Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou to saddle up Cheeky Smirk at Hawkesbury on Tuesday
The colours worn by a horse famous for 'almost' beating Winx will be on show at Hawkesbury on Tuesday when Cheeky Smirk aims for back-to-back wins to open his career. A Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou -trained son of All Too Hard, Cheeky Smirk was bred by Laing Racing whose white and tartan silks were previously worn by one of Ryan's most notable stalwarts. 'They've been in a few horses but Cheeky Smirk was the first winner to race in their colours since Red Excitement,'' Ryan explained. A $32,500 yearling who won $1.2 million, Red Excitement is best remembered for almost running the great Winx off her feet in the 2017 Chelmsford Stakes. 'He got a long way in front that day and people said he went too hard but when you looked at the sectionals, he never did, the others in the field backed off him,'' Ryan recalled. That was brilliant! Winx comes with a barnstorming finish to record her 19th successive win in the G2 Chelmsford Stakes! #GoWinx — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) September 2, 2017 • As for Cheeky Smirk, he came from near last at the turn, weaving his way through the pack, to win by the best part of two-lengths when he made his debut in a Hawkesbury 1100m Maiden on July 20. 'We thought he would go there and run well,'' Ryan said. 'We expected him to run top three and he got a bit further back than I thought he would be but he finished off terrific.' Ryan and co-trainer Sterling Alexiou saddle-up the well-bred Cosmic Eagle in the Blakes Marine Maiden Handicap (1100m) at what will be the daughter of Deep Field's third start. 'She was good first-up in a 900m race, finished off well, and probably was on the worst part of the track at Muswellbrook but ran well,'' Ryan said. 'She took a little while to get over it, that's why she hasn't raced for a while, but she seems bright and well and good in herself.' Meanwhile, there will be no Hillier for the Ryan/Alexiou camp's Harry's Evidence to contend with this time when the last start Newcastle runner-up contests the opener on the seven-event card. 'Hillier went to Melbourne and franked the form when it ran second down there,' Ryan said. 'I think Hillier is not a bad horse. He ran in all the good races and was well-found. 'Harry's Evidence raced a bit erratically so we have taken the winkers off him and put a crossover noseband on him and it seems to be helping him heaps.'

Top US jockey Katie Davis, who rose to fame in Netflix documentary, to seek Frankie Dettori advice before Shergar Cup
TORI TIPS Top US jockey Katie Davis, who rose to fame in Netflix documentary, to seek Frankie Dettori advice before Shergar Cup KATIE DAVIS is going to call on the king of Ascot for advice ahead of Saturday's Shergar Cup. Top jock Davis, 33, will pick Frankie Dettori's brain before riding for the Rest of the World at the team event, alongside Winx's jockey Hugh Bowman and Hong Kong's Karis Teetan. 2 Katie Davis attended a Shergar Cup media event at Ascot on Thursday 2 She will seek advice from Frankie Dettori before riding at Ascot Credit: Getty Based in New York, she is one of the most successful female jockeys riding in America, while her profile received a major boost when she featured on the Netflix documentary Race For The Crown. She has ridden abroad before, including in Saudi Arabia, but never in Britain so she will get help from the man who dominated Ascot during his legendary career in the UK. She said: 'Frankie said at least three times to me 'when the entries come out Katie, you better call me, don't you forget!'. 'We were both breezing horses with Wesley Ward at the time, so we'll FaceTime before racing and he will help me analyse my rides and talk me through the track. Trust me, I'm here to win. 'He is the king of this place - he even has statues here. I did a Frankie dismount after riding a winner at Saratoga before, though I don't think I'll try it on Saturday.' Davis' family is engrained in American horse racing. Her dad, Robbie, was a hugely successful jockey, while her brother, Dylan, and husband, Trevor McCarthy, are also top riders. She has made a big impact of her own over the last few years and has bagged several stakes wins in New York, and now she can't wait to ride in the Shergar Cup for the first time. Davis, who hopes to find some time to do some sight-seeing in London with her hubby, said: "My whole family is in racing. My dad was a jockey in the 80s and 90s and retired in 2003. "He kept us very far from the sport and when he came he never talked about it, but as we got older when he started training we all got into it. "I've won five or six stakes races this year and placed a lot in Graded stakes, but I'm looking for my first big one. It's my goal this year and hopefully I'll get there. 'Words can't explain how much I am looking forward to the Shergar Cup. The track looks incredible, I will take it all in and enjoy it as much as I can." Each jockey is allotted five rides on the six race card, and Davis' best chance will come on Andrew Balding's Kensington Palace Stakes winner Miss Information in the Shergar Cup Mile. Davis said: 'I know Andrew Balding is one of the top trainers here. Miss Information won at Royal Ascot so I can't wait to get on a horse with a really good chance." Frankie Dettori to show star US jockey how to win the Shergar Cup at Ascot
