My career was stuck in a rut - could a psychic save it?

Sitting in a chic studio in southwest London, it feels like I'm waiting for a styling consultation rather than a spiritual awakening. Everything is neutral-toned and beautifully curated. There's herbal tea on offer, while tastefully arranged crystals and books are scattered across the coffee table – and there isn't a whiff of incense. Nothing about this scenario screams 'fortune teller' – it rather murmurs 'interior design meeting in Notting Hill'. Yet, here I am, sitting in front of a psychic who's about to give me some much-needed career guidance. She had popped up on my Instagram, with reviews claiming that I would be left with a sense of 'clarity and empowerment'. Intrigued, I booked a session at £80 for half an hour. It felt timely – I'd been feeling lost in my journalism career for months and I figured that at worst, it'd be an interesting story. At best? Some kind of epiphany. Letting a stranger loose on your career ladder may sound slightly mad, but I'm not the only one turning to more unorthodox guidance: psychics have become increasingly popular as decision-making tools among millennials and Gen Z, with celebrities like Emma Roberts and Kesha reportedly fans. Social media is full of #tarottok and spiritual readings offering to decode your love life, career and wellbeing. One video I saw featured a woman explaining that she sought a divorce because a psychic told her to. She looked radiant. I felt mildly alarmed. I'm all for introspection, but I'm not sure I want to be handing major life decisions to someone who also sells moon water on Etsy, so when I sit down in front of my psychic Nikki in her fancy London studio, I feel curious and a little amused. When I was initially greeted, I felt almost nervous. But we soon bond over our shared love for scrolling endlessly on Wolf & Badger, and I quickly feel at ease. Nikki had a definitively calming presence – so much so that I barely notice when our conversation shifts from my personal preference of water (still or sparkling) to spiritual breath work. Not long into my session, she suddenly tells me: 'Your grandmother's here. On your mother's side.' I catch my breath – my grandmother, Nancy, died a few months earlier aged 95. Her decline had been rapid and, in the chaos of life continuing around me, I hadn't processed it properly. I hadn't really spoken about it, certainly not in the online booking form. Despite this surprise mention of my grandmother – it isn't the moment that stayed with me most during my 30 minute session. It is something that comes later, more casually: 'You're a writer,' Nikki says, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. At this point, I hadn't mentioned my job or what I did. All I'd given was my first name and a vague note about wanting to find my purpose. I'd been told about cold reading – the technique where psychics use cues from your appearance, body language or vague statements to guess personal information – and I'm not usually inclined to believe in clairvoyant revelations. But something about Nikki's statement feels accurate in a way I hadn't been able to admit to myself recently. Growing up, I always wanted to be a writer. After years of feeling certain I was on the right path and countless conversations with mentors within the industry, I had started to question whether I was in the right field at all. I felt like I was constantly pushing uphill, often feeling underpaid and unsure if my stories were even making a difference. Nikki tells me I've been clinging to stability – which is true – and that it is time to think about what I want, not just what makes sense on paper. She warns that things will get a bit worse before they improve, but that 2025 will bring a total shift. She also says that she can see I'm 'independent' – however, I must admit, the idea of walking away from a full-time, salaried job feels wildly unrealistic. As we finish up and say our goodbyes, I leave wondering just how accurate the session was. Six months later, I jack in my safe 9-5 journalism job to go freelance. Looking back, I'm not saying Nikki saw the future – she could have made a lucky guess. Maybe she just reflected back the things I already suspected but hadn't admitted. But I left that session with a level of focus I hadn't had in a long time and I'm not sure that was a coincidence. It's not hard to see why more people are turning to these kinds of practices, especially in their twenties and thirties. The period of life that's meant to be fun and freeing is often chaotic, uncertain and, at times, quietly miserable. You're building a career, navigating relationships, trying to work out who you are – all while attempting to afford a flat with windows. Therapy costs a fortune or comes with months-long waitlists and religion doesn't speak to everyone. So it makes sense that more of us are turning to tarot, psychics, astrology – anything that promises even a flicker of clarity. Of course, no psychic reading should replace practical career planning and most experts would argue that while moments of reflection can be helpful, they shouldn't take the place of 'real-world' advice or long-term thinking. A tarot card won't negotiate your salary, and a birth chart won't update your LinkedIn profile. That said, there were moments in my session that gave me pause. They weren't dramatic, but oddly specific. At one point, Nikki asked, 'Who's Ellie?' I didn't know what to say – I don't have an Ellie in my life. She asked about a childhood elephant toy. Not mine, but my sister's. It was a huge part of our childhood. A few hours later, on my way home, I passed a small, scruffy elephant cuddly toy on the pavement near my flat. I laughed out loud – not because I was convinced the spirits were guiding me, but because sometimes life feels strangely well timed. More Trending That evening, I opened a blank Word document. Not for a pitch or a commission. Just to write. I can't remember the last time I'd done that. I ended up writing a piece about being a so-called 'Frazzled Englishwoman' and from there my Substack was born. To this day, it is the main reminder of why I love to write. When I told friends and family I'd seen a psychic, the reactions were mixed. Some raised an eyebrow, others admitted they'd done the same, or quietly asked for her contact details. One friend who'd rolled their eyes texted me a week later to say they'd booked a session 'just in case'. While I'm not planning on letting Nikki decide my taxes or romantic future, I do believe that as a tool for reflection – a way of holding up a mirror – it's worth a shot. I don't think I'll ever be the kind of person who plans their life around Mercury retrograde – but I will admit, thanks to a psychic, my career direction has never felt clearer. Emma Louise Connolly's beachy necklace is from brand loved by Kate Middleton

