Showers and storms stick around
Showers and storms this morning are lining up with a cold front. Some will be strong to severe to start the day. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch will be in effect until 10am for southern portions of the area. Damaging wind gusts and large hail are the main threats. With a constant flow of moisture into the southeast corner of the area expected, this has prompted a Flood Watch for Kay County in Oklahoma and Chautauqua County. It will be in effect until 7am Thursday. Even after the Severe Thunderstorm Watch expires there will still be some showers and storms that impact areas around and east of the Kansas Turnpike. The front will make a northerly push back into the Sunflower State by tomorrow, keeping skies unsettled into Wednesday. We will once again need to keep an eye on the Southeast corner of the area Wednesday. This is where an isolated strong to severe storm will be possible. Some new spotty storms will develop late in the day farther west. Shower and storm coverage will remain spotty through Thursday. So far, severe weather is not expected on Thursday. Temperatures turn noticeably cooler today now that most of us are behind the cold front. We will be quick to return to the 70s and that is where we will stay through the rest of the week. Friday is not looking as active but showers and storms will be around over the weekend. Above average warmth, chances for moisture lacking
There are not as many Freeze Alerts this morning but a few of our counties to the northeast will be under a Freeze Warning until 8am. Even though most of us are chilly in the 30s this morning, most of us are also above freezing. We have more sunshine and warmth on the way. Highs will be in the 70s and 80s. Winds will be stronger today too and reach 20 to 25 mph. Storm Tracker Satellite and Radar will continue to be pretty quiet over the coming days, at least for our area. Since we are not expecting much moisture we will see wildfire concerns begin to creep back into the area from the northwest. There will be a small chance for rain mainly to the north this evening and through the night as winds shift out of the north. Any rain will be light and spotty. Temperatures during the night will not be as chilly and everyone will be well above freezing. After another warm and breezy afternoon Wednesday, there will be one more opportunity for rainfall. A few thunderstorms will be possible to the northeast but most of this activity will miss us. There will be a 10% chance for rain in the rest of the area. The rest of the week will be dry and fire concerns to the northwest will need to continue to be monitored. The weekend will be gusty and warm with widespread highs in the 80s by Sunday. Skies look to stay dry into early next week. KSN Storm Track 3 Forecast from Meteorologist Ronelle Williams: Wichita:Today: Mostly sunny, windy. Storm Track 3 Forecast: Storms bring strong wind, hail, and tornadoes tonight
We are monitoring the potential for severe storms this evening. An Enhanced Risk is in place for a large portion of the Sunflower State, with all forms of severe weather possible. Temperatures will climb this afternoon ahead of the approaching boundary with highs in the 70s and 80s. Strong southerly winds will help to pull in this warmth and also to pull moisture into the region. Wind Advisories are in place through 1 AM as gusts up to 50 MPH are possible. Warm and windy conditions also lead to fire weather concerns. Fire Weather Warnings are in place for western Kansas through 10 PM tonight. Storms will begin to bubble up after 6 PM this evening as the approaching cold front collides with the warm, unstable airmass over central Kansas. We will also be watching for the development of supercell thunderstorms out ahead of the main line. Any supercell that forms will have the potential to produce damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes. Activity will then unzip along the cold front with a strong line of storms quickly tracking east. This will bring strong straight line winds to the region with pockets of heavy rain and hail. A spin up tornado or two along this line will also be possible. Storms will finally exit the region early Wednesday morning. We have a brief moment of calm weather on Wednesday before an unsettled pattern arrives for the second half of the week. This round of rainfall will bring beneficial, widespread moisture to the region. Showers will return on Thursday with daily rain chances through the weekend. KSN Storm Track 3 Forecast from Meteorologist Lucy Doll: Wichita:Today: Mostly cloudy, windy. 40% chance of thunderstorms. Severe weather threat Tuesday evening
Today is a Weather Aware Day. Strong to severe storms will be possible later this evening and into the overnight. All forms of severe weather will be possible. Please be sure that you have more than one way to receive weather alerts and make sure that your safe place is ready to be used. Our morning hours will not be active and things will stay that way into the early part of the afternoon. Afternoon high temperatures will range from the upper 60s to the low 80s. Winds will be gusty today. Gusts could reach 45 to 50 mph which has prompted a Wind Advisory. Due to the wind, warm, and mainly dry conditions before storms get going, Fire Weather Warnings will be in effect between 1pm and 8pm As a cold front moves in, a few showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop as early as 4pm or 5pm. The chance for storms will rise as we go through the evening. We will still need to be weather aware after midnight. Storms will last into the overnight as the cold front tracks east. We will be in the clear by sunrise Wednesday. The chance for strong to severe storms will shift east during the middle of the week. We will continue to be unsettled as rain moves in from the south Wednesday night into Thursday. The latter half of the week will be cooler too with rain chances lasting through the weekend. Warmth sticks around, unsettled skies late in the week
A few light raindrops have been streaming into the area in addition to some patchy cloud cover. As far as the morning commute goes, this is of little concern. However, as we go through the rest of the morning we will continue to have a chance for a sprinkle or a light shower. Especially in South Central Kansas after daybreak. Keep in mind that most of us will stay dry. The day ahead will be another warm one with high temperatures reaching the 70s. After sundown there will be another weak wave that moves through and will have the potential to spark another small batch of sprinkles or light showers. Any rain during the night will be gone by the time the sun is up Wednesday. Rain chances will remain low through the rest of the week but we may not stay completely dry. A thunderstorm or two will be possible late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The best chance will be in Central Kansas. Rain and thunderstorm chances will rise and peak over the weekend. So far, timing looks to be Saturday night into Sunday morning. Temperatures by the end of the weekend will be cooler but also still near the norm. Next week starts dry but there will be occasional waves of moisture nearby, something we need in order to help ease drought and grassfire concerns.
