'Big-game players': Calgary Wild FC add Kathryn Harvey, Jorian Baucom to bolster offence
Calgary Wild FC have bolstered their offence by adding Kathryn Harvey and Jorian Baucom to the roster. Article content Harvey (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Baucom (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who will provide additional depth to the Northern Super League club's attack, both joined their new squad for the first time at practice on Thursday. 'Kathryn and Jorian are two big additions to our club. They are big-game players who bring additional energy, drive and a wealth of international experience to our club,' said Wild FC sporting director Alix Bruch. 'They are creative in the attack and will bring speed and additional strength to our offence as we advance into the second half of our season.' Harvey, who played varsity lacrosse with LIU Brooklyn before transferring to Trinity Western University, was twice named to both the CanWest All-Second Team and USports Championship All-Star Team. She capped her varsity career finishing in the top five for game-winning goals. Harvey's scoring touch continued in the professional ranks where she was the top scorer for Denmark's Division 1 team. She also played for Fatih Vatan S.K. of the Turkish Women's Football Super League before signing with Melbourne City in the Australian A-League Women, where she tallied two goals in her debut. 'I'm really excited to play for the Wild FC, not only because it's my first time playing professionally in my home country, but also because of the team's culture and the culture of the organization as a whole,' said Harvey. 'It was great to be getting warm, welcoming messages from the team even before I arrived in Calgary so I already felt like I was part of the group.' Baucom was also attracted to the culture that has been created within Alberta's first professional women's sports team and is ready to soar with the Wild FC. 'I immediately knew this was an environment I wanted to be a part of — from the community and fan base to the facilities and stadium,' said Baucom, who played college soccer at Louisiana State University (2014-17) and University of Colorado Boulder (2017-18). 'I felt the passion and genuineness behind this club after speaking with Lydia (Bedford, the head coach) and Alix, and their desire to want to grow this into something special. I hope I can come in, make an impact and continue to move the club in the right direction.' Baucom is no stranger to playing for newly created sides. She comes to the Wild FC from DC Power FC, where she was the first player signing in the USL Super League. Her name is also in the history books as the first scorer in DC Power history. Baucom has had a strong professional career while playing for the Houston Dash (National Women's Soccer League) before signing with AC Sparta Prague (Czech Women's First League), and MSV Duisburg. She suited up in the National Women's Soccer League with short stints at Racing Louisville (2021) and the North Carolina Courage. Baucom headed to Portugal to play for SF Damaiense. She notched 27 goals across the 2023-24 season while suiting up for Hibernian in Scotland before her most recent stop in the United States with Fort Lauderdale United FC. Both newcomers were attracted to the Calgary Wild FC's commitment to community, ensuring all feel welcome at McMahon Stadium while also working equally hard to grow the game throughout Alberta.

Calgary Wild FC struggles 'to get a foothold' at home, gets blanked by Ottawa Rapid FC
Article content Ottawa Rapid FC scored early and never looked back, blanking Calgary Wild FC 3-0 in front of their home crowd at McMahon Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Article content Ottawa's trio of tallies in the Northern Super League match came from two set pieces and one that ricocheted off Wild FC goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec. 'I think that while the set pieces dictated the score of the game, they didn't dictate the game,' said Wild FC head coach Lydia Bedford. 'We are obviously really upset to concede two set pieces, but our play didn't create that much, and they did dictate the tempo of the game.' Florence Belzille got the visitors on the board first, scoring her first goal in her first match at the 12-minute mark. Forward Delaney Bale Pridham doubled things up before halftime when she became the first NSL player to reach the 10-goal mark. 'We really struggled to get a foothold. I think the players kept fighting which is important. They tried to solve problems at the half, but just were less successful, and too far off it on the whole today.' Ottawa put the game away with an own-goal three minutes into the second half.

