Demolition to begin at vacant Mary Lane Hospital campus in Ware
WARE — Baystate Health said Wednesday it now has permits allowing it to tear down much of the Baystate Mary Lane campus and demolition will begin Aug. 11.
Work will include all structures on campus except for the landmark Wetherby Building built in 1923. Baystate acknowledged the special meaning the building holds for both Baystate and the community.
'Work will be done in the coming weeks to weatherize it,' the release said. 'Once this work is complete, the Wetherby Building will be boarded up to meet the Town bylaw requirement for a vacant property. It is expected that this work will also begin in the coming weeks and continue into early October.'
Baystate Health said the contractor will start moving equipment on to the 21-acre, five-building, property at 85–89 South St.
Two months ago, neighbors became concerned after spotting equipment on site. Those contractors were doing preliminary work including removing elevators and cleanup.
Baystate and the town tried for two years to find a developer to rehab the buildings. But none stepped forward.
The hospital has been closed since October 2023.
