‘What We Do in the Shadows' cast on alternate series finale endings and the parody that didn't work

The cast of What We Do in the Shadows was visibly sad when they realized they may be all together for the last time, appearing on stage at Disney FYC Fest at the DGA Theater. But as the sixth and final season of the FX series demonstrated — as well as a slew of alternate endings they screened at the panel — they've gotten pretty good at handling goodbyes. Showrunner Paul Simms, who parodied the famous finale moments in The Usual Suspects, Rosemary's Baby, and Newhart in the alternate endings, revealed the additional iconic last-moments reference they were really trying to make happen but couldn't make work. More from GoldDerby 'Wicked: For Good' trailer teases more monkeys, a wedding, and Dorothy Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood: The debunked 'White Lotus' feud explained Justine Lupe on the unexpected chemistries that power Netflix's 'Nobody Wants This' "The one we talked about most besides these was the ending of M*A*S*H, where he leaves in the helicopter and he spelled out 'Goodbye' in the rocks," Simms said. "We thought, budget-wise, how would we do that? Then for a while we thought the vampires fly away and they look back and Guillermo has spelled out 'Goodbye.' Then we thought it was all too complicated." "But if we were going to do a TV ending, Newhart was the one," he added. Mark Proksch, who played Colin on the series, agreed that the Newhart finale — often called the best series finale moment of all time, with its clever callback to Bob Newhart's prior series The Bob Newhart Show — was held in the highest regard. "Paul and I, our idol is Bob Newhart," Proksch told Gold Derby. "[Bob] had an interview in Parade magazine about a year before his passing where he talked about his favorite show that he and his wife would watch was Shadows, which blew our minds! … That Newhart ending was a special one." After a screening of the series finale, including all three alternate endings, Simms moderated a panel with the main cast, including Proksch, Matt Berry (who received the show's first acting Emmy nomination last year), Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén, and Kristen Schaal. FX Demetriou also had a special personal connection to one of the endings: Having played Nadja as Rosemary in Rosemary's Baby while in her last trimester of pregnancy, she believed she was about to deliver her very own baby right there on set. "I was seven months pregnant and felt like the baby was crowning," she said. "It was really hot and I had sweat dripping down my legs and I thought it was the baby." "But that final scene was surreal and so sad, but I loved the Rosemary's Baby stuff," she added, quipping, "It was very prophetic because my child is a demon." When asked what was his favorite part of the finale, Berry recalled the scene where the vampires are gathered together singing: " sat at the piano because I also turned 50 that day," he remembered. "That's the craziest birthday I think I'll ever have." Gold Derby asked Berry if he could see a reunion in the future, and fans may not like his answer. "I think the best thing to do with it — and this is crazy as an actor saying this, but I would just recast the whole thing," he offered, suggesting, "You can have a whole new load of people, like SNL or Doctor Who... another load of new comics to do it. You can't go back to these things. You were who you were when you did it. … Let someone else do it." Nicola Walker says 'I'm thrilled' as new Disney+ series begins filming

Nicola Walker and Jemaine Clement are set to star in a new six-part series for Disney+ . Disney+ has commenced production on a new six-part anti-romcom series, tentatively titled Alice and Steve. The series stars Nicola Walker of Unforgotten fame and Jemaine Clement from What We Do in the Shadows as lifelong best mates, Alice and Steve. ‌ Their bond is tested when Steve begins a relationship with Alice's 26-year-old daughter Izzy, (Yali Topol Margalith). ‌ Accustomed to each other's tumultuous lives and dubious choices, this new development might just push their friendship over the edge. As their once sturdy bond faces the ultimate challenge, the new romance poses a threat to their families, futures, and all that lies between, reports Surrey Live. Nicola expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating: "I'm thrilled to be stepping into the fabulous world of friendship, motherhood, marriage, frantic revenge and fierce love that Sophie Goodhart has created and to be doing it with Jemaine Clement is completely joyful!" Jemaine also shared his excitement, revealing his connection with his character: "I really relate to Steve – he's classy, stylish and an all-round good guy – except for when he isn't. "I'm excited to be working with the wonderful Nicola Walker and seeing how Steve and Alice's relationship descends into absolute chaos." ‌ The cast of the upcoming series also features Joel Fry as Alice's husband Daniel, Tyrese Eaton-Dyce portraying her son Dom, and Marcia Warren taking on the role of her mother, Val. Eilidh Fisher and Ebony Aboagye joining the ensemble. Labelled as 'emotional, messy and hilariously absurd', the six-part drama promises to take viewers on an emotional whirlwind. ‌ The synopsis reads: "Alice and Steve (w/t) is a sophisticated, will they, won't they anti-romantic comedy. Will Alice forgive Steve? Will Steve and Izzy make a relationship work?" "Will Alice and Steve ever be able to be friends again? Amongst all the questions hanging in the balance, one thing is certain: their lives will never be the same again." Lee Mason, Executive Director of Scripted at Disney Plus, commented: "Get ready for a riotous mix of betrayal and revenge in a world of beautifully messy and flawed characters brilliantly created by Sophie Goodhart. "We're thrilled to be bringing this twisted and hilarious story to Disney Plus audiences – masterfully brought to life by British acting legend Nicola Walker, as you've never seen her before, alongside New Zealand's comic royalty, Jemaine Clement." While the release date remains under wraps, filming has kicked off in London.

