Barca's Ter Stegen faces three months out after back surgery

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to undergo back surgery on a long-term problem and will miss three months as a result, the Germany international said on Thursday. The Spanish champions signed Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia this summer, who is expected to become the team's first choice, with Wojciech Szczesny as back-up. "Today is a personally difficult day for me. Physically and athletically, I feel in very good shape, although unfortunately I am not free from pain," said Ter Stegen on social media network Instagram. "After intensive discussions with the FC Barcelona medical team and external experts, the quickest and safest way for me to fully recover is through back surgery. "After my last operation on my back, I returned to the pitch after 66 days-almost two months... this time, the doctors believe about three months will be necessary as a precaution, to avoid any risks." Spanish media reported Barcelona were hoping to sell Ter Stegen, 33, who signed for the club in 2014, to help register new signings Garcia and Marcus Rashford. Last summer a long-term injury to defender Andreas Christensen allowed Barcelona to use a La Liga loophole to register playmaker Dani Olmo on a temporary basis after he signed from RB Leipzig. "Emotionally, it hurts a lot not being able to support the team during this time. Fortunately, the rehabilitation is manageable and the road back is clear," continued Ter Stegen. "Don't worry -- I'll be back." rbs/gj

Barcelona star considering surgery that could have major transfer impact

Barcelona star Marc-Andre ter Stegen is considering a second surgery in the space of a year, amid intense speculation over his future. The Blaugrana captain has been told that he will be third-choice this season behind Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczesny if he remains at the club, but so far has vowed to fight for his spot. The 33-year-old spent much of last season out injured after undergoing knee surgery, with Wojciech Szczesny signed out of retirement to replace him. As he returned from injury in May, ter Stegen played a handful of games, but missed out on playing in crucial clashes against Real Madrid and Inter. Ter Stegen considering surgery As per Jijantes, ter Stegen is considering going under the knife for a second time in the space of a year, and the fourth time in the last four years. He has an ongoing back problem that has kept him out of training for the past five days, and limited to work in the gym. Image via Getty Images Registration and recovery for ter Stegen If he does undergo surgery, ter Stegen would be ruled out for several months of action. Barcelona could use the long-term injury rule to register other players in his absence, including Joan Garcia. Jijantes note that it could be enough money to include Garcia in their squad, and complete another operation. Consequences for ter Stegen and Barcelona It would potentially save Barcelona a headache in terms of registration in the short-term, but it could more or less rule out a departure this summer, and any hope of saving money on his salary. Similarly, for ter Stegen it would further hurt his chances of remaining Germany's number one for the World Cup next summer. This past season Barcelona used the rule to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, but were then faced with a registration issue in January, which they only resolved through a court order.

Barca's Szczesny contract renewal leaving Ter Stegen's future in doubt

Wojciech Szczesny helped Barcelona win the La Liga and Copa del Rey titles last season. (EPA Images pic) BARCELONA : Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has renewed his contract until 2027, the La Liga champions said on Monday. 'The Polish goalkeeper staying is recognition and a prize for his great season between the sticks for Barca, after an unexpected arrival in a strange context,' wrote the Catalan club in a statement. Szczesny had retired from football when Barcelona signed him in October to replace injured stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who was ruled out for most of the season with a ruptured patella tendon. The 35-year-old impressed as Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey, with Ter Stegen only returning to the squad in the final weeks of the season. Szczesny's decision to stay and Barca signing goalkeeper Joan Garcia from Espanyol earlier in the summer cast doubt over Ter Stegen's future at the club. The German international, 33, commands a high salary at Barcelona and Spanish media report the financially struggling club would like to make savings in that regard. Barca signed Garcia from Espanyol for 26.34 million euros ($31 million) on a six-year deal in June and also still has another goalkeeper in Inaki Pena on the books.

