Donor brings Show Us Your Brave tally to $500,000 as cancer diagnoses rate is up in Windsor

The Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation's second annual Show Us Your Brave campaign raised over $500,000 for local cancer care. Seen on July 22, 2025. (Rob Hindi/AM800 News) John Viacelli took the Show Us Your Brave campaign to another level on Tuesday as he topped off the campaign, bringing the total raised to $500,000. 'This is just another example of people stepping up,' said Houida Kassem, executive director of the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation, after Viacelli topped off the campaign from $376,000. 'That's the only thing I want; to help people,' Viacelli said. The money raised from the campaign all stays local. 'We make sure that we are supporting the program and ensuring that they're getting state-of-the-art equipment or supporting the programs that currently exist and ones that will likely unfold,' Kassem said. According to Jonathan Foster, vice president of cancer services at Windsor Regional Hospital, the need has never been greater. He said during the 2024-25 fiscal year, there were 5,000 consults for new cancer diagnoses at the Cancer Centre, with another 116,000 visits across all service streams. 'That's about a 10 per cent increase year over year that we've seen steadily. Windsor-Essex has one of the highest growth projections for new cancers in all of Ontario,' Foster said. Kassem added that cancer doesn't stop just because the economy changes. 'Cancer doesn't stop because of uncertainty. We have to show our brave. We have to step up. We have to continue to do it,' she said. Foster said the increase is in all ages with lung, prostate, breast, and colorectal being the most common cancers seen. 'That's why things like the stem cell program that we're doing as well as the new radiation bunker, are so important for us to be able to treat these cancers as they come through,' Foster noted. Fundraising money through the Cancer Centre Foundation has helped support the stem cell program and radiation bunker, which have, in turn, improved cancer survivorship. 'The best message is to make sure that you're getting your routine checkups with your primary health care provider, your MP, or your GP doing the routine screening that gets put out there because the earlier you get diagnosed, the better your survivorship chances are,' said Foster.

Cancer survivors, doctors and supporters set to rappel downtown Windsor high rise

(Source: Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation) Cancer survivors, doctors and supporters are getting ready to rappel a downtown Windsor high rise for a good cause. The 'Show Us Your Brave' fundraiser returns Saturday starting at 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Participants will rappel 170-feet down to the sidewalk of 100 Ouellette Ave, commonly referred to as the CIBC building. Organizers are very close to their $75,000 goal and are hoping supporters will venture downtown to cheer participants on and donate at the same time. Joining in the excitement this year are some of the regions top doctors and healthcare leaders including Dr. Sindu Kanjeekal, Chief of Oncology, Windsor Regional Cancer Program, Karen Riddel, interim CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital, Kristen Kennedy, President and CEO at Erie Shores Healthcare and leading oncologist Dr. Caroline Hamm. Carson Woodall, Windsor Spitfires Alum and Meg Roberts from AM800's 'Mornings with Mike and Meg' have also raised pledges to rappel and support the cause. Organizers however note each person rappelling has a very unique – and sometimes emotional reason – to rappel, including the three Brave Ambassadors. Show Us Your Brave – Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation The Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation serves as the official fundraising arm for the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre, fulfilling requests of the Windsor Regional Cancer Program. Thanks to tremendous community support, the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation has raised over $30 million to date.

Windsor Police Service holds fundraising BBQ to support Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation

Windsor Police Service (WPS) headquarters in downtown Windsor was the site for a BBQ - all for a great cause. Officers, cadets and staff came out to grill hot dogs during the lunch hour Tuesday afternoon to raise funds to support the Windsor cancer centre foundation and their 'Show Us Your Brave' campaign. One hundred percent of money raised stays local and has helped to purchase vital equipment, fund cancer research, treatment and patient initiatives that aren't otherwise funded by the province of Ontario. Monetary donations have further helped more patients receive treatment locally, reducing the need to travel and the associated cost. 061725 - Windsor Windsor Police hold BBQ to fundraise for Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation. WPS Chief Jason Bellaire welcomed the ongoing partnership with the foundation and the generosity of the community at-large. 'You know, we're always happy to get an email or a phone call to have our members participate in the fundraising - we're happy to be included,' said Chief Bellaire. 'If there's one thing I say about being a member of the Windsor Police Service at an executive level, it's to the degree to which the community groups have included their police service, in participating in good causes - and that really does mean a lot to us.' Community support through events like this one haves raised over $30 million dollars to date for the foundation. Learn more about the campaign here, and donate here.
