Wits students heard overseas on musical scholarship
JOHANNESBURG - Wits School of Arts celebrates the international departure of 3 of its students. Two are headed to the New York Voices and one for Vienna. The University has the opportunity to exchange students for academic talent. It also shares indigenous knowledge, using the power of education to be attractive for youth, and sustainable global commitment for our communities. To talk more about the 'SWEET ICONIC' band, Wits lecture, Chantal Willie-Petersen, and masters student Mathapelo Matabane, recipient of the Erasmus/European Scholarship visited eNCA studios.

Africa Day celebrations around Johannesburg
Let's celebrate our glorious continent this Africa Day on 25 May! The city of Johannesburg will host various events to commemorate Africa Day, which is often celebrated with arts and culture activities all over the African continent. Celebrate Africa Day at the Wits School of Arts. The university is hosting a concert and workshop at its Wits Chris Seabrooke Music Hall. The celebration will include a recital and workshop by a renowned African musician and Professor of African Music, Dizu Mzikantu Plaatjies. Professor Plaatjies is also the founder of the South African group, AmaMpondo. The event is free to the public and it takes place from 11:00. Prepare for fun, laughter and great music this Africa Day. The Windybrow Arts Centre, a division of The Market Theatre Foundation, brings its sixth iteration of its annual parade, Hey Hillbrow! Let's Dlala! Hundreds of Gauteng residents will parade through the streets of Hillbrow. The fun event allows the inner city communities a chance to experience amazing performances right on their streets. It is an initiative that fosters a sense of community as the locals celebrate with music, colourful visuals and a few surprises along the way. Artists such as the Thamsanqa Vuthela Band, Mozambique's The Dizzy Brains, and Styles Da Deejay of The Creators Room will perform at the parade. The event starts at 10am from The Windybrow Arts Centre. The 11th Edition of Africa Day Celebration at Freedom Park The National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is hosting their own Africa Day celebration once again. The event will take place at Freedom Park under the theme, 'Building the Africa We Want through Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability'. The event will feature music and entertainment. It starts at 8am.

Prof Greg Jasperse hosts jazz master classes at Wits School of Arts
Prof Greg Jasperse Image: Supplied Jazz lovers are in for a treat! Leading vocalist and educator Prof Greg Jasperse is in residency at the Wits School of Arts, where he will host a series of master classes, workshops and concerts. The residency is presented by the Wits Music Department and Fulbright. Jasperse, who is director of Vocal Jazz at Western Michigan University (WMU), is an expert in jazz voice, improvisation and arrangement. He also directs Gold Company, WMU's award-winning vocal jazz ensemble. A member of Vertical Voices, he has toured with New York Voices as a substitute. Recent appearances include with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival and the Gran Canaria Big Band. He has performed with Rosemary Clooney, Dianne Reeves, Jennifer Holiday, Bobby McFerrin, among voice can be heard on movie soundtracks such as 'Jurassic Park', 'Epic', 'Oz, The Great and Powerful', 'Star Trek' and 'Star Trek 2'. A graduate of the University of Miami and WMU, Jasperse's music is performed around the world by many leading vocal ensembles such as Chantileer, The Philippine Madrigal Singers, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, Chicago Children's Choir, and the St. Olaf week he will provide training aimed at professionals in the jazz field every day till Friday, May 16, 2025 in the Music Room on the 8th floor at the Wits Art Museum. A concert open to the public will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at 7.30pm featuring a line-up that will include Jasperse and local artists in the Christopher Seabrooke Hall at the Wits Music Department. According to Chantal Willie-Petersen, the Wits music lecturer who curated the programme, the residency is aimed at the training of students and the development of professionals. Through in-person sessions, it is aimed at promoting collaboration, fostering growth and building networks in the jazz community as well as the broader music sector.
