New Windows 11 Insider Preview Build Adds New Voice Typing and Pen Features

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3941 (KB5055634) to the Beta Channel for users running Windows 11 24H2. This build brings updates, improvements, and fixes. One of the updates is a new profanity filter setting for voice typing, which lets users decide whether spoken profanity is masked with asterisks or transcribed as spoken. This setting can be accessed by opening voice typing with Win + H, selecting the settings icon, and toggling the filter. Another update is called Click to Do, which is available for Copilot+ PCs. If you use a pen with inking support, you can set up the shortcut button to open Click to Do. You can also add the app to the pen menu for easier access. Windows Search has also been improved for Copilot+ PCs. If users are signed into OneDrive with a work or school account, searches in the Windows search box on the taskbar will now only return results for keywords found within the text of cloud files, not photos. The Accessibility flyout in quick settings has also been updated. Assistive technologies are now grouped by vision, hearing, motor, and mobility. This change makes it easier for users to find the right tools. These were the major changes, but this build addresses a number of other issues, such as blank app windows, problems with Windows Hello facial recognition, and touch keyboard bugs. It also resolves issues with Quick Assist for non-admin users and fixes problems where certain apps failed to open due to missing virtual machine components.

Microsoft Copilot Plus PCs to get Recall, Click to Do, more features soon

Microsoft has announced that it will soon roll out three new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered features for its Copilot Plus PCs: Recall, Click to Do, and improved Windows Search. Recall, which initially debuted with the Copilot Plus PC platform, was withdrawn due to security and privacy concerns raised by early testers. It is now set to return alongside additional AI-driven enhancements. Microsoft claims these updates will deliver unmatched AI experiences. Microsoft Copilot Plus PCs: What's new In a blog post, Microsoft confirmed that more AI capabilities are coming to Copilot Plus PCs. The new features include Recall (preview), Click to Do (preview), and improved Windows Search. Recall (Preview) Recall helps users quickly rediscover apps, websites, images or documents by retracing their digital activity. Designed to simplify the process of locating past work or browsing sessions, Recall allows users to scroll through a timeline or search using simple descriptions, reducing retrieval time by up to 70 per cent, according to Microsoft. This feature operates locally on the device, with strong privacy controls in place to ensure data remains secure, encrypted, and never shared with Microsoft or third parties. Click to Do (Preview) Click to Do offers quick, contextual shortcuts for actions such as summarising, rewriting, copying text or editing images directly from the screen. It can be activated by pressing 'Win' + 'Click', swiping right on touchscreens, or using icons in tools like Start and Snipping Tool. This feature streamlines workflows by allowing users to interact with content instantly. Image-related actions are already available, while text actions are initially rolling out to Snapdragon X series devices, with support for AMD and Intel devices to follow. Improved Windows Search The improved Windows Search enables users to find images, documents or settings by describing them in natural language, without needing to recall exact file names. Powered by a local neural processing unit (NPU), it delivers faster, more intuitive results by understanding context, reducing search time by up to 70 per cent compared to traditional Windows 10 search methods. How to get these features These exclusive features for Copilot Plus PCs are included in the April 2025 Windows non-security preview update. Microsoft will begin rolling them out over the next month. The company stated: 'We will be gradually rolling out these new features via controlled feature rollout (CFR) to consumers.'

Microsoft makes delayed AI Recall feature available

Microsoft's Recall feature is finally ready for broad use across its AI-enabled PC line after months of delays and significant security changes, the company announced Friday. Why it matters: First shown last May, Recall — which promises to help users find anything they ever saw anywhere on their computer by taking frequent snapshots of the screen — was intended to be the signature feature of the first generation of Copilot+ PCs that hit stores last year. Driving the news: Microsoft said Friday that Recall is now available as part of a free, downloadable update for all Copilot+ PCs, whether they use processors from Intel, AMD or Qualcomm. In addition to Recall, the update includes AI-powered improvements to Windows Search and a feature called "click to do" that allows people to summarize or refine text with a single click, among other actions. Catch up quick: Recall, which works by feeding its screenshots of everything a user sees into AI models, was quickly criticized by security experts who warned the approach presented safety and privacy risks — even though the AI is designed to only run locally on the user's computer. Microsoft made a number of tweaks, including requiring biometric authentication and encrypting the data. Recall is now opt-in, and users can choose which apps use the feature and which do not. The changes took time, though, and the resulting delay forced Microsoft to spend last year focusing on the performance and battery life of Copilot+ PCs instead of their AI wizardry. The big picture: Microsoft and Apple have been promoting the AI features of their latest devices, but both companies have struggled to deliver on their visions. For many users, the most significant AI feature remains "using ChatGPT" or some other cloud-based AI service. What they're saying: Microsoft acknowledges the delay may have cost it some momentum, but the company also says its work improving Recall will help fuel other AI features.

The EU is cracking down on ads in Windows 11's Start menu

To align with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), Microsoft is updating Windows 11's Start Menu Search, but only for users in the European Economic Area, as Tech Radar reports. The software giant is introducing more transparent labels to distinguish between web search results and local ones. This move is part of broader changes that let users uninstall Edge and turn off Bing integration, reinforcing transparency and user choice. The changes are in a new Windows 11 Insider Preview Build, build 27764. Notably, X user @alex290292 shared a screenshot that shows the new Start menu user interface with the 'Windows' and 'Web search from Bing' sections. These changes are great news since they give users more control over Windows 11. Specifically, the modifications include adding custom web search providers to Windows Search, letting users remove the Edge browser, and turning off Bing web search. What is the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA)? It's a set of rules that prevent big tech giants from leveraging their dominance to stifle competition. With this set of rules, Microsoft has to play nice and not force users to use their services only. Other great changes are coming, including right-clicking on a pinned app and seeing a new 'jump list.' When you right-click on the Start menu or taskbar, this change gives you quick access to recent folders, files, or tasks associated with an app. However, Microsoft has not released any official information that mentions these changes are coming to more countries, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Moreover, beyond these search improvements, Microsoft is also testing an improved Windows Search on Copilot+.
