Farm murders and rural safety take prominence on parliamentary agenda

CAPE TOWN - Farm murders and rural safety were back on the parliamentary agenda on Friday, where parties debated the need for a better response to rural crime to ensure food security. The debate comes not too long after President Cyril Ramaphosa and a South African delegation visited the US to convince the country that there's no targeting of white farmers, saying the farmers are just victims of high crime. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has also used the debate to reiterate its opposition to land expropriation without compensation, saying it threatens investor confidence. DA member of Parliament (MP) and spokesperson Willie Aucamp opened the debate, saying the issue of rural safety cuts to the heart of the country's stability and food security. "For too long, the brutality of farm attacks as well as the effect that it has on food security have been ignored. But, finally, this house has been forced to confront the truth." But the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party's Andile Mngxitama says the commercial agriculture sector is still oppressive towards black people, who he says suffer the most on farms. "The commercial agricultural sector remains the bastion of naked racism and systemic violence against black people. The oppressive relations inherited from the past continue in democratic South Africa."

DA court challenge against employment act will be heard this week

PARLIAMENT - The constitutionality of South Africa's Employment Equity Act will be tested in court this week. The DA is challenging the Employment Equity Amendment Act which came into effect this year. READ: DA responds to anti-transformation accusations It empowers the minister of labour to set numerical targets for different sectors of the economy to ensure equitable representation of historically disadvantaged groups. The DA says the race-based quotes will create more unemployment and harm growth. But earlier President Cyril Ramaphosa defended Equity in his weekly newsletter, pointing out that the majority of top management positions in the private sector are still held by white males. DA spokesperson, Willie Aucamp discussed this with eNCA.

DA and ANC commit to working together as GNU partners

JOHANNESBURG - Following a meeting between feuding Government of National Unity (GNU) partners, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and African National Congress (ANC) have committed to working together. A delegation from both parties met on Friday to discuss issues related to the budget and other recent political developments. Despite being coalition partners, the DA and ANC have recently been on opposite ends on several political issues, leading to concerns over whether a break-up is imminent. However, DA national spokesperson Willie Aucamp said the meeting with the ANC was constructive. "The discussions were forthright and constructive, focusing on the way forward on matters ranging from the budget to a strategy for economic growth. Similar meetings will continue, on a regular basis, as we seek to address the most pressing challenges facing South Africans in the GNU." ANC's national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, said that while the party welcomes the engagements on the budget, it will not compromise on transformation and social and economic justice. "The meeting forms part of the ANC's continued commitment to the principles of dialogue, nation-building, and consultation in addressing the urgent budgetary processes in the national Parliament."

Leaders of South Africa's DA to Meet on Future of ANC Coalition

Leaders of South Africa's Democratic Alliance will meet to discuss its involvement in the nation's coalition government after lawmakers passed a budget framework that second-biggest party opposed. 'The federal executive will meet tonight or tomorrow morning, and we will decide on that,' party spokesman Willie Aucamp said in an interview on Newzroom Afrika. 'We cannot enable the ANC to keep on with the looting,' he said, referring to the African National Congress, the country's largest party.
