Saints suffer season-ending injury blow
The post Saints suffer season-ending injury blow appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New Orleans Saints are bringing in a lot of new faces this campaign, to try and turn around the franchise. New Orleans is going to have to play this season though without a key offensive lineman. Center Will Clapp is out for the year with a foot injury, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Clapp needs surgery for the injury. He got hurt in the team's preseason game against the L.A. Chargers on August 10. 'He's awaiting final confirmation from testing results. A tough blow for a player who was set to be a key depth option on the interior,' Schultz posted to X, formerly Twitter. This is definitely bad news for a Saints team that's breaking in a new quarterback. Rookie Tyler Shough is expected to take a lot of snaps this season due to an injury to former quarterback Derek Carr. Saints face a tough challenge in 2025 The Saints are trying to bounce back after a rough 2024 campaign that saw New Orleans win just five games. Their coach Dennis Allen was fired midway through the season. New Orleans now has a new head coach in Kellen Moore, who will look to get the squad back to the NFL Playoffs. Things aren't going well for the Saints and Moore so far. New Orleans lost Carr to an injury, who then decided to retire from the NFL. Now the Saints are going to have to play with a depleted offensive line. It's going to take work to get the Saints offense going this season. The Saints have a rookie in Shough, who they decided to take in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Shough is a journeyman quarterback who has played for several colleges, including Texas Tech. He has also dealt with injuries as a college quarterback. New Orleans lost their first NFL preseason game to the Los Angeles Chargers, 27-13. In that contest, Shough completed 15 passes in 22 attempts. He posted 165 passing yards as well as a touchdown and an interception. Saints coach Moore says his quarterback is showing progress. 'He felt under control. I thought he managed the situations really, really well,' Moore said postgame after the Chargers contest. New Orleans is also using Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener at quarterback. All three of the squad's play callers got some snaps in the Chargers game. The Saints next play the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 17 in another preseason game. Saints C Will Clapp (foot) placed on season-ending injured reserve
New Orleans Saints center Will Clapp has been placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a foot injury suffered in the team's first preseason game. Clapp was carted off the field just a few plays into the Saints' preseason opener against the Chargers on Sunday. NFL Network reported Tuesday that he suffered a Lisfranc injury in his right foot which will require season-ending surgery. He was a strong candidate to serve as the team's backup center behind Erik McCoy, who has appeared in 81 games for the Saints over the last six seasons. Clapp, a seventh-round draft pick by the Saints in 2018, has appeared in 66 games over his seven-year NFL career. He returned to New Orleans this offseason after appearing in 31 games with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022-23 and appearing in one game last season for the Buffalo Bills. -Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Will Clapp injury update: Saints fans get final verdict; teammates disappointed
New Orleans Saints' center Will Clapp has been ruled out for this season thanks to an injury he suffered during Sunday's (August 10) preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Will Clapp will miss the entire 2025 NFL season with a foot injury.(Instagram/ Will Clapp) 'Will Clapp suffered a foot injury during yesterday's game and is going to miss significant time, I'm told. Clapp came in this offseason to provide high-quality depth on the offensive line. This opens the door for guys like rookie Torricelli Simpkins to make a mark,' Nick Underhill of wrote on social media. How will this affect the Saints? USA Today reports that Clapp injured his foot during the first play. Despite his attempts to continue going out, he was unable to carry forward with the game. Starting guard Trevor Penning also left the game with an injury, although few particulars have been released about his condition ever since. 'We learned last year just how valuable quality depth at center can be. Pro Bowl starter Erik McCoy snapped the ball on a majority of snaps in five games; New Orleans averaged 31.8 points per game and went 4-1. In the twelve games he couldn't dress for, or had to exit early on, the team managed just 14.9 points per game and went 1-11. Clapp was signed as an insurance policy for McCoy. But it doesn't sound like he'll be able to see it through,' explains John Sigler of USA Today. Also Read: NFL preseason riddled with injuries. Here are latest updates - from Rondale Moore to Jordan Love Who could replace Will Clapp? Although no official statement has been issued in this matter, given Torricelli Simpkins III's performance in the game, he could be considered a viable alternative. With McCoy inactive and Clapp injured, he managed to snap the ball 67 times. 'He did really well in pass protection (allowing just one pressure, a hurry, on 54 reps) but could improve as a run blocker. That's an area he's performed better at training camp, showing off some nice movement skills for a guy his size, so maybe he can translate it to a real game with more opportunities,' adds Sigler. 'An outside free agent signing is possible, but unlikely; the Saints recently brought back Shane Lemieux, who also has experience at center.' Clapp, who played 34 games for the Saints from 2018-21, re-joined the team in the offseason after two seasons with the Chargers and one with the Bills. He has played 66 games with 22 starts in his career, as reported by NBC Sports.

Kellen Moore receives first massive blow as head Coach of New Orleans Saints
Kellen Moore receives first massive blow as head Coach of New Orleans Saints originally appeared on The Sporting News It certainly was not the dream start first-year head coach Kellen Moore wanted. Taking over for the fired Dennis Allen, he took his first major loss on Tuesday. The New Orleans Saints have been dealt a devastating setback just weeks before the regular season kicks off. Veteran center Will Clapp, a New Orleans native and former LSU standout, has been ruled out for the entire 2025 season after suffering a severe foot injury that requires surgery. The injury occurred early in Sunday's preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, with Clapp being carted off during the Saints' first offensive series. Will Clapp to miss the entire 2025 season This loss is especially painful for the Saints' offensive line depth. Clapp was stepping in for starting center Erik McCoy, who was already dealing with his own injury issues. Now, the Saints must rely on unproven depth, with undrafted rookie Torricelli Simpkins thrust into the role. For a team looking to bounce back from recent struggles, losing an experienced interior lineman is a major obstacle, especially given the importance of offensive line continuity in both protecting the quarterback and establishing the run game. MORE: Kyle Shanahan gives update on a key offensive star injury A team already facing an uphill battle The Saints' 2024 season was one of inconsistency and frustration. Despite boasting a defense that kept them in most games, the offense often sputtered, plagued by injuries, shaky pass protection, and an inability to find rhythm in the run game. The team finished outside of playoff contention, leaving fans and analysts wondering if the current roster makeup was enough to compete in the NFC South. Now, heading into 2025, optimism has taken another hit. Training camp injuries are always tough, but losing a veteran center, someone familiar with the playbook, protections, and snap cadence, means the Saints' offense will have to make adjustments on the fly. In a division where every win will matter, the margin for error is now even thinner. Unless their young replacements can step up quickly, this could be the kind of preseason blow that lingers well into the regular season. Saints center Will Clapp suffers serious foot injury and will miss significant time, per reports
New Orleans Saints center Will Clapp was injured and carted off just minutes into Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers. While head coach Kellen Moore did not give any details on the injury after the game, we know now that Clapp has a foot injury that is believed to be season-ending and will require surgery, per a report from Jordan Schultz. The New Orleans native and former LSU Tiger was selected by the Saints in the 7th round (245th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent 4 seasons with Saints before signing with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022. After spending last season with Buffalo Bills, Clapp re-signed with the Saints in March. Clapp started on Sunday against the Chargers in place of Erik McCoy. The injury happened on the Saints' first offensive series of the game. After Clapp was carted off, undrafted rookie Torricelli Simpkins replaced him at center.
