Jay Jones launches first general election ad buy in Virginia AG race

Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for Virginia attorney general, rolled out his first television ad of the general election cycle on Thursday. The ad, which was first seen by The Hill, is a part of a six-figure ad buy going up across Virginia. The thirty-second spot features Norfolk, Va. Sheriff Joe Baron (D), Prince William County Prosecutor Amy Ashworth (D) and Newport News Sheriff Gabe Morgan (D) vouching for Jones's record on public safety and law and order from his time as assistant attorney general and a former Virginia state delegate. Jones is seeking to oust incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares (R), an ally of President Trump, in the general election. Most recent polls show Jones leading Miyares. A poll released last month by the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, showed Jones leading Miyares 47 percent to 38 percent. In Virginia, the governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general are elected separately. The last time Virginians voted to split a ticket was in 2005, when now-Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) was elected governor and Republican Bill Bolling won the lieutenant governor's race. However, Miyares stands to be a formidable opponent, with many Virginia Republicans arguing that the attorney general is the strongest part of the Republican ticket. According to the Virginia Public Access Project, Miyares has raised over $4,000 more than Jones in fundraising. On Wednesday, Republican State Leadership Committee PAC and the Republican Attorneys General Association teamed up with Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin's (R) Secure Your Vote initiative to launch a seven-figure investment to turn out voters in the attorneys general race and House of Delegates voters.

Spanberger leads Earle-Sears in Virginia: DDHQ average

Former Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) leads Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) in the state's gubernatorial race, according to the latest polling average from Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ). Spanberger leads with an average of 45.2 percent support, while Earle-Sears trails with an average of 36 percent support. The latest averages remain unchanged from last month. The most recent poll of the governor's race released last month by the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University showed Spanberger leading Earle-Sears with 49 percent support to the lieutenant governor's 37 percent among registered voters in the state. According to Decision Desk HQ, Earle-Sears has not led in a single poll this year. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the race as 'lean Democratic.' Virginia Republicans have raised red flags about their chances in the state's gubernatorial race, pointing to Earle-Sears significantly trailing Spanberger in fundraising and polls. Last month, Spanberger also reported a massive second-quarter fundraising haul of $10.7 million. Earle-Sears's campaign announced that Thursday marked its 'best single fundraising day' since its launch in September, but it did not publicly disclose how much it had raised. According to the latest campaign finance data from the Virginia Public Access Project, Spanberger has raised $27 million since she jumped into the race in November 2023 and has more than $15 million in the bank. Earle-Sears has raised more than $11 million since launching her campaign and has more than $4 million cash on hand.

Spanberger leads Virginia governor's race by 12 points: Survey

Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.) holds a double-digit lead over Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) in the state's gubernatorial race, according to a poll released on Wednesday. The survey, conducted by the Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, showed Spanberger leading Earle-Sears 49 percent to 37 percent among registered voters in the state. The latest results mark an uptick in support for Spanberger from the last poll, which showed her leading Earle-Sears 45 percent to 35 percent. The poll's results out of the lieutenant gubernatorial race and the attorney general race mirrored the governor's race results. In the lieutenant governor's race, state Sen Ghazala Hashmi (D) leads conservative talk show host John Reid 46 to 36 percent, while in the attorney general race former Del. Jay Jones (D) leads current Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares 47 to 38 percent. However, roughly half of Independents in all three matchups said they were undecided. Most polling out of the governor's race so far shows Spanberger with an advantage over Earle-Sears. A Roanoke College survey released in May showed Spanberger with a wide 43 percent to 26 percent lead over Earle-Sears, with 28 percent of voters saying they were undecided. However, another May poll released by the business group Virginia FREE showed Spanberger leading by 4 percentage points. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates the race as lean Democratic. Earle-Sears has sought to tout her work during Gov. Glenn Youngkin's administration on the campaign trail. While the governor has enjoyed high approval ratings throughout his nearly four years in office, the VCU poll released on Wednesday showed a slight decline in support. Forty-nine percent of respondents polled said they approved of Youngkin's job as governor down from 51 percent in December. Thirty-nine percent said they disapproved of Youngkin's job up one point from December. The Virginia Commonwealth University poll was conducted June 19 through July 3 among 809 Virginia adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.16 percentage points.
