Haines City teacher caught smoking meth in Winter Haven park, police say

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — A Haines City High School teacher was arrested after police said they caught him smoking meth after hours in a Winter Haven park. The Winter Haven Police Department said officers were patrolling parks around 10 p.m. Tuesday when they found a red Toyota Prius parked at Lyons Park. Officers said 54-year-old Shane Christopher Olson, a world history teacher at Haines City High School, was found inside the car. Hillsborough assistant state attorney arrested on child porn charges: HCSO Olson told officers he didn't know he was not supposed to be in the park after hours. He said he pulled over to the park to use his phone because 'he didn't want to text and drive.' Officers said Olson also told them that he was smoking something that had been given to him by some friends. Police said they observed the pipe Olson was smoking from and tested its contents. They said the test was positive for the presence of methamphetamine. A white, crystal-like substance and another container inside a black bag with two other pipes were found inside Olson's car, according to Winter Haven police. Invesitgators said all the pipes and containers tested positive for meth. Olson was taken into custody and booked into the Polk County Jail for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia – smoking device. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. The Brief A Winter Haven man was arrested for lewd battery after befriending a teen at a bus stop. Police say Loy Don Stewart, II, 20, gave the teen e-cigarettes and promised her alcohol and cash. Stewart was arrested and charged with three counts of lewd battery, three counts of traveling to meet a minor and one count of use of an electronic device to solicit a minor. WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - A Winter Haven man is behind bars after police say he committed lewd battery on a teen he met at a bus stop. The backstory According to the Winter Haven Police Department, on May 8, 9, and 14, 2025, 20-year-old Loy Don Stewart, II, pulled up to the bus stop located at Edwin St NE and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and called to the victim saying, "come here little mama". Police say the two eventually exchanged Instagram accounts and talked for a short period until his account was closed by Instagram. On three occasions, police say Stewart took the victim from her bus stop and dropped her off at school. The victim told police Stewart had lewd interactions with her in his truck on the three occasions. Dig deeper Police say Stewart gave the victim e-cigarettes and promised her alcohol and cash for the May 14 encounter. He was supposed to give her the items on May 19, 2025, according to WHPD. But, the victim told a parent what was happening and she was not at the bus stop on the 19. After interviewing the victim, detectives confirmed that Stewart lived at the Edwin Street residence where they located the truck he was driving that matched the description the victim gave. On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, detectives spoke with Stewart and confirmed that he drove the pickup truck to the bus stop and talked with the victim. Detectives say he also admitted he drove the victim to her school and acknowledged the lewd acts inside of the truck. Stewart claimed the victim told him she was 17 or 18 years old, but he couldn't remember. Stewart was arrested and charged with three counts of lewd battery, three counts of traveling to meet a minor and one count of use of electronic device to solicit a minor. What they're saying "I implore parents to be hyper-vigilant about the school bus stops," said Police Chief Vance Monroe. "It's always a good idea to partner with other parents and try to have a presence to ensure the safety of the kids." Winter Haven police said they detained the woman, and immediately calmed the child down, saying the officer's gun was never pointed at the child. WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Winter Haven Police Department is addressing an incident that happened Tuesday afternoon involving a small child while officers worked to detain two people. The backstory Officials said Winter Haven police officers were dispatched to Santiago's, which is located at 898 Havendale Boulevard, for a disturbance involving a gun. The police department said the 29-year-old seen with the gun got into an altercation with a store employee in the parking lot, but the 29-year-old man ultimately left the property heading south on Hwy 17. READ: Florida man accused of taking out 'man bits' in back of Lyft ride from Walmart to mobile home park: PCSO A "be on the lookout" (BOLO) was issued after the disturbance for a red Nissan Altima with the 29-year-old as the driver and a woman and small child as the passengers. Officers said they found the vehicle at the American Legion, located at 300 Avenue M NW in Winter Haven. Dig deeper The 29-year-old man and the woman and child had gotten out of the vehicle, and the man was found inside the building where he was quickly apprehended by officers. The 27-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was also directed to get on the ground, and she immediately complied with their orders. However, her young child mimicked her actions, which sparked outrage on social media from community members. Follow FOX 13 on YouTube The 27-year-old woman was quickly detained by officers, and WHPD said they immediately calmed and cared for the young child. A diamondback 9mm semiautomatic pistol was found inside the vehicle by officers. What they're saying In a press release sent out Wednesday afternoon, WHPD officials stood behind the officers' actions, saying that they "responded with an appropriate level of caution with the understanding there was a weapon involved seeking to resolve the situation." Authorities said the officer approaching the 27-year-old woman immediately pointed his gun toward the ground when he saw the child. WHPD said the officer's gun was never pointed at the child. MORE: 33 arrested as Hillsborough deputies dismantle drug-trafficking ring run with smuggled prison cell phone: HCSO The department notified the Department of Children and Families of the incident, because "it was a violent crime committed in the presence of a child." However, both the man and woman were released by police, along with they child, because the store employee didn't press charges. The 29-year-old man, 27-year-old woman and the store employee were not identified by FOX 13, because they were not charged with any crime related to the incident. What's next Officials said that a complaint affidavit was filed with the State Attorney's Office for the 29-year-old man for affray, which means fighting in a public setting, and improper display of a weapon. A complaint affidavit was also filed for the store employee for affray. Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe, Assistant City Manager for Public Safety Charlie Bird and City Manager T.
