Section III titles on the line as first-round games begin Tuesday
CENTRAL NEW YORK (WUTR/WFXV?WPNY) — After several Memorial Day play-in games on Monday, the Section III Baseball Tournament begins in earnest on Tuesday. Looking to defend their Section III title will be Class D's Oriskany and Class B's Little Falls. The Skyhawks made it all the way to the state final last year before being shut out in the state final against Arkport-Canaseraga. The Mounties made it to the state semi-finals before losing to Section II's Taconic Hills. The Skyhawks only suffered one loss this season by one run to Waterville on April 11. That earned them the top seed and a bye to the second round, where they will face the winner of an all-local matchup between New York Mills and Hamilton. That quarterfinal game will be played on Thursday, May 29 at 4:30 in Oriskany. Little Falls earned the number five seed in Class B, going 11-5 this year. They suffered two losses to Oriskany this season, as well as a state quarterfinal rematch with Oneonta — which they lost 8-2. They finished out the 2025 season on a tear, winning six of their last seven by a combined 92 to 14, including a 24-0 win over Dolgeville and a 23-1 win over Clinton. The Mounties will face off with 12th seeded Mount Markham, whom they defeated 9-8 on April 23. The Mounties and Mustangs will face off at 6 pm on Tuesday, May 27. In Class AAA, Proctor was dominant this season despite going 1-2 to start. Six of the Raiders' 11 wins this season were double-digit wins, including wins over Watertown and Oneida where they scored more than 20 runs. That 11-5 record gave Proctor the number-two seed in the tournament, and will host a game on Tuesday against Syracuse. First pitch in that game is set for 5 pm in Utica. In Class AA, Whitesboro's only loss within their class came on May 19 in a 2-1 loss at Oswego — their other two losses came to Class A top seed Jamesville-DeWitt and AAA's Proctor. Luke Slatton's Whitesboro squad have torn through the Tri-Valley League, going 4-1 and taking the Colonial Division, with a 5-1 record at home. They will host seventh-seeded Watertown, who broke a nine-game winless streak — with one tie — on the last day of the season with a 3-2 win over Indian River. First pitch on Tuesday between Whitesboro and the Cyclones is set for 4:30 pm in Whitesboro. In Class A, New Hartford earned the number two seed, thanks to winning all eight of their games at Don Edick Field. The Spartans won their last six games — four of those at home — including a 2-1 over Class AAA Proctor on May 19. An 8-0 record at home was not enough to come home with the Tri-Valley Colonial title, which went to Whitesboro thanks to a 2-2 record in the division. It was, however, good enough to earn New Hartford a bye into the quarterfinal round, where they will face the winner of Tuesday afternoon's game between Central Valley Academy and Carthage. First pitch in Ilion is set for 7 pm. In Class C, Frankfort-Schuyler started out the season 4-3 before racking up six straight wins to earn the class' fifth seed. During their six-game winning streak, the Maroon Knights scored more than ten runs in four of them, including a 14-5 win over fellow playoff team Herkimer. Their streak was snapped on the last day of the season with a 10-5 loss to Sauquoit Valley, thanks to a six-run first inning. That loss earned the Maroon Knights a rematch with the 12th-seeded Red Hawks at Ferraro Field on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 4:30 pm. 21 local teams moving on to Section III softball tournament
SYRACUSE, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Section III softball reached the end of its season on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, the section convened its seeding meeting to see who would continue on the road to a banner. In all, 21 local teams over all six classes will be continuing their seasons for at least one more game. Three local teams also received top seeds in their respective classes after the section's seeding meeting on Wednesday, May 21. The top two classes — Class AAA and AA — each had one local entrant, with 11-2 Whitesboro picking up the top seed in Class AA. Despite six cancelled games across the season, Whitesboro finished winning five of their last six, their only loss coming against fellow top seed New Hartford. Led by junior pitcher Addison Cook and sophomore infielder Emma Zyskowski, Whitesboro racked up four shutouts — all of them double-digit victories. Whitesboro earned a bye into the Class AA semifinals, where they will await the winner of the first round game on Saturday between Central Square and Oswego. In Class AAA, despite a 6-4 record to begin the month of May — which included losses to New Hartford and Fayetteville-Manlius, the Rome Free Academy Black Knights came roaring back into the playoff picture, winning five of their last six games by a combined score of 59-16. Their only loss came to Class AA top seed Whitesboro on Tuesday, May 20 by just one run. RFA is led by junior Haylee Bostwick, who is tied with