Local community comes together ahead of International Transgender Day of Visibility

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Monday marks the International Transgender Day of Visibility. It's an annual event dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness for the discrimination they face. Full Spectrum Community Outreach in Youngstown is raising awareness, too. The nonprofit is dedicated to supporting local members of the LGBTQ+ community. The nonprofit hosted its ninth annual Bowling for Visibility event Sunday night at Westside Bowl to allow members of the community to come together and seek support. 'We need to stand up and be here and be a supportive system for them. That's why the Full Spectrum is here as an LGBT center. We're always going to be here for anyone that is transgender that needs support, and this event is for them,' said Tim Bortner, president of Full Spectrum. The first International Transgender Day of Visibility was held on March 31, 2009. Wilson Corbisello contributed to this report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Volunteers shave heads to raise money for childhood cancer research

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Many people shaved their heads for a good cause on Saturday. Penguin City hosted the St. Baldrick's Shave-a-Thon fundraiser in Youngstown. All the money raised goes to the St. Baldrick's Foundation for childhood cancer research. They've already raised over $50,000. About 75 volunteers signed up to get their heads shaved, all to support children with cancer and to help raise awareness. 'It means a lot. When we started this three years ago, we were just in the corner back there with a few people and now we have the whole building. So it means a lot to us. This is all for the kids,' organizer Jason Cottrill said. St. Baldrick's is the number-one funder of childhood cancer research grants. Wilson Corbisello contributed to this report.