FC Barcelona Beats Premier League To Surprise New Summer Signing

FC Barcelona has made a surprise new incoming summer signing as reported by Mundo Deportivo, which ... More cited anonymous sources. FC Barcelona has made a surprise new incoming summer signing as reported by Mundo Deportivo and Fabrizio Romano, who cited anonymous sources. Coming off a domestic treble-winning season, the Catalans have been busy in the market preparing for 2025/2026 under head coach Hansi Flick and trying to go one better than the Champions League semifinal loss to Inter Milan. Wojciech Szczesny was impressive when coaxed out of retirement to take over from the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but shipping seven goals across the two legs of the latter-mentioned fixture pushed President Joan Laporta and Sporting Director Deco to take action. While Szczesny has been already signed a one-year extension which was announced on Monday, Barca activated Joan Garcia's $29.3 million (€25 million) release clause at Espanyol which will probably push Ter Stegen out of his club since 2014. Further up the pitch, Barca was left with egg on its face when Nico Williams appeared to have agreed terms with it but then penned a ten-year contract extension at Athletic Club. This means that he chase for a left winger will now probably be a two-horse race between Liverpool FC's Luis Diaz and Manchester United Marcus Rashford. On the other flank, reports from Fabrizio Romano and SPORT say that Barca has landed Swedish teenage sensation Roony Bardghji with the Copenhagen wideman having already passed his medical to provide back up and positional rivalry to fellow Moroccan descent star Lamine Yamal. Barca is seemingly not done there in making reinforcements and has sealed Croat midfielder Lovro Chelfi from NK Kustosija according to Romano. Mundo Deportivo explains that Chelfi is "considered one of the emerging jewels of Croation football" and had "also aroused the interest of several Premier League clubs" prior to deciding that he will continue his development in Catalonia. Once on Dinamo Zagreb's books like Dani Olmo, Chelfi is expected to join the reserve team known as Barca Atletic though he might get a chance to go on the first team's preaseon tour of Asia and possibly stay in the senior squad if he manages to impress Flick. Making the step to FC Barcelona's first team won't be easy for the youngster With competition from the likes of Olmo, Gavi, Pedri and Fermin Lopez to name a few, getting midfield minutes in the FC Barcelona first team won't be easy for Chelfi. This has already led to the departure of Noah Darvich, with Pablo Torre also reported to be on his way to Mallorca soon.

Barcelona star set for summer exit after new signing incoming

Barcelona's goalkeeper shuffle is gaining pace, and it looks like Inaki Pena could be the first to pack his gloves. With the arrival of Joan Garcia and Wojciech Szczęsny staying put, Pena has slipped to fourth in the pecking order. That's not a bench — it's practically the stands. Advertisement The 26-year-old, a product of La Masia and once seen as a long-term option between the sticks, is now preparing for life away from Camp Nou. While his contract runs until next summer, all signs point to an early goodbye. Barca have brought in García as their new long-term No. 1. Szczęsny is set to be his backup, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen — whose future hangs in limbo — remains stuck in transfer talks. That leaves Pena in an awkward spot, with little hope of game time and even less clarity about when he could be of any use this season. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Pena, determined not to spend the season on the bench (or worse, in training bibs), is already assessing his options. And unlike one of his goal kicks, he's aiming far — possibly outside Spain. Why Inaki Pena wants Barcelona exit this summer? The reason is simple: he wants to play. Pena isn't chasing money or fame; he's after minutes. And with Barcelona's goalkeeping slots jammed tighter than a penalty shootout, he knows it's time to go. Advertisement According to Marca, Pena has 'accepted his fate' and is actively looking for a move before July 13, when Barca kick off their pre-season. A transfer abroad seems most likely, though Valencia and Real Betis have also expressed interest. If no deal is struck soon, he might even leave with a contract termination — a clean break to start afresh. That would also help Barcelona clear up salary cap space and finalize other moves, including Ter Stegen's situation. Pena is keen to join a new club in time for pre-season, where he can finally be a starter — not a shadow. Barcelona news and related links