36 Things That'll Elevate Your Home's Aesthetic

A paper standing lamp that'll add soft, diffused light to any space so you can continue to live your best life — AKA one where you never ever have to flick on an overhead light. A baroque-inspired mirror — with a gorg gilded frame — if you've long dreamt of owning ***that*** Anthropologie mirror but don't want to take out a second mortgage on your home in order to do so. This baby starts at just $90!!!!! Some vintage-inspired wall sconces so you don't have to use your cellphone flashlight to find the remote that's lost in your duvet for the fifth time tonight. Plus, they don't require any electrical work! You can pick between a plug-in version or one with rechargeable lightbulbs. A ready-made gallery wall set with eight frames and matching prints because if you're anything like me, you LOVE the look but get super anxious thinking about curating one on your own. A set of two nesting drum tables that look like they'd be featured in one of Architectural Digest's celeb home tours. While they're pretty low-profile as is, if you ever need to free up additional space you can tuck them inside of one another like a Russian nesting doll. 🪆 A wireless library light you can position over your impressive book collection or favorite family portrait. This thing costs less than 30 bucks, but it'll transform your den into a museum-worthy exhibit. A floor-length arched mirror so when the time comes that you have to dress your whole body again (and not just the part that your colleagues see on Google Meet), you'll be able to gauge if you still understand fashion. A peel-and-stick jungle mural that'll have your guests waking up wondering if they're at their friend's place in the burbs or if they actually checked into one of the hotels from The White Lotus. Some lush velvet blackout curtains if the only way you can get any shut-eye is What We Do in the Shadows–style pitch black quarters. Some beautiful wall-mounted amber bottles because waking up at 6 a.m. to get ready for your office job sucks, but these at least make you feel like you're getting ready in a hotel. A contemporary sling chair you can add to your primary bedroom or even use in place of a couch if you have a teensy tiny living room. A stark white duvet cover sure to make your space feels uber bright and clean even if there's a week's worth of laundry hiding on the side of your bed. And a gauzy cotton throw you can drape across the end of your bed in a perfectly imperfect manner. Did you just spend 10 minutes making sure it looks like you only spent 10 seconds placing it? Yes, but that's between you and me. A boucle pillow cover duo if the element your living room is missing is texture!! Even if you pick these babies up in beige or oatmeal, the nubby fabric will add dimension to your space. A set of solid ash wishbone chairs that look a hell of a lot like way more expensive options — but for a fraction of the cost. Perhaps the best part is that they come fully assembled, so you don't have to spend even one second sweating or cursing as you get your dining area together. A 100% jute rug made from super durable plant fibers, so if it's in an area that gets heavy foot traffic or just happens to be your pup's favorite place to lay about, no one will be the wiser. A simple framed print you can hang over the commode or balance on a windowsill in order to create a prettier focal point in your bathroom. A candle-warming lamp if you're the type who avoids overhead lighting like the plague. If you place it in your kitchen, it'll help dissipate food smells, too, which is a major win! A faux olive tree that'll bring a little life to your space even if it isn't technically living... An inexpensive — and WASHABLE — boho area rug capable of tying an entire room together *and* hiding that one spot on the floor you burned with hookah coal. (True Life: This Happened To One Of My Friends.) Or a faux cowhide rug with playful flecks of gold that catch the light wherever it's put. Just want to emphasize again that this is a *faux* option, so it doesn't smell, doesn't shed, and — most importantly — doesn't harm any adorable cows named Bessie or Buttercup! A modern waterfall bench if you're purposely looking for options that lack storage so your room can't collect clutter. A lightweight, easy-to-install plastic ceiling medallion that will make you feel like you live in a French chateau and not a postage-stamp-sized apartment where your kitchen, living room, and bedroom are all one and the same. A velvet ottoman with a tassel rope fringe you won't be able to resist running your fingers (or toes, tbh) through. A quilted chenille floor pillow if you love having company over, but space is at a minimum, so extra accent chairs are out of the question. I mean, who didn't love floor time as a kid? A bundle of faux pampas grass that totally nails the au natural, bohemian look you've been longing to achieve. Plus, you don't have to water them! Win win. A set of mid-century modern-inspired dining room chairs I could honestly stare at for a good hour. The rattan! The velvet! The cantilevered design! ::swoon:: Some glue-on foam ceiling tiles if you live in a new build that's sorely lacking character and/or you love the look of the real thing but don't trust yourself to use a nail gun or miter saw. A faux book display that actually hides cords and cables in its hollow interior. If your router is ruining the aesthetic of your bookshelf or media stand, this is the solution! A fancy new switch plate cover cause if you live in a rental like me, chances are your existing ones are covered in what TikTok likes to call the "landlord special" — approx. 46 coats of chipping paint. A multi-globe floor lamp if you have an empty corner that could not only use a little bit of light, but some mid-century modern-inspired flair. A faux leather tissue box cover guaranteed to make your Kleenex a work of art instead of an eyesore. A beautiful bath mat that'll match all of your beloved Persian rugs. You may have had to painstakingly source the latter from vintage emporiums and Facebook Marketplace, but this baby will ship straight to your door in two days. A decorative fruit bowl or catchall dish if your style could best be described as "looks like Joanna Gaines picked it out." A floral wall mural that'll make you feel like you're waking up in a chic Parisian apartment. Brb, gonna go watch Amélie again and dream of being in Montmartre. And some peel-and-stick stair riser decals if you're a beginner DIY king/queen, so sanding/refinishing wood or installing actual tiles is still a bit outside of your skill set.