The Italian superstar has offered to help advise Katie Davis as she makes her British debut on the Rest Of The World team at Saturday's event Frankie Dettori is to show one of the stars of Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup how to win at Ascot. The Italian superstar quit Britain at the end of 2023 to relocate to the US where he is now established among the leading jockeys. While in Britain he rode in 12 editions of the Shergar Cup, a unique event contested by teams of jockeys from home and abroad. There have been few better riders of the track than Dettori who rode 81 winners at Royal Ascot where he was leading rider seven times. In 1996 he famously went through the card, riding the winners of all seven races in what was dubbed 'Frankie's Magnificent Seven'. So even though he is riding on the card at Saratoga in New York state on Saturday, he has offered to give US Katie Davis some tips on how to master the course. Davis, 33, is from a family of jockeys. Her father, sister and brother are all former or currently successful riders. She is a multiple stakes winner in the US where she has ridden more than 340 winners but will be making her British debut at Ascot on Saturday when her six mounts will include Miss Information, winner of the Kensington Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, in June. 'We were both riding work for Wesley Ward when Frankie caught me off guard.' said Davis, who featured in the hit Netflix documentary 'Race For The Crown. 'He said, 'Don't you forget me. You gotta call me when the entries come out'. So we're going to Facetime. Trust me, I'm here to win.' Davis is part of the Rest Of The World team with the Hong Kong-based duo Karis Teetan and Hugh Bowman, the Australian best known for partnering the great Winx to 25 Group 1 victories. She added: 'Words can't explain how much I am looking forward to it. I work well under pressure. It's more of an excitement for me. I will definitely enjoy every bit of it.'

Wet weather could dampen Private Eye's Missile return
SYDNEY Top trainer Joseph Pride has until the morning of Aug 8 to decide if early Missile Stakes favourite Private Eye will take his place in the first Group race of the Sydney season or step out in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm. The class runner in the 10-horse field of the A$300,000 (S$250,000) Group 2 race (1,200m) on Aug 9, Private Eye has been backed from 5-2 into 8-5 since markets opened, but Pride is wary of sending him around on a testing track so early this prep. With the Randwick surface already rated a heavy 9 and rain forecast to return on Aug 7, Pride said he may be forced to take the Al Maher eight-year-old to the trials despite seeing the Missile Stakes as a perfect seasonal kick-off. "I feel like he's in for a good preparation and while I think he looks a good thing in that race, I'm not sure I want to kick him off on a really heavy track," said Pride, who finished fifth on the Sydney trainers' premiership last season and opened his 2025-26 account with Headley Grange last Saturday. "I've got options. He can go in the (Group 1) Winx (Stakes) or next week, he can go down and run in the (Group 2) PB Lawrence (Stakes) at Caulfield. "There's a good chance he'll be at the Friday trials instead but I'll decide on Friday morning." Pride said his biggest reservation was rain on race day as the tracks tended to deteriorate quickly. However, given his plans for the multiple-Group winner, Pride does not have the luxury of waiting to see what unfolds as the afternoon progresses on Saturday. "Wet tracks to run on are so different when the rain is three or four days before a race as opposed to rain on race days," he said. "Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to wait and say, 'oh, I'm going to pull him out now'. He has to go to the trials on Friday if he doesn't race." The Missile Stakes is the first "black type" race of the 2025-26 Sydney season with the opening major, the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1,400m) to be run at Randwick in a fortnight on Aug 23. If Private Eye does go around this weekend, Pride expects him to stamp his class, especially given he will carry equal topweight of 57.5kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions. "Could any other horse in that race do what he's done in his life?" he said. "He's clearly the best horse in the race and he's not even penalised for it because it's set weights and penalties and he hasn't won a Group 1 race in the last 12 months or so." In 43 starts over seven seasons, half of the veteran's 12 wins came at Group level with the 2021 Group 1 Epsom (1,600m) the pinnacle. The last of his wins came in the Group 3 Festival Stakes (1,500m) at Rosehill Gardens on Nov 30, when ridden by gun Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller, his partner at his last two feature race wins. The Missile line-up includes recent Listed Winter Challenge (1,500m) winner Robusto and Group 2 Theo Marks (1,300m) winner Encap, among others. SKY WORLD RACING
