Livvy Dunne: How New York Times ‘hit piece' led to SI Swimsuit dream
Olivia 'Livvy' Dunne said her career with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 'all started because of a hit piece' The New York Times published about her in November 2022. During a recent appearance on the 'What's Your Story?' podcast, the retired NCAA gymnast recalled the fallout from the past interview about her Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), which was titled, 'New Endorsements for College Athletes Resurface an Old Concern: Sex Sells' — and featured a snapshot of her in a LSU team-issued leotard. 'So I got offered to be in Sports Illustrated — it all started because of a hit piece The New York Times wrote about me,' Dunne, who landed the cover of the 2025 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, told host Stephanie McMahon. 'So they came to our gymnastics facility at LSU, took pictures of me. They said, 'Wear your team-issued attire, put on a leotard,'' and they took a picture of me standing in front of the beam, like any gymnast would, and then they blew it up on the screen and put the headline, 'Sex Sells.' 5 Olivia Dunne explains how she became a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model during an appearance on the 'What's Your Story?' podcast with Steph McMahon on July 17, 2025. YouTube/What's Your Story 'Okay, well, you just came into the facility and took pictures of me in our team-issued attire and blew it up on a screen… So I was like, 'Okay, well, this is crazy.' And there was obviously a lot of backlash to The New York Times because of that.' At the time, Dunne fired back at the newspaper in an Instagram Story post. 5 Livvy Dunne's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover for the 2025 issue. SI Cover 'And I decided I [was] going to put that same picture that they posted and captioned 'sex sells' on my Instagram story and write 'at The New York Times, is this too much?'' Dunne recalled of her clap back in 2022. 'Because, come on, you know what you're doing. You just put a picture of me in a leotard for clicks and then caption it 'sex sells.' '… And then people loved that. They were like, 'This is so great,' because no, it's not too much. You're in your team-issued attire, which is a leotard for gymnasts. I can't control that…. So it was just ridiculous. There was a lot of positive feedback from that. So, Sports Illustrated reached out to my agent. I was so excited about that. That was always a dream of mine. I mean, there's some legends and some amazing athletes that have been in Sports Illustrated.' 5 Olivia Dunne walks the runway at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Runway Show at W South Beach on May 31, 2025 in Miami Beach, Florida. Getty Images The New York Times story was published with the sub-headline, 'Female college athletes are making millions thanks to their large social media followings. But some who have fought for equity in women's sports worry that their brand-building is regressive.' This isn't the first time Dunne has called out The New York Times publicly. 5 Olivia Dunne during her interview with the New York Post Sports in September 2024. Brian Zak/NY Post During an appearance on the 'Full Send Podcast' in 2023, Dunne called the piece 'complete BS,' and claimed the reporter 'was asking me very odd questions' in the phone interview. 'The interviewer called me and he was asking me very odd questions. It was worded quite weird,' Dunne said. 'He was like, 'So, how does it feel to be a small petite blonde gymnast doing so well with NIL?' I was just like, 'Why does it matter that I'm petite and blonde?' You can just ask me about NIL without you having to use these weird ways of saying it.' 5 Olivia Dunne attends the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Social Club Celebrates the Launch of the 2025 Issue at Moonlight Studios on May 17, 2025 in New York City. Randy Orton Reflects Upon Intense Weight Gain During Injury Layoff
Image via WWE Randy Orton has been the cornerstone of the WWE since 2002. The 14-time World Champion has faced every legend of his era and the era beyond to establish himself as one of the greats. To sustain a career that has continued for over 23 years, one must remain in pristine shape, especially in a physically intensive business like professional wrestling. 