Countdown to Kickoff: Ryan Wingo

Ryan Wingo steps into the WR1 role in Austin this season with Matthew Golden moving on. After a strong freshman season, can he continue to develop into a true star for the Longhorns? We are four weeks out from Longhorn football getting underway and today we are going to talk about the presumed WR1, Ryan Wingo. Wingo was a top receiver prospect in the 2024 class and Texas was able to win the commitment late in the process over Missouri. He burst onto the scene immediately in 2024, with a number of explosive plays in his freshman year, that set the bar for an explosive sophomore season. 2024 Stats: 29 catches, 472 yards(16.3 yards/catch), 2 TDs The freshman WR group around the country last year was special. Jeremiah Smith led the way at Ohio State, but Ryan Williams(Alabama), Bryant Wesco(Clemson) and more stole the show as well. That left Wingo underdiscussed compared to his peers a year ago, largely because of the options around him. Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond and Gunnar Helm took the lion's share of the targets a year ago, but when Wingo got the ball in his hands, the ability was immediately clear. He walks into the 2025 season without Golden or Bond in the room and as the second most experienced WR on the team, behind DeAndre Moore Jr. He is widely expected to be the go-to guy for Arch Manning early and often this year. The two scores Wingo had a year ago came in games Arch Manning was under center, against UTSA and ULM. The rapport between the two is very clear in a short period of time. This question that many people around the sport have about Texas this year is the replacement of those pass catchers. Ryan Wingo could make a lot of that a non-issue if he elevates his game to the level of Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams in 2025. The talent level is beyond question, with remarkable speed with the ball in his hands, great 50/50 ball ability and plus route running. Expecting a big year out of sophomore WR Ryan Wingo in rising crossers and deep shots were a strength a year ago and certainly fit the strengths of Arch Manning at QB. Wingo is one of the most important players for the Longhorns in 2025. The pass game will need a true WR1 throughout the season to reach its potential. I believe, along with a number of others, that Ryan Wingo can become that and more. The mix of the opportunity with many guys moving on, Arch Manning and his confidence together and his unique ability will give way for a huge year for Wingo. Texas has major questions when it comes to the pass catchers on this team, with tons of new names taking over big roles. Ryan Wingo will be the one among that group that is expected to be the gamechanger. It seems Sarkisian and co. have all the confidence in the world he can do that, with only one portal addition at the WR position. Which brings us to tomorrow's subject for Countdown to Kickoff: the Stanford transfer Emmett Mosley V. We will be back tomorrow to talk about what the former Cardinal can bring to the Texas offense. Star Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna running back Cooper commits to Texas over UM, others

Explosive Hollywood Chaminade Madonna running back Derrek Cooper, considered one of South Florida's top prospects in the 2026 recruiting class, announced Sunday that he will attend Texas, delivering a blow to the Hurricanes. Cooper, rated by 247 Sports as the sixth-best prospect in Florida, had dozens of offers but narrowed his list to finalists to Georgia, FSU, Ohio State, UM and Texas. He said he opted for Texas in part because they've sent five running backs to the NFL in the past three years. 'The one visit [there] stood out a lot,' he said. He also plays linebacker but is expected to play running back in college. Cooper is the second elite South Florida skill position player to bypass UM in recent days; Miami Northwestern wide receiver Calvin Russell - rated the No. 3 player in Florida, the No. 3 receiver overall and the No. 22 prospect in the country - announced a week ago that he will attend Syracuse instead of UM, Michigan, FSU and Oregon. Cooper, who also runs track, transferred from Cardinal Gibbons to Chaminade after the 2023 season. He participated in the Under Armour All-America Game earlier this year and had four carries for 12 yards and one reception for 31 yards. Last season, he helped Chaminade-Madonna win the state 1A championship, rushing 124 times for 905 yards (9.3 per carry) and 13 TDs while also catching nine passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. As a linebacker last year, he had 46 tackles (10 for loss), four sacks, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He also blocked two punts, and MaxPreps named him to the All-American second team among juniors. 247 Sports rates him the No. 3 athlete (non-position designated prospect) in the country and the nation's 40th best prospect overall. 247 Sports recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins said the 6-1, 205-pound Cooper is 'a jack-of-all-trades that some schools view as a running back while others think the ceiling might be higher as a back-seven defender. Owns a favorable athletic profile for a mid-skill with bright green speed and explosion scores. As a ball carrier, runs with plenty of tempo and energy as he hits the hole with urgency.' In better news for UM, the Canes on Thursday picked up a commitment from St. Augustine-based Class of 2026 wide receiver Somourian Wingo, who is rated by 247 Sports the No. 24 receiver and the No. 160 player overall. Wingo -- who also considered the Gators, among others -- caught 65 passes for 1,040 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. He also plays basketball averaged 16.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.1 steals last season. Wingo is the third receiver in UM's 2026 class, joining four-star prospect Vance Spafford and three-star prospect Tyran Evans. UM has one running back committed for 2026 -- West Boca Raton running back Javian Mallory, who said he remains committed to the Canes after visiting FSU and Louisville and meeting with Alabama over the past month. Mallory played in seven games last season and ran for 676 yards (10.1 per carry) and 10 touchdowns. UM previously pursued Georgia-based running back Jae Lamar, the nation's No. 11 back, but he committed to the Georgia Bulldogs. 247 Sports ranks UM's class ninth nationally.