'A hard one for us': Calgary Wild FC battle but fall to Halifax Tides FC
Article content Halifax Tides FC had one extra shot on target, which was enough to top visiting Calgary Wild FC 1-0 in a spirited affair on a hot and humid Monday night at Wanderers Grounds stadium. Article content Halifax's ace midfielder, Megumi Nakamura, chipped one past Wild FC goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec at the 36-minute mark of the opening half and the Tides held on for their second Northern Super League victory of the season. Article content Article content 'It was a hard one for us tonight. I think overall the team played with great spirit, and togetherness,' said Wild FC head coach Lydia Bedford. 'It could have quite easily finished as a nil-nil draw, but we were quite unfortunate to concede on the second phase of a set piece which we will go away and reflect on.' Article content Article content The first match following a two-week international break combined with a banged-up Calgary roster made it difficult for the Wild Roses to mount an offensive attack. Article content 'Right now, we are riding a little patch where player availability is a struggle for us. You saw tonight that we had five on the bench and four of them were senior players,' said Bedford. 'We are trying to make sure the players who are unavailable are getting back to fitness, but in the meantime, we have to stick together and be competitive. Overall, the team can be pleased that we didn't concede an open play goal, but we need more to try and make sure that we can not only be defensively sound but that we can also catch teams.' Article content Article content Using nearly every player available to them in hopes of having fresh legs on the pitch, Wild FC controlled possession for 54 per cent of the time, but most of it was at the back end. Article content 'I feel like we look after the ball at the back end, but it is just that final pass and final shot that we seem to be lacking on,' said Bedford. 'We will keep working on it and the players will keep giving everything. Hopefully it will click for us over the next couple of weeks.' Article content Playing in front of their parents and grandparents who call Nova Scotia home, the feisty teenage Stewart twins were poised to find a breakthrough moment in front of the boisterous Bluenose crowd. Article content 'I think we stuck together well as a team and kept trying to fight through it tonight,' said Taegan Stewart, who started the match. 'We had one or two chances that we could have put in the back of the net, but I think we were just one second slow in the movement.'

'We had one or two chances that we could have put in the back of the net, but I think we were just one second slow in the movement.' Putting the pressure on late in the match in hopes of trying to convert a shot on target, the Wild FC weren't able to push through the force of the Tides and dropped to a 3-5-2 record. 'It's a tradeoff (late in the game). You can push for more and end up conceding one. It was good that when we were pushing, we didn't get hurt but now it's just needing that final pass in those final moments,' said Bedford. 'I think we showed that we can be resilient tonight but just didn't have enough quality in front of the goal. We might have to keep tweaking the way we are playing to create more chances.' Calgary Wild FC will have a short week to adjust their plan of attack. They will ride into McMahon Stadium during Stampede week for a home match against the Vancouver Rise FC on Saturday.

Calgary's Wild FC downs Halifax Tides 3-2 in Northern Super League
A soccer ball with the Northern Super League logo sits on a table before a league news conference on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ethan Cairns) CALGARY — Calgary's Wild FC held off the Halifax Tides 3-2 on Thursday in the Northern Super League. Wild (3-2-2) scored three first-half goals before the winless Tides (0-5-1) countered with two late in the second. Calgary extended its undefeated run to four straight games with two wins and two draws in that span. Wild FC defeated the Tides 4-1 in Halifax on April 26 for Calgary's first NSL victory, and a week after the six-team NSL launched with the Vancouver Rise blanking Calgary 1-0. 'It was a similar story to the last time we played Halifax. We put the game to bed early and then we let them get a bit of momentum at the start of the second half, but this one maybe even more so,' said Wild coach Lydia Bedford. 'I give full credit to them. This league is very competitive. They showed that tonight putting two away in the second half.' The Wild's Taegan Stewart scored her first career NSL goal when the 17-year-old Calgarian drilled a right-foot shot from the centre box home in first-half extra time. 'It's been coming for a while. I had a couple of chances over the last couple of matches, but third time is a charm,' Stewart said. 'It was really exciting and now I'm wanting more.' She celebrated her first goal by hopping on the back of forward Christie Gray's back for a run down McMahon Stadium's pitch. Taegan's twin sister and Wild teammate Keelyn attended their high school graduation ceremony in the afternoon before heading to the pitch in the evening. 'It was a long, busy day – a pretty exciting day having graduated high school – but we made it work,' said Keelyn. 'It was even more exciting that we finally got to share the field together, so was a perfect way to end things off for us.' Added Bedford: 'T had her first start in the first Halifax game and for Kee, she has been pushing and pushing, knocking on my door for when those minutes are going to come. I'm just so proud of them both. To be 17 and to be stepping on the pitch as well as they are just shows all the work they have put in.' Jenaya Robertson of Delta, B.C., made it 2-0 for the hosts with a left-footed strike in the 41st minute. Australian defender Ally Green got Calgary's first-half scoring burst underway in the 23rd minute. Wild goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec's bid for a third clean sheet in four games was foiled when Haligonian Saorla Miller and Japanese striker Megumi Nakamura scored in the 72nd and 76th minutes respectively for the Tides. Bukovec and Halifax keeper Erin McLeod, who has appeared in 119 games for the Canadian women's team, each made one save. Bukovec was the busier of the two women with 68 touches to McLeod's 36. Wild FC's next game is against AFC Toronto in Calgary on June 14. The Tides host Ottawa Rapid FC on June 10. Toronto versus Ottawa and Vancouver facing Montreal Roses FC is Saturday's NSL match lineup. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 5, 2025.