'The Viper' has done just that. However, the past few years have been challenging for the now 45-year-old. The most prominent physical challenge Orton faced in recent years was a spinal fusion surgery that kept him out of action between May 2022 and November 2023. During this time, the usual 250ish Orton experienced a tremendous amount of weight gain while recovering. Randy Orton Says He Weighed Over 300 Pounds During His Recovery Speaking to Stephanie McMahon on her 'What's Your Story' podcast, Orton revealed that after his injury, his diet changed a lot, which led to a massive tick in weight. "I went from like, kind of 240 to 250-ish. Over the winter, I had some time off, and I was a little over 300 pounds. Like, 'Oh, this guy gets a spinal fusion and he gains 80 pounds,' smart." Orton said that his weight gain was mainly attributed to his affinity for sweet consumables, which he termed as a 'sugar tooth from hell'. Moreover, 'The Viper' listed some items that became part of his diet during his recovery. "I went through like, a Nutella phase,' he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo 'And that's one of the reasons I was just over 300 over Christmas. Is because, like, the big tub of popcorn that has, like, the different… chocolate and caramel… I killed a couple of those, and it's like, I'll start fuc***g with a tin of fu***ng some shit over Christmas. Servings are 84 servings. Killed this thing in two nights.' But once he returned to training, this approach changed, and he focused on getting in shape to come back to the ring. As a result, Orton finally made his return at Survivor Series 2023 in Chicago to team up with Cody Rhodes, Sami Zayn, and Seth Rollins to face The Judgment Day and Drew McIntyre. And ever since returning, 'The Viper' has been a prominent face on the blue brand. Moreover, fans noticed that Orton's physique was different than before. He carried more muscle than usual and was billed at around 275-290 pounds, which is a 25-pound increase from his previous weight of 245 pounds. Now, Orton will face McIntyre at Saturday Night's Main Event on July 12 in Atlanta. Randy Orton Reveals The Major WWE Backstage Change Under Triple H
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. WWE veteran Randy Orton has revealed a significant positive change in the company's backstage culture, crediting Chief Content Officer Triple H for the new direction. The 14-time world champion shared a specific story that highlights a major shift in the company's priorities under the new leadership. Speaking on the "What's Your Story?" podcast with Stephanie McMahon, Orton discussed how the company now has a "family first" mentality. This is a change he says would have been unheard of in the past. Leading By Example In WWE Orton recalled a recent instance where he learned Triple H was not present at a television taping. When he asked where his boss was, he was told Triple H was attending his daughter Murphy's championship softball game. For Orton, this small act represented a monumental shift in the company's culture. "Just knowing that in the past that never would have happened, and knowing that now it's okay," Orton said (H/T "It's almost like, without even knowing it... he's leading by example." He explained that this leadership gives him confidence that he could also prioritize a major family event without fear of professional repercussions. "There's no question in my mind that if I say 'Hunter... I've got this thing, and... it's very important to me and my family and my kids... that I'm there,' there's no question in my mind that they'll say 'Done,'" Orton stated. "Like that is huge. That's everything." RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA - NOVEMBER 2: Randy Orton enters the arena during Crown Jewel at Mohammed Abdo Arena on November 2, 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. WWE/Getty Images More news: WWE News: Steve Austin Reveals Real-Life Vince McMahon Confrontation Randy Orton's Perspective This cultural shift is especially meaningful coming from a star like Orton, who has been with WWE for 25 years. For decades, the industry was known for its grueling "grind" schedule, where performers often worked through injuries and missed major family milestones. The idea of a top executive, let alone a top talent, missing a TV taping for a family event was often seen as a lack of dedication. Orton himself has recently gained a new perspective after returning from a career-threatening back injury that required spinal fusion surgery. After more than a year away, he understands the importance of life outside the ring, making Triple H's new "family first" approach all the more significant to veterans who have spent their lives on the road. The praise is also powerful given the long and often violent history between Randy Orton and Triple H. Triple H originally brought a young Orton into WWE as his protégé in the Evolution faction, but their relationship famously imploded when Orton won his first World Heavyweight Championship. This led to a years-long, bloody rivalry that was one of the defining feuds of the Ruthless Aggression era. For Orton to now be the one praising Triple H's leadership shows the immense respect that has developed between the two former rivals over their storied careers.
