White House to undergo £150m facelift with new ballroom
The White House is undergoing a $200m (£150m) facelift, constructing a new ballroom in the east wing. Work on the sprawling 90,000sq ft event space will begin in September and will eliminate the need for a 'large and unsightly tent' usually used to host diners at formal gatherings, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, announced on Thursday. Donald Trump, who has already implemented his polarising trademark interior style throughout the White House, will cover the cost of the project alongside other donors. 'The White House State ballroom will be a much needed and exquisite addition of approximately 90,000 total square feet of innately designed and carefully crafted space with a seated capacity of 650 people, which is a significant increase from the 200-person seated capacity in the East Room of the White House,' Mrs Leavitt told reporters. The project is expected to be completed before the end of Mr Trump's term in January 2029.

Trump diagnosed with common vein condition after leg swelling
President Donald Trump was recently diagnosed with a common vein condition after he noticed swelling in his legs, the White House announced Thursday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Trump recently underwent testing to investigate the swelling — including diagnostic vascular studies and an ultrasound of his legs — which revealed he has chronic venous insufficiency. The condition, which affects about 1 in 20 adults, is the result of blood not efficiently returning from the legs to the heart, often as a result of damaged valves in the veins. The health update follows a spate of online speculation about Trump's swollen ankles and bruises on his hands. Leavitt said Trump, 79, shows no signs of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease, which can be complications of chronic venous insufficiency. She added that he also underwent thorough laboratory testing, which revealed results within normal limits, as well as an echocardiogram that showed 'normal cardiac structure and function.' 'No signs of heart failure, renal impairment or systemic illness were identified,' she said. Leavitt, who noted that the president remains in excellent health and is experiencing 'no discomfort,' said that bruising on the back of Trump's hand was also evaluated and determined to be minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which the president takes as part of his ongoing cardiac care.
