Evan Funke's New Hollywood Lounge Goes Big on Roman Street Food

A new Roman-inspired cocktail lounge from acclaimed chef Evan Funke and Giancarlo Pagani, the managing partner of Mother Wolf Group, is headed to Hollywood. Bar Avoja opens in the short-lived former Mars cocktail bar space, tucked behind Mother Wolf, on May 30. Mars first opened in January 2024 with a $5,000 a year membership that came with a personal spirits locker, priority seating, and invitations to special events; the bar closed in April 2025. At Bar Avoja, Funke will prepare a menu inspired by handheld Roman street food, alongside folded and thin-crust pizza and cocktails. A frittatina di carbonara, a pasta stuffed fritter, is filled with spaghetti swirled with guanciale, black pepper, and egg, or eggplant, mozzarella di bufala, and ricotta salata. A fried arancini, a popular street food in the Eternal City, draws inspiration from cacio e pepe, with crema di pecorino romano and black pepper. At Bar Avoja, Funke will also prepare wood-fired pies. The Portafoglio folded to resemble a pocket, is topped with oxtail meatballs, braised greens, and fonduta di pecorino; the Wolfgang with smoked salmon, herb cream, and trout roe; and the Palermo with sugo di cipolla (onion sauce), caciocavallo, wild oregano, and sauteed bread crumbs. Funke's signature Palermo-inspired focaccia, sfincione all'aglione, will also be on the menu. Gelato and cannoli with ricotta and Santa Barbara pistachios will be available for dessert. Cocktails are made to pair with Funke's cooking, like the Morso Di Vita with Grey Goose, Chinola passion fruit, tomato, basil, and lemon, as well as the Santa Infuocata, mixing Malfy gin, Meyer lemon honey, and Olio Santo olive oil. Alongside cocktails, Bar Avoja will also serve wine and mocktails. Bar Avoja retains elements of the luxe Mars interior, like the intimate red leather seating and an accent wall with wire cages displaying bottles of liquor. Small glass tabletop lamps cast a gentle line downward onto dark wood tables, with strips of metal dividing the top into quarters. It's a venue that's easy to settle into for a few hours, catching up with friends over a bottle of wine and bites from Funke. The bar will be open Thursday to Saturday, by reservation only. For fans of Funke's cooking at Mother Wolf and his eponymous restaurant, Funke, the arrival of Bar Avoja offers an enticing new upscale cocktail option in the neighborhood that's guaranteed to have some top-notch food. Bar Avoja will open at 1545 Wilcox Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90028 on May 30 with hours on Thursday to Saturday, from 6 p.m. until late. Reservations are required and available on Resy . Valerie Bertinelli 'Couldn't Be Prouder' of Son and His New Star-Studded Music Video

Valerie Bertinelli continues to support her son Wolfgang Van Halen and his work with his band, Mammoth VH. Last week, she shared a photo on her @wolfiesmomInstagram account from the set of the band's new video for the song 'The End,' in which she makes a cameo along with a few other celebs, including Danny Trejo, who is pictured with the pair. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 'What an amazing experience. The video for The End @mammothwvh is out now. The song is streaming everywhere I couldn't be prouder,' she wrote in the caption. Along with Bertinelli and Trejo, the video also includes cameos by rockers Myles Kennedy and Slash, Wolfgang's wife Andraia Van Halen and others, and was directed by Robert Rodriquez (known for From Dusk to Dawn, El Mariachi, Machete and more) and makeup artist Greg Nicotero. The clip has subtle throwbacks to Michael Jackson's iconic 'Thriller' video, Wolfgang's late father Eddie Van Halen, as well as some of Rodriguez's films. It begins with a quote from Jackson before Trejo's character warns Mammoth VH not to play too loud because his customers at the club are 'sensitive to loud noises.' The band fails to heed that advice and the audience soon turns into a variety of werewolves, vampires and zombies as Wolfgang and company rip through the tune. Fans left praise for the clip in the comments on YouTube. 'walking towards the camera on the table, just like dad. Epic,' wrote one, while another added, 'Danny Trejo and Slash in a Mammoth video?!?! HELL YEAH!' 'Valerie throwing punches while Slash just chills was perfect,' another added, while yet another wrote, 'The Force runs strong in the Van Halen family.'

Rocker Pays ‘Awesome' Tribute to His Late Legendary Father by Playing His Iconic Guitar

Wolfgang Van Halen continues to pay tribute to guitar legend Eddie Van Halen by occasionally playing his father's guitar. On Monday, May 5, Wolfgang shared a video on X, formerly Twitter, of him playing his father's famed guitar known as Frankenstein, because the elder Van Halen customized the instrument by adding parts from various guitars. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 In the 20-second clip, Wolfgang is seen playing along to a recorded track as he sits cross-legged. Fans will recognize the red guitar with the customized white and black stripes that became an Eddie Van Halen trademark. 'Fun fact, I recorded the main tapping of the song, and the slap part with the Frankenstein! Makes me feel closer to Pop that such an important part of his history can live with mine every time I record ❤️,' Wolfgang, who is the son of Valerie Bertinelli, captioned the clip. Fans were quick to comment on the clip. 'What an awesome nod to "Mean Streets" but in his own way. I wonder why no other guitarists have incorporated this technique. Maybe it was too hard, or maybe it sounded too much like EVH. Either way, this is awesome,' wrote one. Wolf replied to that comment by writing, 'Hah it's actually not, it's just a slap bass part on a guitar, but thank you!' 'So rad! How awesome to see that not only you are getting to make that connection, but we as fans get to continue to make a connection to EVH through you. The new song is just awesome! Great job Wolfie!' wrote another fan.
