Jackson resident frustrated with apartment flooding

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A resident at a Jackson apartment complex said she's having to deal with the aftermath of excessive flooding in her unit. Cynthia Winford has lived at Waverly Park Apartments for three years. She's had to temporarily live with other family members due to the unfit living conditions in her own unit. Winford said ongoing plumbing issues in her two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment have caused flooding. 'Both bathrooms, flood out or whatever. You can't really, we can't really get in the shower or use the toilet or whatever. The water comes from up on the bottom of the toilets and floods out the bedroom, and it's been going on for like like going on two months now,' Winford said. When contractors are called to address the matter, Winford said they perform temporary patch work that only lasts for a few weeks. After the water is drained from the apartment, she's left with the damage and foul odors. Ocean Springs mother seeks justice for son's death during Facebook Marketplace transaction 'They have moved everything up here, and they will come suck the water out of the carpet, last time no new carpet was put down. I don't think that's right either, no new carpet was put down, and all of our stuff is just up front. But still, we really can't, how are we supposed to stay here?' Winford questioned. She said a drain in the parking lot fills with water when it rains, which also finds its way inside of her apartment due to a large opening in the hallway floor. Winford said she's had to rush her four-month-old grandchild to the hospital after getting sick. 'The fact that the apartment manager or no one tried to accommodate me and my kids, put us in another unit, I've tried to be transferred to another unit. They wouldn't place us in another unit. I don't think that was right. Me having to go through the application process all over again, this is not my fault, so I don't think that was right. Like I said, I've never been the type of person that wanted to go live on my people, because they have lives themselves, so I shouldn't have to do that,' she said. WJTV 12 News reached out to the apartment's manager, and they declined to talk on camera. However, they said they're aware of the issues in the unit and are working to get the matter resolved. WJTV 12 News also reached out to the property owner, but no one answered when contacted. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Ex-UConn basketball player, 28, charged with murdering mother

A former college basketball player has been arrested in Florida and charged with the murder of his 51-year-old mother, who was found wrapped in a blanket in the backyard of a Jacksonville home, police said Tuesday. Eric Christopher Cobb, 28, was arrested and booked into the Duval County Jail and is facing one count of murder in the second degree after police say he was caught attempting to flee a home where his mother appeared to have been fatally shot. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it responded to a "disturbing scene" in the Mid-Westside area on Monday where they discovered Erika Winford "unresponsive, wrapped in a blanket and towels in the backyard" of the residence. Law enforcement said Winford appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Cobb was arrested shortly after while attempting to flee the home, the sheriff's office said. According to the CT Post, neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots and a woman screaming on the previous night. The following day, a friend of the victim came to the home to check on her after not being able to get in contact with her. When she arrived at the home, she found large areas of blood outside the home and what appeared to be a body wrapped in a blanket. "Your JSO will work closely with the State Attorney's Office to seek justice for Ms. Winford's family in the wake of this tragic crime," law enforcement said in a news release. Cobb played basketball at the University of Connecticut from 2017-2019. In his junior year, he had five starts in 15 games, averaging 1.7 points and 2.7 rebounds. The following year, he appeared in 32 games, averaging 3.7 points and 3.8 rebounds. He previously played one season at South Carolina where he appeared in 24 games and averaged 1.1 points and 1.9 rebounds. According to online records, Cobb remains in custody awaiting trial. Former College Basketball Star Charged With Mother's Brutal Murder

A former college basketball star has been arrested and charged with his mother's murder, the CT Post reported. Former University of Connecticut and University of South Carolina forward Eric Christopher Cobb, 28, has been charged with murder after the body of his mother, 51-year-old Erika Ellen Winford, was found in the backyard of their Jacksonville, FL, home wrapped in towels and blankets. Authorities were summoned to the home on Monday morning by a friend of Winford's who conducted a welfare check after Winford didn't answer her phone. The caller reported seeing a pool of blood on the patio steps and what appeared to be a body wrapped in sheets. During the investigation, a neighbor told officers that they heard a woman screaming, 'He's going to kill me!' around 8 p.m. the night before. Another person claimed they heard what sounded like gunshots around the same time. Police on the scene who examined the body found the victim had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, stomach, and left leg. Cobb was home at the time officers arrived, and he was taken in for questioning without incident. Inside the house, authorities found more blood and evidence that part of the hallway had been cleaned. They also recovered two guns, an AR-style rifle and a 9mm handgun, and corresponding live ammunition in an area of the living room which appeared to be Cobb's makeshift bedroom. In a trash can outside, they found 14 spent 9mm shell unnamed male friend who phoned 911 claimed that he had spent most of Sunday with her and had plans with her on Monday. When he drove her home Sunday evening, he told officers, she seemed reluctant to go into the house. He returned the following morning after receiving no response to his phone calls. The man and another friend of Winford's allegedly told police that the woman was afraid of her 'possessed' son who needed medication for mental health difficulties but was unable to afford it. Winford's other son told police that he had lived with Cobb and his mother at the residence until just over a month ago, when Cobb 'cursed out' Winford. Cobb was arrested in 2023 for resisting arrest, at which time Winford defended him in a letter to the court (via First Coast News). At the time, she expressed "concern about his mental health breakdown,' writing, 'I strongly believe that he experienced a mental breakdown due to the challenges he faces in his current situation. His unwavering dedication to basketball, coupled with the abrupt disruption caused by the pandemic, has seemingly taken a toll on his mental well-being." That case remains open. At South Carolina, Cobb held a per-game average of 1.1 points and 1.9 rebounds during the 2015–'16 season, before he was let go after being charged with assault for firing a gun at an occupied vehicle. After transferring to UConn for the 2017–'19 season, he averaged 3.0 points and 3.4 rebounds across 47 games.
