Behind elite pitching and unwavering confidence, Northeastern baseball enters NCAA Tournament as nation's hottest team

'I think it's just all excitement,' said Northeastern's Mike Glavine, who was named CAA Coach of the Year last week for the fifth time. 'That's the beautiful thing about the regionals, you're probably going to run into somebody that's highly ranked, tough to beat ... It's just going to be a great challenge. I think overall, the overwhelming feeling is just excitement.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up There are a few other New England schools in the NCAA Tournament, with Holy Cross, Rhode Island, Fairfield, and Central Connecticut State in the mix, but its Northeastern that has shown the potential to make a serious run. Advertisement The Huskies have dominated behind an elite three-man rotation of Massachusetts natives: Hamilton's Will Jones, Acton's Jordan Gottesman, and Lynn's Aiven Cabral. Northeastern has posted the nation's best ERA (2.92) and WHIP (1.04), each by a wide margin, and the Huskies' 17 shutouts are as many as the next two best teams combined. Advertisement Jones has been the ace in a stunning breakout season for the lefthander, a campaign that has seen his 5.23 ERA in 2024 drop to a miniscule 1.82, second-best in the country. With the stakes raised, Glavine isn't messing with the formula. 'I think that'll be the biggest thing: not changing [anything],' he said. 'We've changed in the past, haven't had success in the regionals for all kinds of reasons — probably all mostly my fault — because of changing and doing things differently. Will Jones will pitch Game 1, he's pitched Game 1 for us all year, and then we'll go from there." The NCAA regionals haven't been kind to Northeastern, which has lost all six games it has played on that stage under Glavine dating to 2018, including unsuccessful runs in 2021 and '23. But when you combine the Huskies' elite pitching with a lineup that scored a conference-leading 7.6 runs per game — anchored by CAA Co-Player of the Year Harrison Feinberg — you've got a team prepared to compete with the big guns on the national stage. '[In 2021 and 2023] I felt confident going into it, and we were just sort of out of gas,' Glavine said. 'This year presents a different feeling of confidence, and so I feel, standing here, this is the most confident team we've had going into a regional. 'Like, why not us? Why can't we do this? Why can't we come out of this regional? There's no reason why we can't.' Amin Touri can be reached at

Northeastern baseball, amid its best season in years, takes on Harvard in Beanpot final — back at Fenway for first time since 2019

Northeastern captured its seventh Beanpot title and first since 2013 with a Northeastern (32-9), under head coach Mike Glavine, has one of Division 1's best pitching staffs. The Huskies rank first in the nation in WHIP (1.09) and shutouts (13), and their team ERA of 3.19 ranks fourth in all of Division 1. Advertisement That success starts with a dominant rotation, headlined by the weekend trio of Will Jones (2.14 ERA), Aiven Cabral (2.59 ERA), and Jordan Gottesman (2.64 ERA). Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Cabral, a junior, grew up in Lynn and earned Central Catholic League Pitcher of the Year honors at St. Mary's, where he was named to the Globe's All-Scholastic Team in back-to-back seasons. With all three pitching at Monmouth this weekend, Northeastern will likely turn to midweek ace Max Gitlin (2.67 ERA) for Tuesday's title tilt. A graduate transfer from Division 3 Clark, Gitlin delivered seven scoreless innings in the Huskies' Advertisement The Huskies aren't just winning with arms. Northeastern's outfield is composed of junior Connecticut natives Cam Maldonado (.373, 11 HRs) and Harrison Feinberg (.366, 13 HRs), along with Franklin's Ryan Gerety. At shortstop, junior Jack Goodman (.347, 10 HRs) has emerged as a star on both sides of the ball. Goodman played four seasons at Medfield, earning Globe player of the year honors his senior year. Bill Decker's Harvard (9-22) is still reeling from sixteen consecutive losses to start the 2025 campaign. Four days after notching its first win, the Crimson rolled past UMass on April 1 in a Colasante and senior utility man George Cooper share the team lead with five home runs apiece. The Crimson look to their offense to inflict damage, as the pitching staff owns an 8.60 ERA. Todd Interdonato's Eagles (21-21) bring a gritty ACC offense to the consolation game, headlined by graduate infielder Patrick Roche (.319), a former Globe All-Scholastic, and junior outfielder Josiah Ragsdale (.921 OPS). A strong offensive showing will be key for BC. The Eagles look to capitalize on a struggling UMass pitching staff, which carries a team ERA in the mid-sevens. Matt Reynolds has demanded more from his Minutemen (11-25-1) at the plate in 2025, but the lineup has sputtered to a .235 team average. UMass will need to apply pressure to the Eagles' pitching staff with men on base when senior infielder Jack Beverly comes to the plate, a bright spot in a bleak offense. Beverly, a two-sport star at Framingham, leads the Minutemen with five home runs and 29 RBIs. Advertisement Max Schwartzberg can be reached at

Little Rock city leaders react after 9 homicides in the month of January

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – There have been nearly 10 homicides in 30 days in Little Rock to start 2025. 'We hadn't had this many coming at this pace in a little while,' Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Will Jones said. Thursday, Jones joined local organizations including Arkansas Stop the Violence, Parents of Murdered Children, and Pain to Purpose to plead for change as 4 people have been killed in the last 3 days. 'We need everybody to come together now and say enough is enough,' Jones said. Little Rock police arrest suspect in deadly Park Plaza Mall shooting On Monday, 47-year-old Cynthia Gregory was shot and killed outside of Park Plaza Mall. 18-year-old Abdelrahmanahmed Sallam is behind bars after being accused of killing Gregory. On the same evening of Staats' murder, officers were called to a scene on Labette Manor where 19-year-old Anthony White was found dead from a shooting. On Thursday, police began investigating a fourth homicide which left a woman dead at the Chenal Place Apartments on Reservoir Road. 'Hopefully this is not a trend that continues,' said Jones. Little Rock police identify man killed in Westbridge Apartments shooting Jones adds that crime is down. According to the police, in 2024 Little Rock saw 37 homicides. Although it may not have felt like it, that's a 41% decrease compared to 2023 which had 63 homicides. But despite the numbers, Jones said the youth of Pulaski County are in a crisis. 'We have teenagers carrying guns, shooting at cars, shooting up houses and killing people. They say it takes a village to raise a child but as these men have said, our village has ignored this problem for way too long,' Jones said. At the press conference, proactive measures were discussed to help get guns out the hands of children. Woman killed in deadly shooting at Reservoir Road apartment complex Rev. Bennie Johnon with Arkansas Stop the Violence asked for 'Governor Sanders to pass bringing in the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms to the city of Little Rock to get these weapons off the street.' Will Jones said 'we're trying to figure out how we look outside the box than just this happens; we go to court and this happens. We've got to figure out a way to get with the community before the problem happens.' In the last decade, the largest number of homicides Little Rock had seen in a year was in 2022 where there were 81. Right now, with 9 in the first month of 2025, the capital city is on pace to shatter that. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