Here are the Triangle's largest "unicorn" startups

When Durham-based sports software company Teamworks revealed last month it had gained a valuation of more than $1 billion, it became the Triangle's first tech startup to join the " unicorn" club — startups surpassing a $1 billion valuation — in more than three years. Why it matters: While the early pandemic years saw an influx of cash go to startups due to low interest rates, raising money has grown significantly more difficult over the past two years. But there are signs that such investments could be picking back up, Scot Wingo, a local investor, told Axios. What they're saying: "It's whipsawing around," Wingo said of investments into startups, noting investment companies seem less concerned now about tariffs. "There is a lot of private equity deals going on, and there have been a couple high-profile IPOs that have gone well," he added. "It definitely feels like directionally we are going in the right way." Between the lines: It's been years since the Triangle had a startup go public on a stock exchange, and startups valued at more than $1 billion represent some of the region's best chances of hitting that mark. An IPO could potentially provide financial windfalls for some local employees and investors that could flow back through the local economy. Wingo said many people are watching to see how well Figma's potential IPO fares, as an encouragement for local startups like Pendo or SAS. Zoom in: There are more than 1,200 startups around the world valued at $1 billion or more, according to CB Insights. Five of them are located in the Triangle, according to data from CB Insights, Pitchbook and Crunchbase. Here are the startups in the Triangle that have fetched "unicorn" valuations: 🕹️ Epic Games: The Cary-based video game maker has a valuation of $22 billion, according to CB Insights, after raising $1.5 billion from Disney last year. The company is the 13th most valuable startup in the world, according to CB Insights, and is so large that Axios' Dan Primack suggested referring to startups of its size as "dragons" rather than unicorns. Locally, the company has a large presence in Cary, with more than 3,000 employees. However, it has withdrawn plans to build a new headquarters on the former site of Cary Towne Center. 🖥️ Pendo: The Raleigh software startup has a valuation of $2.6 billion, according to Pitchbook, and has long held ambitions of going public. The company has conducted layoffs in recent years, but remains one of the largest tech firms in Raleigh and became profitable for the first time last year. 🏈 Teamworks: Founded by a former Duke football player, Durham-based Teamworks runs a software platform that helps sports teams manage their players' schedules, nutrition and even their online brand — a feature that has become popular in the era of NIL. The company now has a valuation of $1.2 billion, according to Pitchbook, and its customers include every NFL team, most Division I college athletic departments and 90% of MLB teams. 🔐 JupiterOne: Morrisville-based JupiterOne, a maker of cybersecurity tools, has a valuation of $1 billion, according to Pitchbook. The company's founder, N.C. State grad Erkang Zheng, stepped down as CEO last year. But he is now raising money for a new AI startup, though details on the company have not yet been revealed.

