fans alike on hand covering the build-up to the event. Advertisement Day has rounded out the outfit with an American flag-themed white jacket, looking like he's ready for a Fourth of July cookout as much as a golf tournament. Day, 37, lives in Westerville with his wife and five kids. He did not participate in the 2025 Memorial Tournament due to a sore wrist. Westerville hires its first woman chief of police
WESTERVILLE, Ohio (WCMH) — Westerville City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Holly Murchland as the new chief of police, the first woman in the city's history to hold the position. Murchland isn't necessarily new to the role — she's been acting chief of police since last November after former chief Charles Chandler officially retired earlier this year. Morrow County comes together to remember fallen deputy 'I'm very honored, very humbled to be given this opportunity to lead such a wonderful organization,' Murchland said. 'It's filled with just great people and it's a great community.' Murchland has been with the Westerville Police Department for six years. During that time, she's been the assistant chief of police. While she says being the first woman chief is an honor, this isn't new to her. 'I was the first lieutenant, the first agency that I worked for; I've been the first assistant chief command officer here, so I understand the importance of that,' Murchland said. 'And again, being the first, I just want to make sure I'm not the last.' Murchland is a 32-year law enforcement veteran. As she officially takes on this new role, she's looking to grow the department alongside the city's expected growth. 'We do have our own training academy,' she said. 'We're looking to expand training opportunities internally and externally, bring people in here again. We have been blessed with this wonderful new facility and we want to use it.' Murchland realizes this announcement comes at a difficult time. Just last week, there were three shootings that put officers in harm's way in central Ohio. Lieutenant Governor Tressel discusses DEI, state's workforce preparedness, and possible gubernatorial run 'Our hearts go out to Morrow County, to Mifflin Township, to Marysville,' she said. 'It's a terrible thing. It's a tragedy and we do our very best to prevent it as much as we can. Again, we want to make sure that we're honoring all of those that have given the ultimate sacrifice.' Westerville police has a staff of more than 100 employees, including 80 sworn officers. Murchland said she, along with the officers, take their role seriously in ensuring the safety of the community. Murchland will be officially sworn in later this month. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Turner-Kokosing JV files suit over $1B battery project
This story was originally published on Construction Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Construction Dive newsletter. A joint venture of Turner Construction and Kokosing Industrial has sued battery materials manufacturer Ascend Elements for $138 million in alleged unpaid bills on its $1 billion plant project in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The complaint, filed in Christian County Circuit Court in Kentucky on Feb. 14, alleges that since the last day the JV performed work at the campus known as Apex 1 in December, Ascend has refused to pay the JV its fees. Nineteen other project stakeholders are named as codefendants in the suit, many related to mechanics liens. The suit claims that Ascend breached its contractual obligations by unjustly enriching itself and violating Kentucky's Fairness in Construction Act. It's seeking to enforce liens that it has filed against the manufacturer, have the case heard before a jury and be paid for its work. The 140-acre, $1 billion Apex 1 project would be the home of North America's first electric vehicle battery cathode precursor manufacturing facility for the materials used in EV battery production, according to Westborough, Massachusetts-based Ascend. New York City-based Turner and Westerville, Ohio-headquartered Kokosing were selected for the project in December 2022. They were joined by Toledo, Ohio-based SSOE Group for design work. The build is funded in part by the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and two grants from the U.S. Department of Energy worth $480 million. Chris McFadden, vice president of communications and marketing for Turner, said on behalf of the JV that the contractors accommodated Ascend's evolving technology and implemented several significant design revisions. 'The team's dedication to Ascend and to the goals and mission of the project led us to continue work and incur millions of dollars of costs,' McFadden wrote in a statement. Thomas Frey, senior director of marketing and communications for Ascend Elements, said that the company was committed to paying the JV, so long as the work is legitimate. 'We are prepared to pay for all authorized and legitimate work performed, but we are also committed to being responsible stewards of both public and private funds,' the company wrote in an email to Construction Dive. 'As a result, we are reviewing all work performed by Turner-Kokosing and its subcontractors.' Ascend declined to comment when asked what prompted the review of the work on the build. Construction has been paused since late 2024, Frey said, and Ascend plans to restart work in the third quarter of 2025, with the site operational in Q3 2026. He also said the firm is considering other contractors for the project. Sign in to access your portfolio
