Kate Middleton Pays Homage to Princess Diana Through Key Detail in Outfit Worn to Christen the HMS Glasgow

Kate Middleton—along with her husband Prince William—took part in a ship naming ceremony for the HMS Glasgow in Scotland on May 22. The future queen held a masterclass in literal dressing, wearing a navy and white Suzannah London coatdress and a sentimental pair of heirloom earrings. The sapphire and diamond drop earrings once belonged to the Princess of Wales' late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, who was thought to have received the pair as a wedding gift when she married Prince Charles in Middleton's ensemble yesterday as she took part in a ship naming ceremony for the HMS Glasgow was a masterclass in literal dressing—and the look took several cues from the style of Kate's late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Seeing as the Princess of Wales—known as the Duchess of Rothesay while in Scotland—was launching a ship, she wore a nautical-inspired navy and white coatdress from Suzannah London that fit the theme of the day. The silhouette of her coatdress mirrored outfits Diana wore throughout her years as a royal—shoulder pads included. But perhaps the most outright callout to Diana was a pair of the late Princess of Wales' sapphire and diamond earrings, thought to be a wedding present when Diana married Prince Charles in 1981. The earrings feature cabochon sapphires surrounded by diamonds, with a central diamond connecting the two clusters, per Town & Country, which added that the sapphires are thought to come from the strap of Diana's Saudi sapphire watch. Kate wore this particular pair of earrings with the same Philip Treacy hat she wore on May 22 to Trooping the Colour in June 2022, which doubled as Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee marking her historic 70 years on the throne. Diana wore this pair of earrings while on tour in Melbourne and at the Council of Fashion Designers Awards in New York City in 1995. The earrings were also present on Diana's 1994 cover of British Vogue, which marked her 33rd birthday. Kate, for her part, wore the set for the President of South Korea's state visit to London in 2023, as well as more than one Trooping the Colour. The pair also complement Kate's sapphire and diamond engagement ring—which, of course, also previously belonged to Diana. In addition to her Suzannah London coatdress, Philip Treacy hat, and heirloom earrings, fashion site What Kate Wore reported that Kate wore Gianvito Rossi suede pumps, a clutch by Emmy London, and a new brooch, designed by local jeweler Simon Porter of James Porter and Son, a fifth-generation family-run firm. The Naval crown is present at the top of the brooch, and thistles—Scotland's national flower—are also visible, as is the word 'Glasgow' near the top of the piece. What Kate Wore made a prediction that the figure in the center of the brooch is St. Kentigern (also known as St. Mungo), patron saint of Glasgow. Per Tatler, Porter said it was an 'absolute honor' to see Kate wearing the brooch. 'Against a plain navy background, it really stood out,' he added, per The Daily Mail. The Princess of Wales—then the Duchess of Cambridge—was named the sponsor of the HMS Glasgow in June 2021, and, per The Daily Mail, is said to hold 'a real interest' in the ship 'and in the lives of those who will serve onboard.' At the naming ceremony yesterday, the future queen said, 'I have the pleasure to name this ship HMS Glasgow. May God bless her and all who sail on her.' Of Thursday's events, Kate 'appeared relieved it had gone to plan,' The Daily Mail reported. 'It's so beautifully made,' Kate said of the vessel, adding, 'It's so exciting to see it all come together. All the technology is so impressive. What's really interesting as well is seeing the international interest.' While at the royal engagement yesterday, Kate admitted, 'I'm still learning all my naval lingo. There are a lot of abbreviations that I don't fully understand. I've got a lot to learn.' Read the original article on InStyle

Kate Middleton's Office Issues Rare Statement After ‘Substance Rather Than Style' Controversy