Defender Zane Monlouis the latest to join Toronto FC's growing injury list

TORONTO – The hurt continues for Toronto FC, with defender Zane Monlouis the latest player to be sidelined. The former England youth international, who left the Arsenal under-23 side to sign with TFC in February, fell awkwardly while trying to make a tackle in Wednesday's 1-1 draw with the visiting New York Red Bulls. He fell to the ground, clutching his groin area, and had to be helped off the field. 'It's going to be a long-term injury again,' Toronto coach Robin Fraser said after training Friday. 'Something in the hip, groin area. And these sort of things, they seem to take quite a while. 'With regards to injuries, if we didn't have bad luck, we'd have no luck, it seems like.' Toronto (3-10-5) was missing eight players mid-week, six injured and two on international duty, prompting Fraser to deploy the 21-year-old Monlouis, primarily a centre back, at right back. The injured were defenders Kobe Franklin, Nicksoen Gomis and Henry Wingo, midfielders Jonathan Osorio and Markus Cimermancic, and winger Federico Bernardeschi. Fullback/wingback Richie Laryea and midfielder Deybi Flores are with Canada and Honduras, respectively, at the Gold Cup. Gomis is gone for the season after surgery to repair his Achilles tendon, while Wingo was seen on crutches this week. 'It'll be a couple of months, I think,' Fraser said when asked about Wingo's possible return. Bernardeschi, meanwhile, is suffering from a 'lingering' lower-body injury. Fraser did not seem hopeful that any of the walking wounded might be back for Saturday's visit by the Portland Timbers. 'It does feel like a MASH unit at times. We've had incredibly bad luck,' he said. 'Injuries are part of the game and it happens. But when you get this number of injuries — and different types and different severities and different durations — it does feel odd. Because there are years when you basically have very few if any (injuries). And those years feel completely normal. You forget about what this feels like when you're having one of those years.' It seems like a while since TFC has had one of those good years. Toronto is winless in its last four games (0-3-1) and winless in five at home (0-4-1). On the plus side, forward Deandre Kerr saw 14 minutes of action mid-week in Toronto's first game in 25 days. It was his first involvement since suffering a high ankle sprain March 29. Osorio, who suffered a lower-body injury training with Canada, was seen running with a trainer in the portion of training open to media on Friday. It seemed to speak volumes that despite all the absences Wednesday, Italian designated player Lorenzo Insigne was glued to the bench. Fraser said later he wanted to give some of his younger players their opportunity — hardly a vote of confidence in a player who is earning US$15.4 million this season. Portland (8-4-6) arrives in fourth place in the Western Conference. The Timbers had to settle for a 1-1 draw with visiting San Jose on Wednesday after conceding a 94th-minute equalizer. Portland had won two straight before that. 'Collectively, they have a very aggressive mindset when they go forward. They're a difficult team to deal with because of that,' said Fraser. 'Their athleticism is the sort of thing that bodes really well for this league but they have athletic players who are also talented, skilful.' Portland manager Phil Neville was quick to praise Toronto. 'I think they're a dangerous team,' he said. 'You watch their last five or six games, they've been in every single game. They're at the point of the season where they're going to have to go for it. They need points.' Portland's Jonathan Rodríguez, Ariel Lassiter and Brazil's Anthony are dealing with injuries. The Timbers also have players at the Gold Cup with goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau and defender Kamal Miller both with Canada. It is just the 12th league meeting between the two teams, with Toronto holding a 5-4-2 edge. They last met in 2022 when Toronto won 3-1 at home. TFC goes into weekend play in 14th place in the Eastern Conference, 11 points and five places below the last playoff position. And after Portland, only five of their remaining 15 games are at home, not that playing at BMO Field has been much of an advantage with only five out of a possible 33 points collected there in 11 outings (1-7-3) this season. Fraser insists his players see the severity of the situation. 'It's something we talk about consistently. It comes down to does it resonate? And I certainly think it is starting to.' 'Now we have to talk about results, as opposed to just improving or just doing the things that we need to do,' he added. 'We need to talk about results. That's where we are right now … Time is running out and we can't afford to waste opportunities.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Despite the lack of success on the field, Fraser believes in his roster, calling his players honest and hard-working. 'To dig ourselves out of where we are, it's going to take so much work,' he said. 'It's going to take so much teamwork. But again, I believe in the character of the group.' Toronto has not made the playoffs since 2020, when it stumbled at the first hurdle, beaten by expansion Nashville SC. — This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 27, 2025