One of the easiest ways to give your outfit a holiday-ready beachy upgrade is with some shell-inspired jewellery, and Emma Louise Connolly has found the perfect one to shop With summer holidays approaching and plenty of seasonal events to choose from, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with trying to shop for a new outfit for every occasion. That's why jewellery is the perfect way to give an old dress a new look, especially when that jewellery is fun, whimsical and perfectly on trend for the summer. This season it's all about nautical seashell-inspired pieces, and model Emma Louise Connolly has found the perfect one to add to her accessory collection. Hailing from Missoma – a brand loved by none other than Kate Middleton – her Spiral Gemstone Beaded Pendant Necklace is a great balance of fun and chic, and it's an easy way to style up even the most basic outfit. Priced at £135, the necklace features a string of lab grown clear crystal quartz beads with an 18ct recycled gold-plated shell-shaped pendant. Each crystal bead is also totally unique with varying sizes and shapes just as you'd get with sourced quartz, giving you a realistic look whilst still being ultra sustainable. To make it stand out, the beads are linked together with a thick red thread which adds a little pop of colour to the necklace. For even more of a statement look, the Shell Crystal Necklace Sienna from Wolf & Badger is £160 and features bold red beads with an oversized spiral shell pendant in gold. We also spotted this Beaded Pendant Necklace for £68 at Anthologie, which has a more classic look thanks to its pearl beads. You can also choose from green or yellow beads, with each colourway featuring a different shaped summer-inspired pendant including a seashell, a starfish and sun. Those on a tight budget can also get a similar look at ASOS with its orange and gold Short Necklace With Coloured Stones And Shell Pendant which is a mere £10. Meanwhile Not on the High Street offers this stunning Rose Quartz Gemstone Gingham Necklace With Heart And Fruit Charms which ticks off two accessory trends – fruit and shells – in one for £36. However Missoma's jewellery comes with a very royal seal of approval, with Princess Kate, owning several pairs of earrings from the brand. One of her most recognisable pairs is the Zenyu Fan Chandelier Hoop Earrings, £145, which she first wore during her 2019 tour of Pakistan. She was spotted re-wearing them again in 2021 at the Royal Variety Performance, proving just how versatile they are. However if you want to nail this summer's trends, Emma Lou's Spiral Gemstone Beaded Pendant Necklace is a must-buy. Copy Kate Middleton's jewellery for less with pearl earrings like her go-to pair

Kate Middleton frequently wears her late mother-in-law, Diana's, Collingwood pearl drop earrings for formal events, and we've found a pair that look just like them for under £50 Known for her amazing and covetable accessories, Kate's jewellery may seem out of reach for the average shopper. Though many of the pieces she wears are designer or passed down from generations, it doesn't mean you can't copy her look with similar items, without breaking the bank. One pair of earrings the Princess of Wales wears regularly to formal occasions is her Collingwood pearl drop earrings that used to belong to Princess Diana. Now it appears they have been passed on to Kate, who has worn them to various events in the years since she married Prince William. And we've found a pair that looks just like hers. Though not identical to the real thing, these Cellacity Classic 925 Drop Earrings emulate Diana and Kate's earrings in their raindrop silhouette and elegant simplicity. Featuring similar gems to those in Kate's earrings, to create a sparkle that catches the light with every movement, these earrings feature the same solitary pearl drop motif as the Collingwood set in Kate's jewellery collection. The Collingwood pair that Kate reaches for time and time again boasts an antique aesthetic that is both timeless and endlessly elegant, with a touch of antique opulence that elevates any look on any occasion. These Cellacity earrings mirror the Collingwood set with an equally classic design that is both ageless and still contemporary for modern-day wear. Before marrying Prince Charles in 1981, Diana was gifted the incredible pair of pearl earrings from Collingwood Jewellers (jewellers of the Spencer family) as a wedding present. The earrings appear to have become firm favourites with her as she wore them many times, including on royal tours of Australia, Canada, and Italy. This pair retails for £42.99 on Amazon, making it affordable to copy one of Kate's signature looks without a royal budget or your own personal jeweller. For alternative designs spanning various budgets, check out the other sets we've found that match Kate's earrings, too. Over at Wolf & Badger, you can find these Emberlynn Earrings for £161, or head to Fraser Hart to shop these 9ct White Gold Oval Freshwater Pearl and Cubic Zirconia Round and Pear Top Drop Earrings for £325. For a pair that resembles Kate's iconic Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings, Ernest Jones has these 9ct White Gold Diamond & Pearl Drop Earrings for £195, down from £325.