Kate Middleton's office at Kensington Palace has issued a rare statement responding to backlash over the future queen's new wardrobe policy. On February 1, The Sunday Times' article about the new policy—with the headline 'Focus on My Work Not My Wardrobe'—detailed that Kensington Palace would 'no longer release details of Kate's outfits because she wants to concentrate on substance rather than style.' 'There is an absolute feeling that it [the public work] is not about what the princess is wearing,' a palace source told the outlet at the time. 'She wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people, and the causes she is spotlighting. There will always be an appreciation of what the princess is wearing from some of the public, and she gets that. But do we need to be officially always saying what she is wearing? No.' (For context, Buckingham Palace routinely issues details of Queen Camilla's outfits for all of her public engagements.) Now, following recent backlash, People reported that Kensington Palace has issued 'a rare statement' about the brouhaha on February 11, with a spokesperson telling the outlet, 'Over the last week, I have received numerous questions about a story regarding the Princess of Wales' clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits.' 'To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not the Princess of Wales,' the statement continued. 'The comments that were reported should not be directly attributed to the Princess of Wales. To be clear, there has been no change in our approach to sharing information about Her Royal Highness's clothing.' Backlash about the decision mainly surrounded 'the Kate Middleton effect' and how, since announcing her engagement to Prince William in 2010 wearing a sapphire blue Issa wrap dress, Kate has bolstered the British fashion industry because of what she chooses to wear. The future queen is a champion of British fashion, wearing primarily British brands like Alexander McQueen, Jenny Packham, and Catherine Walker, and selling out pieces from smaller businesses—sometimes clothing, but mostly accessories. Sites like What Kate Wore focus on identifying what the Princess of Wales is wearing each time she appears in public, and, per People, 'Critics also pointed out that her fashion choices not only pay homage to the legacy of Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth but also serve as an important tool for connecting with the public and should not be minimized.' Catherine Zoraida, a British jewelry designer whose earrings Kate wears regularly, said that 'the Kate Middleton effect' on her brand was 'crazy,' telling The Times, 'It's something like a 500 percent lift in sales whenever she is seen in a pair of earrings. They're not just one hit wonders, either. She looks after them well, and whenever she rewears them, there is another uplift.' Though People reported that there is 'every likelihood' that details of what Kate is wearing will be shared during significant occasions—like royal tours or when hosting visiting heads of state—it's notable that Kate's team didn't share fashion credits for what she wore on her January 14 visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, her first solo royal engagement in over a year after announcing last March that she had been diagnosed with cancer. This decision may signify the way forward for the palace—sharing outfit details on the larger occasions, but choosing not to do so for week-to-week royal engagements Kate undertakes publicly as she continues her gradual return to public life. Though outfit details weren't shared last month, Kate continues to show support for British fashion—albeit in a different way. On January 30, she toured a family-run textiles manufacturer in Wales, 'aligning with her interest in the industry,' People reported—but outfit details weren't shared from the visit. 'When she goes to the [James] Bond premiere or is at Trooping the Colour, of course she puts on the 'uniform' of the role,' a close friend of Kate's shared with The Sunday Times in 2022. 'But what was enormously frustrating and difficult for her, especially in the early days, was she was going out and doing the work she was interested in and was hugely important to her, and people just talked about what she was wearing.' Kensington Palace Addresses Kate Middleton Style Controversy in Rare Statement amid Backlash

Kate Middleton's office is clarifying the official policy for releasing details her clothing following recent backlash over new palace guidance. After more than a week's discussion about the Princess of Wales' clothing and whether they will change their formal policy on sharing her fashion details, Kensington Palace released a rare statement. It came in the wake of a Sunday Times story titled "Princess of Wales: Focus on my work not my wardrobe," on Feb. 1 in which a royal source was quoted saying Kate "wants the focus to be on the really important issues, the people and the causes she is spotlighting." On Tuesday, Kensington Palace issued a statement to PEOPLE saying, 'Over the last week, I have received numerous questions about a story regarding The Princess of Wales's clothing and how Kensington Palace shares information about her outfits. 'To clarify, the comments that appeared in the article were from me, not The Princess of Wales," the statement continued. "The comments that were reported should not be directly attributed to The Princess of Wales. To be clear, there has been no change in our approach to sharing information about Her Royal Highness's clothing.' It is true that for many years, the palace has not always issued news of what Kate is wearing. And online sleuths, led famously by the site What Kate Wore, enjoyed tracking them down and sourcing where they, or similar outfits, could be bought. The full quote in The Sunday Times story said, 'There is an absolute feeling that [the public work] is not about what the princess is wearing. "There will always be an appreciation of what the princess is wearing from some of the public and she gets that. But do we need to be officially always saying what she is wearing? No. The style is there but it's about the substance.' Having stepped back from public duties for most of 2024 due to her cancer treatment — which she finished in September last year, announcing in January that she is in remission — Princess Kate has been gradually returning to work but with new priorities and seemingly a new look. She has stepped out several times in the last 10 days. Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! There is every likelihood that details will be released at significant family and cultural moments such as on tours or when she is helping host visiting heads of state. The initial story in the Sunday Times came two days after Princess Kate, 43, stepped out in South Wales to visit a Tŷ Hafan children's hospice, coinciding with the announcement that she's taking on its patronage (like Princess Diana), and touring a family run-textiles manufacturer, aligning with her interest in the industry. It's notable that Princess Kate's team did not share the fashion credits for what she wore to the Royal Marsden Hospital in London on Jan. 14, her first solo royal engagement in over a year after she announced in March 2024 that she was undergoing treatment for cancer.
