Husband rushes to tell wife he won big in lottery. ‘We are going to enjoy this'
A lottery player 'had to catch his breath' after he hit the jackpot in North Carolina. Then, he rushed to tell his wife he was getting richer. He invited her to Raleigh, where six-figure prize winners must go to cash in on their lucky N.C. Education Lottery tickets, according to game rules. 'I called her and told her, 'Meet me in Raleigh,'' William Carroll told lottery officials in a May 16 news release. 'We are going to enjoy this.' Carroll took his prize home to the town of Nashville, a roughly 45-mile drive northeast from Raleigh. He won $202,012 in Wheel of Bonuses, a progressive jackpot game that offers online tickets starting at 50 cents. Carroll spent $30 on his ticket, which beat 1-in-a-million odds to win the game's top-tier 'epic' jackpot prize. He couldn't believe his luck. 'I was trying to catch my breath,' the jackpot winner told lottery officials. 'I was just stunned.' Carroll 'needed some time to compose himself,' but he didn't waste much time before basking in the special moment with his wife. He kept $144,953 after taxes and plans to put his prize money toward bills, according to officials. 'I've never experienced anything like that,' Carroll said. 'I was pumped.' It's not the first time a husband immediately shared the news of his windfall. Another North Carolina lottery winner told his wife right away, but she thought he was joking, McClatchy News reported in March 2024.

A six-figure jackpot awaits a lottery player who spent part of their morning playing online games on Wednesday, May 14, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery. The identity of the player has not been released, but lottery officials say the winner lives in Nashville, about a 45-mile drive northeast from Raleigh. The player won $202,012 with a $30 ticket in Wheels of Bonuses, officials said. That comes to around a $6,733 profit for every $1 invested. Odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 31,034,483, officials say. Wheel of Bonuses is a 'digital instants' game in which players try to line up matching symbols, not unlike a slot machine. The jackpot grows until someone matches the right symbols. Players choose how much to wager 'with the price of a play ranging from 50 cents to $30,' according to the game rules. Online players who win $100,000 or more must show up in person to get their winnings at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

'I would like to take a trip to Greenland, Australia and New Zealand,' she said. The odds of that win are 1 in 62 million. 'I was in total shock,' she said. 'I always had hope, but I never hoped for something like that.' Karcher said the timing of the win works out great since she is now retired. 'This is just a lovely amount at this time in my life,' Karcher said. She claimed her prize Friday at lottery headquarters. After required federal and state tax withholdings, she took home $331,080. 'I would like to take a trip to Greenland, Australia, and New Zealand,' Karcher told lottery officials. A timetable for those trips was not revealed, but in the meantime Karcher revealed she has a far less ambitious idea — to remodel her bathroom, lottery officials said. Anything leftover will go into savings, she told officials. Wheel of Bonuses is played exclusively online, and tickets range from 50 cents to $30. The jackpot restarts at $50,000 when someone wins, officials said.
