2 Rare Red Pandas Born at Montana Zoo — Here's When the Public Will Be Able to See Them

"If you're wondering what you missed at last night's A Wild Affair, we'd tell you it was just your typical night ... but we'd be lying," the zoo wrote on Instagram. "Last night we made what might be our biggest announcement in a while — Pabu and Pavitra have welcomed their very first cubs!" The zoo went on to share that the two cubs, now 6 weeks old, are developing their signature red and black coats and opening their eyes. Red pandas are born completely blind and use a high-pitched whistle sound to communicate with their mother until their sight develops. "The cubs will remain in their den until Pavitra feels comfortable allowing them to explore — likely around three months of age. Public viewing may begin at that time, but we will continue to share updates as they grow," the zoo added. The Instagram post featured photos of each of the tiny cubs being held by a zoo worker, along with a snapshot of the proud parents. According to the zoo's website, 5-year-old Pabu was born at the Oregon Zoo in June 2020 and later moved to ZooMontana with his mother, Mei Mei, in March 2021. He is popular with visitors and has been given the nicknames 'The Prince of Pounce' and 'Prince of Rascality." Two-year-old Pavitra was born at the San Diego Zoo in June 2023, and brought to ZooMontana as a partner for Pabu in 2024. The zoo said she is known for her "strong personality" and penchant for climbing. ZooMontana was home to another red panda, a male named Duli. However, the animal sadly had to be euthanized, just days after his 14th birthday last month "due to age-related complications and quality of life concerns, the zoo announced on Instagram on July 15. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), red pandas are an endangered species, with fewer than 10,000 remaining in the wild.
