Double delight for Wexford trainer Anton Butler at Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium
And it was a very good night for Wexford trainer Anton Butler with a book-ended double. The first race saw his charge, Mayflower Storm, going up well from his trap two draw. And with a wall of runners neck and neck into the first bend, he had the inside line. Storm made good use of it to lead into the back straight and it was a lead he was never going to give up, running out a comfortable three-length winner from trap five runner Cushie Rustic in a fast 28.81. Butler's other winner came in race nine, the last of the night, when De Bono Lad was sent off the 6/4 favourite and gave his followers few anxious moments. He showed far too much early pace for the field, racing into a clear lead into the opening bends, and ran out a very clear six lengths winner in a good time of 32.84. Enniscorthy trainer Thomas Codd continued his good run when also recording a nice double. His Cushie Robyn flew from traps to open up a big lead down the back and looked home for all money. However, his backers got a little fright close to home as his stride shortened dramatically and trap two runner Trump Time was coming fast, but Cushie had done enough to hold on by half a length. Then in race four, Cushie Mick ran a game race and was not for losing. He showed the better early pace to grab the lead into the opening bend and go a few lengths clear down the back. However, trap six runner Dark Fairy came with a strong challenge between the lower bends to just take the lead into the home straight, but Cushie battled back near the line to get the verdict by a neck in a time of 29.25. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more The Monday night card featured the semi-finals of the Wexford Greyhound Owners and Breeders Unraced Stake. And both were won by Tipperary trainer Pat Buckley as Sallagh Larry and Sallagh Curly prevailed. The first semi saw a bit of a shock as red-hot favourite Untold Story failed to qualify. Trap two runner Sallagh Larry led and ran out an easy winner in a fast time of 28.77. Not to be outdone, his full brother Sallagh Curly was sent off the red-hot 2/5 favourite in the second semi. And while he was slow away from his trap two draw, he tracked beautifully on the rail around the opening bends to race to the lead by the second bend and went right away to score an impressive eight and a half lengths victory in a fast 28.78. The brothers look like they will be hard to stop, but as we all know anything can happen in finals. Fast times a big feature as Fairly Giddy makes early pace tell in Stake decider at Enniscorthy greyhound stadium
The highlight on Thursday night was the final of the annual April Stake, worth €4,000 to the winner. Local owner Margaret Stafford saw her Fairly Giddy flash from traps as she has been doing all stake. And she saved her fastest split for the right night as she led the field a merry dance down the back, opening up a good four-length advantage. Trap four runner Tip Top Bundee was chasing her hard to close down the gap as they turned for the judge, with trap six runner Pandereto and trap one runner Bust The Tins also putting in strong finishing efforts up the rail. In a driving finish that saw the four runners flash across the line together, it was a very close call but Giddy had made her early pace tell and held on for a short-head win from Tip Top, with Panderto half a length away in third in a time of 29.14. Fairly Giddy was completing her hat-trick of wins in the stake and was a very deserving victor. The Monday night card saw the start of the Wexford Greyhound Owners and Breeders Unraced Stake, with some very fast times recorded. That started in the very first heat as trap six runner Untold Sterling, the red-hot favourite, was impressive. He was led down towards the third bend by trap four runner Four Over before flashing past to race clear to a seven lengths win in a very fast 28.58. Heat two saw clever tracking at the first bend by trap two runner Bounceback Luna who checked back to the rail to avoid trouble and run second into the back behind the runaway leader, trap three runner Mutts Maximus who had a big lead. Gradually Luna closed the gap and was within striking distance off the last bend and, sure enough, she came storming through to score by one and a half lengths from the latter in a time of 29.03. Heat three saw the third odds-on favourite in a row win, but it was not without some anxious moments as Badminton Chopin stumbled out of his trap one draw and had plenty to do going into the opening bends. Like the previous winner, he tracked cleverly on the rail and gained several places to move into second spot behind the leader, trap six runner Roberstown Cruz. Robertstown ran wide off the third bend and Badminton came up on the rail to lead into the straight and went on to beat that rival by three-quarters of a length in a time of 29.27. Indeed, all five heats run were won by odds-on faourites, and in heat five this favourite was made to work hard for the victory. Trap four runner Borderan Ace showed the better turn of pace off the second bend to lead from trap one runner and favourite, Sallagh Curly. However, Sallagh came back to join the leader into the third bend but then ran wide approaching the last corner, allowing Borderan to come back on the inside. The favourite was all out to hold the renewed run of Boderan by a length in a time of 29.19. Heat six was a very messy race but in the end the favourite came through to score a two and a half lengths win and complete a Sallagh double, as this time it was Larry for the victory in a time of 29.47. Race seven was the final of the Timeclub @ Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium Stake and again the theme of the night continued. The red-hot favourite, trap four runner Dashing Tom, proved too strong for his rivals when getting around the opening bends in front. And while trap three runner White Gem tried hard to stay in touch, Tom was dashing hard for the winning line and raced to a clearcut three and a half length win in a fast 28.87 to take the €1,250 cheque for owner Thomas Power and trainer Myles Roban from Enniscorthy.