fellow junior Madison Safin and senior Alexa Thompson in extra-base hits — all of them have seven. The Black Knights will play those same Hornets from Fayetteville-Manlius on Saturday, May 24 at Onondaga Community College. First pitch is set for 1:30 pm. The New Hartford Spartans picked up the top seed in Class A, despite being two and a half games behind 13-3 Camden in the standings. The Spartans did not start too well, however, splitting a Class AA series with Proctor and RFA and finishing 1-2 on a road trip to Myrtle Beach. Nobody has been able to stop New Hartford in the last week of the season, though: the Spartans went 3-0 over their last three games, outscoring Proctor, VVS, and Whitesboro by a combined 41-2. Despite their 5-3 finish to the month of May, the Spartans' 11-6 record was good enough to earn them the top seed in the Class A Tournament. They will face the winner of Central Valley Academy and Homer, which will start at 5 pm on Friday in Ilion. New Hartford's game against the winner is scheduled for 1 pm at Accelerate Sports in Whitesboro. In Class B, the top local seed was Utica-Notre Dame, who are looking to avenge their last-inning loss to Marcellus in the final last season. Led by the Trinkaus sisters — Erin, Ella and Maggie — once again, the Jugglers started out the season with four straight wins, but hit a snag when the calendar turned over to May. Notre Dame went 3-4 at one point of the season before ending with a bang. The Jugglers won three of their last four games, including a 23-6 destruction of the last Class B school to make it in — 16th seeded Holland Patent. The Jugglers only played two games against Class B competition, but weren't playing lightweights either: all the rest of their 15-game season were against Class A opponents and above, and even splitting two games with Class AAA Rome Free Academy and Proctor. The Jugglers' performance this season was good enough to earn them the fourth seed and a possible redemption game against top-seeded Marcellus in the semifinals. First, they will have to play the 13th-seeded Adirondack Wildcats on Friday, May 23. The last time these two teams met will have been three years to the day, with the Jugglers coming out on top, 5-1. In Class C, despite an 11-2 season, the Cooperstown Hawkeyes picked up the highest local seed at number seven. The Hawkeyes tore through the Class C competition this season, even though they only having four games under their belt by May 1. When they hit the field, however, the Hawkeyes hit it hard, not scoring less than three runs in any game this season. Junior Katie Crippen led the way for Cooperstown with a scorching .824 batting average. Crippen also led the team in runs (14) and was second on the team in RBIs (11). She also led the team with 15 stolen bases. No other Cooperstown player had more than five. The Hawkeyes will begin their road to Carrier Park on Friday, May 23 when they host 10th seeded Cincinnatus. First pitch is scheduled for 5 PM at Cooperstown High School. In Class D, the Hamilton Emerald Knights earned the top seed in the class with an impressive 13-2 record. Despite two losses in the middle of the season to Class C's Cooperstown and Sauquoit Valley — both of whom made their respective playoffs, the Knights have bookended those with win streaks of six and seven. Both streaks include a 20-run game (against Waterville and New York Mills, respectively) and at least one shutout of 12 runs or more. The Knights are led by sophomore ace Ellie Freeth, who holds a 2.69 ERA and 150 strikeouts this season while only allowing 47 hits and 32 runs. At the plate, senior Adriana Catania leads the team in both batting average (.444), RBIs (19) and home runs (two). Hamilton's performance has earned them a bye, where they will await the winner of Friday's game between eighth-seeded Oriskany and ninth-seeded LaFargeville. First pitch on Saturday in Hamilton is scheduled for 1 pm. Liberty-Eylau advances to the regional finals with victory over Whitesboro
PARIS, TX (KTAL/KMSS) — On Saturday, Liberty-Eylau baseball faced off against Whitesboro in the regional semifinals. Going into the day, the Leopards led the series 1-0 and was eager to sweep the Bearcats. Britain Pipes was first to get the Leopards on the board. An overthrow while stealing second allowed him to get to third, when another overthrow from Whitesboro went into the Liberty-Eylau dugout, advancing Pipes to home. The two teams were caught in a defense stalemate from that moment until the sixth inning, when Whitesboro came up with two runs and took the lead. With the threat of a game three looming, Liberty-Eylau went into the bottom of the sixth ready to do some damage. Arian Taylor got the inning started, with a two RBI single regaining the lead for the Leopards. After that, the Bearcats had no answer on the mound for Liberty-Eylau's momentum and the Leopards went on to claim the 8-2 victory. 'We talked about having a team that can win any type of game, whether it's 10-9 or 1-0. This was a different type of game and we had to find a different way to win it,' head coach Zach Fowler said. 'So, today was kind of grind it out, get a pitcher off the mound, sometimes you gotta go attack guys, but today we let them kind of throw a lot of pitches and attack the next guy.' The Leopards advance to the regional finals round where they will play the winner of Gunter and Hughes Springs. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Jugglers top list of Section III girls' basketball tournament selections
