Limerick producer, singer and songwriter Rory Hall aka Proper Micro NV has released his latest single, I Want To Cry But I Can't, under his new project, i n n e r l i z z a r d s. We asked him the BIG questions . . . Speaking about his new venture, he says, "I've been working as Proper Micro NV for 10 years now (which shocks me to even say). I love working on the project and I will absolutely continue to do so. "Over the last year or two however, I've had a burning desire to start a new project. I want to create, and i n n e r l i z z a r d s will hopefully be the mega-massive release of thoughts and feelings that I think I've always needed. "My plan is to take this one step at a time. I don't want to get lost in a machine. I just want to release, wait and hopefully see. Throw another plate on!" Tell us three things about yourself . . . I'm an Irish singer and producer who works under both i n n e r l i z z a r d s and Proper Micro NV. I've played festivals and venues all around Ireland and the UK - Electric Picnic, Latitude, Body and Soul and the Dublin Castle etc. I love my dogs! How would you describe your music? I suppose electronic has always been a baseline for me and then it's just a case of what I start building around that. At the moment, it's quite lo-fi and a little bit R&B. I suppose it's emotional music this time around. Who are your musical inspirations? A bit of everything really. My main inspirations in terms of live music would be artists like Basement Jaxx, Gorillaz and Grace Jones. People who put on big live shows and do it so well. I've been listening to a lot of The Cure and Baxter Drury lately. I love anything that taps in to my emotion as well as my performative side. What was the first gig you ever went to? Grace Jones at Electric Picnic in 2015. She blew my mind and kind of changed everything. What a phenomenal performer. I distinctly remember the crowd waiting and waiting in anticipation, the curtains finally opened on stage and she was standing on this huge platform wearing something amazing. The definition of a star. I remember leaving the stage thinking to myself – did that just happen? What was the first record you ever bought? As far as I can remember it was a Gorillaz record (Demon Days). My Dad used to play it on tape in his van when it first came out. I remember it being the first record that fully took me in. What's your favourite song right now? At the moment it's Genius of Love by Tom Tom Club. I was in New York earlier this year and heard it playing out loud in a restaurant. It's been stuck in my head since. Favourite lyric of all time? "I wish I didn't miss you anymore" - Wish I Didn't Miss You by Angie Stone. It's such a beautiful song and lyric and the way she sang it was just so striking. What a great voice she had. If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? Raindrops by Basement Jaxx. I love their music and the way the records are always so busy. It's a really unique production style that you don't really find often. Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone, a member of all-female hip-hop trio The Sequence and known for the hit song Wish I Didn't Miss You, started singing as a child in South Carolina, in church choirs. The Sequence, formed by the then Angela Brown and childhood friends Gwendolyn Chisolm and Cheryl Cook, were the first all-female hip-hop group to release an album, through the groundbreaking Sugar Hill Records. The group released three records, to moderate commercial success, before disbanding. Stone emerged as a solo artist in the early 2000s, enjoying considerable success propelled by Wish I Didn't Miss You, which was a dance floor hit. At around the same time, Stone branched out into acting, appearing in a mix of drama and reality TV shows and also racking up a dozen feature film credits. However, music remained Stone's main claim to fame and singles No More Rain (In This Cloud) and Baby both topped the Billboard R&B chart, and her 2001 album Mahogany Soul and 2007 album The Art Of Love & War both made the Billboard top 30. Angie Stone was killed in a crash on an Alabama highway when travelling to a concert. She died on March 1 aged 63. — APL/agencies

Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone's memorial service announced
A memorial service was held Friday at Word of Faith Cathedral in Austell, Georgia, to honor Grammy-nominated R&B singer Angie Stone, who passed away at 63 following a tragic car accident. Stone was killed on March 1 when the cargo van she was traveling in flipped over and was struck by a truck south of Montgomery, Alabama. The other passengers survived the crash. Fans, family, and fellow artists gathered at the Atlanta-area church to pay tribute to Stone, whose gold casket was surrounded by red roses. The service, led by senior pastor Bishop Dale Bronner, opened with a message of faith and remembrance. Stone was the only person killed in the crash. She was 63 years old. Stone was a member of the all-female hip-hop trio The Sequence and was known for the hit song "Wish I Didn't Miss You." She helped form The Sequence, the first all-female group on the hip-hop trailblazing imprint Sugar Hill Records, becoming one of the first female groups to record a rap song. The group recorded "Funk You Up," which has been sampled by numerous artists, including Dr. Dre. After finding success in the early 1980s, Stone later joined the trio Vertical Hold before launching her solo career. Stone created hits like "No More Rain (In This Cloud)," which reached No. 1 for 10 weeks on Billboard's Adult R&B airplay chart; "Baby" with legendary soul singer Betty Wright, another No. 1 hit; and "Wish I Didn't Miss You" and "Brotha." She found a sweet spot in the early 2000s as neo-soul began to dominate the R&B landscape with the emergence of singers like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Maxwell and D'Angelo. Friends and fans of Angie Stone will gather on Friday for a public memorial service for the Grammy-nominated R&B singer. Stone died in a car crash in Alabama on March 1. Stone's longtime manager said the cargo van she was riding in flipped over and was hit by a truck on Interstate 65. Everyone else in the van survived the crash. Friday's service is set for 11 a.m. at Word of Faith Cathedral in Austell, Georgia. A private service will be held Saturday at First Nazareth Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Stone performed in Mobile, Alabama the night before the crash and was heading back to Atlanta. Stone's dear friend and former Channel 2 anchor and reporter JaQuitta Williams said Stone survived the initial incident. 'She was talking to somebody alongside her telling them to help her get out of the van,' Williams said. Alabama law enforcement said that's when an 18-wheeler hit the van and the van hit Stone, killing her. 'It's just been hard to process,' Williams said. Williams said Stone's son and daughter are understandably having a tough time. 'They want her fans to know to keep her legacy alive. Keep loving on her. Keep playing her music,' Williams said.
