‘The View': Whoopi Thinks Trump Is Tanking Economy Because He's ‘Getting Even' With Those Who Didn't Support Him

President Donald Trump and his allies promised a 'golden age' for America when he returned for his second term — but on Wednesday, it was revealed that the U.S. economy contracted for the first time in three years. At this point, 'The View' host Whoopi Goldberg thinks Trump might be tanking the economy intentionally, just to settle some scores. To kick off Thursday's Hot Topics, the ABC hosts dug in on Trump's handling of the economy, with Alyssa Farah Griffin pointing out that he is essentially taking the opposite approach to the economy that he did in his first term. With the cuts he's made, fellow host Joy Behar suggested he's acting like a nihilist, but Whoopi argued it's actually the opposite. 'I think he's angry at the country, because I think he feels that Americans didn't support him, he feels our allies didn't support him, and now he's getting even,' she said. 'That's how — because there's no other reason to do what he is doing. It doesn't make sense to me.' Whoopi then noted that Farah Griffin made smart points in encouraging Trump to work with America's European and Pacific allies in any efforts to 'box out' China, agreeing that there are smarter ways to do it than just implementing sweeping tariffs that we the people will have to endure. When Behar asked why Trump doesn't do that, Farah Griffin reiterated a point she made earlier this month, largely blaming Trump advisor Peter Navarro. Meanwhile, host Sunny Hostin argued that Trump's economic prowess is over-exaggerated and what has happened is not really all that surprising. 'The View' airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC. Sister Act: Beloved Aussie singer Casey Donovan lands first lead role in musical opening at Crown on Saturday

Casey Donovan has landed her first lead role in a musical, and what better character to score than one played by Whoopi Goldberg. Sister Act the Musical opens at Crown Theatre on Saturday night, where it is set to bring the antics of the 1992 film to life on stage. The Sydney-born singer and actress stars as Deloris Van Cartier alongside two other Aussie talents, Genevieve Lemon as Mother Superior and Rhonda Burchmore as Sister Mary Lazarus. 'It's been such a great show to be a lead in. Dolores is such a fun, witty, front-footed character. She really is just this ball of energy,' she said. 'I pay a lot of respect to Whoopi on stage, but the great thing about musical theatre is making a character your own. 'Whoopi's got these beautiful little moments in the movie where she gets that cheeky little smile, or she's up to something, so I've tried to bring that into the musical theatre world.' Donovan said the people of Perth are sure to be up dancing in the aisles with the award-winning musical featuring original music by Tony and eight-time Oscar award-winner Alan Menken (Disney's Aladdin, Enchanted, The Little Mermaid). 'I know a lot of people are like, but it's not the music from the movie. I was like, no, it's so much better,' Donovan said of Menken's work. As the last stop of the tour, Donovan encouraged the people of Perth 'to come along, grab a ticket, have some fun, let your hair down and, let's all raise our voice together'.

‘The View': Whoopi ‘Insulted' by Trump-Backed $5,000 Baby Bonus Because You ‘Can't Even Go to the Hospital' for That

The Trump administration is reportedly mulling over the idea of giving out a $5,000 bonus to incentivize Americans to have more children, and on Wednesday morning's episode of 'The View,' host Whoopi Goldberg scoffed at the offer. Teeing up the topic for the table, the ABC host put on her valley girl accent, something she typically reserves for mocking topics she is uninterested in or bothered by. In this case, it was the latter, and Whoopi immediately explained why. 'I am incredibly insulted by this, because they clearly they don't know how women's bodies work, and they don't know what it costs to raise a child, or just have a child!' she said. '$5,000? I don't know what $5,000 is supposed to do. And it's not even $5,000, because you have to cut it in half because you got to pay taxes on it. So they're offering you $2,500 to have a baby!' Host Alyssa Farah Griffin was quick to caveat that it would depend on your tax bracket, and actually supported the idea herself. As the conversation went on, Farah Griffin suggested that some money was better than no money, which Whoopi promptly pushed back on. 'No, not in this case,' Whoopi shot back immediately. 'No.' From there, the moderator went on to list various programs that have been victims of the Trump administration's funding cuts — specifically programs that are designed to help families. '$1 billion in funding for schools and food banks, to buy food, was cut,' she detailed. 'Withdrew funding for investigating child sexual abuse and internet crimes against children, cut. Fired the entire staff running a program to help low income households pay their heating and cooling bills. Now, these families already exist!' 'If you want people to have children, you have to not scare them by cutting all these programs that they may need,' she added. As the discussion came to a close, Whoopi once again noted how insulting the actual number is, pointing out that, in most cases, that wouldn't even make a dent in healthcare bills. 'I am insulted by that amount, because you can't even go to the hospital for $5,000 for goodness sakes,' she said. 'The View' airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET. ‘The View': Whoopi Promises to Give Chuck Schumer a Blunt ‘What the Hell?' Over Voting for GOP Spending Bill

Following House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's vote to advance a GOP spending bill, in which he broke from most House and Senate Democrats, 'The View' host Whoopi Goldberg vowed on Monday morning that she would get blunt with him and ask: 'What the hell?' Schumer's handling of the situation was met with sharp criticism both from the party itself and voters, and split the hosts of the ABC talk show on Monday morning. But, when it came time for Whoopi to offer her opinion, she admitted that she is withholding judgement until she speaks to Schumer directly, as he is set to be a guest on 'The View' on Tuesday. 'Because I want to ask him, right when he's sitting there, 'Please explain this and why you think this was the better choice,'' she said. 'Because there was no great choice here. So I want to hear why he thought he was doing was the better thing to do.' Whoopi noted that she would really prefer if Democrats as a party would own up to being 'boring' and focus on helping people. 'I want Democrats to tell the people 'Listen, we are boring. We are not cute, we are not funny, we are not quippy. All we know how to do is get stuff done. We don't know how to hang with the guys that like to make the quippy things and give names. This is what we know how to do. We know how to take care of what we are supposed to take care of, what you have told us you want,'' she said. 'That's what I want them to do. So, when Chuck gets here tomorrow, we can all say to him, 'Hey, what the hell? Why? Because you freaked out everybody. Explain yourself,'' she added. The host noted that 'it's very rare' for the talk show to get a guest immediately after something major has happened with them, as is the case with Schumer, so she's excited at the timing. 'Usually they have enough time to decide that we are not the place they want to come. But Chuck does not have that much time,' she said with a laugh. 'So we are going to get him tomorrow and we can talk to him.' At that, host Ana Navarro chimed in, noting that Schumer is promoting his new book, but Whoopi reassured viewers that 'the book is really not the focal thing.' That said, while 'The View' was airing on Monday morning, Schumer did indeed postpone scheduled book tour events, including stops in New York. As of this writing, Schumer was still scheduled for 'The View' on Tuesday. A spokesperson for 'The View' did not immediately respond to TheWrap's inquiry on whether Schumer had canceled on the show. 'The View' airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC. The post 'The View': Whoopi Promises to Give Chuck Schumer a Blunt 'What the Hell?' Over Voting for GOP Spending Bill appeared first on TheWrap.