SYRACUSE, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Some may say it's tough at the top, but don't tell the Notre Dame girls' basketball team that. The defending New York State champions earned the top seed in the Section III Class A tournament, which — along with the other five classes — were announced on Thursday, December 20. They were one of two local teams to earn top seeds, and one of 22 local teams to make the tournament. The Jugglers were again led this season by the Trinkaus sisters — Erin and Ella. Ella led the team with just over 25 points per game, while Erin came in at just over 11 points. That helped the Jugglers go undefeated in Section III play, with their only losses coming to Section II's Greenwich and Shaker — both of whom were ranked top ten in the state in their class — and Section V's Aquinas Institute, who is ranked fifth in Class AA. The Jugglers — ranked fifth in Class A — will have over a week off while they await the winner of eighth-seeded Oneida and ninth-ranked Westhill. That game is scheduled for Saturday, February 22 at 4 pm in Oneida. In Class AAA, Proctor has opted out of the tournament and will finish the season at 4-9. That leaves one local team who will be moving on — fourth-seeded Rome Free Academy. The Black Knights had three players who scored almost ten points a game or more this season, and junior Haylee Bostwick led them all, scoring 15 points a game. RFA has only lost five games this season — two of those were to Notre Dame, while another two were to teams out of the section. The Black Knights will host fifth-seeded Bishop Ludden on Thursday, February 27. The winner of that game will travel to Liverpool to face the top-seeded Warriors on Wednesday, March 5. The Warriors' only loss in Section III this season came over the weekend, losing 49-44 to Cicero-North Syracuse. There is only one local representative in the Class A Tournament as well. Whitesboro squeaked into the bracket at 2-15, thanks to winless Watertown and 3-17 Auburn opting out. Whitesboro broke a 14-game losing streak on February 11 with a 60-51 win over Holland Patent. They are led by juniors Maddy Montana and A'Nya Jackson, both of whom are scoring over 15 points per game — no other player is scoring more than three. Whitesboro will be on the road to West Genesee on Wednesday, February 26 to take on the top-seeded Wildcats. Despite a six-game losing streak, the Wildcats were able to win two out of their last three to sneak into the top seed over 14-6 Nottingham. While seven local teams made the Class B Tournament, the Oriskany Skyhawks breezed to the top, claiming the fourth seed. The Skyhawks' only loss this season came to Class C West Canada Valley by five points on December 16th. Since then, Oriskany has been on a tear, not allowing more than 42 points during their 15-game winning streak while scoring no less than 44 and allowing less than 20 in three games. The Skyhawks are led by senior guard Madalynne Enos, who is putting up 15 points and four assists a game. Meanwhile, sophomore guard Jackie Downs has averaged a double-double — 13 points and 10 rebounds — a game. They will be at home for the first round of the Class B tournament, where they will host the 13th-seeded Jordan-Elbridge Eagles. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for Monday, February 24 at 6 pm. The top of the Class C bracket is loaded with local talent, but topping them all is top-seeded, three-loss Hamilton. The Emerald Knights only loss in the section this season came to Class AAA's Bishop Ludden. In between, Hamilton has had winning streaks of five and 11 this season, with their biggest win being a 70-point victory over Morrisville-Eaton on February 11. That allowed them to have the second-best point differential in the section, outscoring their opponents by an average of almost 26 points. Five different Emerald Knights scored over 100 points this season, with junior Logan Langel leading the way. Langel led the team in points, assists and steals this season, while senior Reagan Hope led the team in rebounds in her sixth season on the team. With the first seed, Hamilton will have a few days off, where they will await the winner of 16th-seeded Sauquoit Valley and 17th-seeded Poland. That game is set for Friday, February 21 at 6 pm at Sauquoit Valley. The winner of that game will play on Monday, February 24 at 6 pm at Hamilton. Class D has no local representatives. The only local team — 3-12 Madison — opted out of the tournament. The Class D Tournament will only have seven teams playing, beginning on Wednesday, February 26 with three games.
